Today we are going to explore the east side of the big island and head to hilo and I am going to show you what to do in hilo hawaii.
    Hilo Hawaii Travel Guide
Rainbow falls- 80 ft waterfall located in Hilo. There is no fee to visit . make sure you get here early as both parking becomes a problem as well as it does it packed here. When it comes to hilo waterfalls this is one of the most visited and beautiful.
Peepee falls- just up the road from rainbow falls is peepee falls. the view of the falls is from public access viewing area. But most people come here to enjoy boiling pots which are small cascades of pools downstream from the falls that you can swim in . Parking is easy here and there is plenty of it.
Akaka Falls - This is one of the largest Big island waterfalls at over 400 ft. There are two waterfalls at this state park. Getting here is easy and there is plenty of parking just remember there is a fee of $5 dollars per car and its just a short hike to both waterfalls.
Top Things to do on the Big Island
hawaii valcanoes national park- Every Hawaii travel guide mentions volcanoes national park because it a special place. If you are coming to the big island you have to spend at least a few hours here just to take in the sites. make sure to check ahead of time to see what is open.
some of the main attractions are crater rim drive, halemaumau crater , puu oo vent, and the lava tubes when open. If you are coming to the big island and want to see lava there are a few ways to achieve this. Buy boat watching the lava spill in the ocean is absolutely amazing , a helicopter ride while expensive is also amazing, or you can drive down to kalapana and rent bikes and bike to the lava yourself. always do your research to make sure that it is still permitted before going. Seeing Big Island Lava is once in a lifetime experience.
Hilo Hawaii Things to Do- Beaches
Green Sand Beach (papakolea)- This is one of two green sand beaches in the united states . getting here is a mission its about a 2.8 mile hike to get to the beach. This is one of the most unique beaches on the island.
Black Sand Beach (punalu'u) - This is one of my favorite beaches on the island. We usually stop at punalu'u back shop and pick up some food and treats and come here hang up the hammock and chill and enjoy a meal by the ocean. This is also a place that you will see turtles basking in the sun . remember that they are protected animal and keep your distance. the snorkeling here on a good day is not bad as well.
Richardson Beach Park / Carlsmith beach park -
These are two great beaches to visit in Hilo. Both beaches are great snorkeling , you can surf at richardson beach park as well as snorkel. They are both great family friendly beaches.
Southern Most Point ( Ka Lae)
This is my favorite place on the island. The road here has gotten alot better over the years. great place for fishing and cliff jumping but make sure you stay for sunset. The sunsets here are beautiful some of the best on the island. Big Island Southern most point is a must visit.
    Hilo Farmers Market
this is a must if visiting the big island. Best days to come are on Wed and Sat from 6am - 4pm. They have everything here from food , desert , fresh fruits and vegetables to jewelry and gifts. This is the place to stock up on papayas and avocados and other fruits the prices are cheap and the people are super friendly. If you see any vendors selling the vanilla bean fruit make sure to purchase some tastes like vanilla ice cream.
Best places to eat in hilo hawaii
2 ladies kitchen - This place is amazing fresh made to order mochi. Every flavor is delicious you cant go wrong with this place.
Suisan Fish Market- The best poke in Hilo by far maybe best poke on the big island. the fish is always fresh you can see them bringing fish in all the time. another must east place on the big island. when it comes to big island poke my favorite are poke shack and suisan fish market
Pineapples- This is a great place for dinner. they have live music the prices are not to expensive and the food is service is always good.
Kens house of pancakes - If you are looking for good breakfast place or good place to get breakfast for dinner this is the spot. always busy but the food is good.
    Kaumana caves
This is for the adventure seekers. Free cave system to explore in hilo just make sure you bring your flashlight or head lamp some water and good shoes.

The more you travel, the more you see that there are so many wonderful things in the world. It can be difficult to settle for something great when you can see that there could always be something better just round the next corner. Travel can sometimes simply be about a quest for perfection.
This quest for perfection that we are looking for,we found just now in your video so the only that we have to say on you:
Huge thank you and keep going!!!!!!

Thank you for the recommendation for Punalu’u. The black sand beach did not disappoint! We didn’t know it was on the Big Island until watching your video. We put it in our itinerary at the last minute- and we thought it was cooler than Kilauea erupting 🌋 Mahalo!

Headed back to the big island for a month. It’s laid back and beautiful. There are local deals locals know about. Like I rented a car for $1200 for the month instead of $2600 every two weeks.

I am coming off a cruise and we dock in Hilo from 8:00AM till 6PM (4PM since we need to be back 2 hours before the ship gets back to sea). What would you say is worth checking out for that period of time? Is it worth renting a car?

    • @PackYourBags
      @PackYourBags  Рік тому +1

what day are you landing. it might be worth it to rent a car. then you wont have to be waiting for uber to take you everywhere depending on price.
what i recommend would be hilo farmers market for sure. wed and sat are there big days but open 7 days a week
      Rainbow falls
      Pe'epe'e Falls
      Walk Around Hilo
Then I would head towards black sand beach (Punaluu Beach)
      Places to Eat
      Suisan Fish Market
      Two Ladies Kitchen
      Punalu'U Bake Shop (Malasadas)
      Hope that helps.

    • @PackYourBags
      @PackYourBags  3 роки тому +2

@@JP-dz7zu so currently lava is confined to the crater so you can only see the glow at night you can’t hike to the lava or bike 🚴 to it .. the only way to get a real view would be expensive helicopter tour at the moment hope that answers your question

Im concerned how your a travel guide for the island if most of your locations are NOT in Hilo.. Akaka Falls is about 35 minutes North of Hilo.. Volcano National Park is 1.5 hours drive south of Hilo. Green Sand Beach is 3 hours south of Hilo at the southern part of the island and you MUST have a narly off road or beater off road to get there (seriously doubt rental services would allow their vehicles to go). Punaluu bakery is also 1.5 hours south of Hilo.

Karl R is Friggin crazy! Akaka falls is 15 minutes from Hilo. Hawaii Volcanoes National Park is between 30 to 45 minutes away from Hilo at mile marker 28(from Hilo which is mile marker zero). Green Sands is an hour and a half to the end of the paved road. How you choose to get to the actual beach is up to you. The only one you got close to being accurate on is the bakery. Either that or you must be one of the irritating Subaru drivers who feel the need to drive 10mph under the posted limit.

I hate these sensationalized thumbnails like Hawaii is just beaches and rainbows. Downtown Hilo is GHETTO. I mean not like dangerous during day on main path, but, just trashy and run down. And WET ALWAYS. Don’t try to move here just to be in Hawaii. It’s cheaper for a reason. I’d say just as many homeless as Oahu per capita. Each street has homeless. They mostly keep and talk to themselves.
