  • We sat down with Amber Haley, Realtor to discuss what is it like to live in East Hawaii on the Big Island of Hawaii. This area of Hawaii is the most affordable place to live in the entire state, but there are pros and cons, including risky lava zones, remoteness, and a life that you would not find on the mainland of the US. Amber, who lives there, and Julie Ziemelis, who lives on the other side of the island in Kona, discuss the differences and Amber shares invaluable info to those considering a move to East Hawaii.

Ocean 🌊 View must be the largest subdivision in the USA with 11,000 lots and 200 miles of paved roads .

you lady's are off base here and there. Kona and Hilo areas are very different but I found both sides to be
very attractive. Both of my kid's were born in Hilo, went to school while I helped run 3 Radio stations there. The people on both sides are great overall. Hilo is older and has a much larger population, three hospitals, all next to each other, a fine much older down town, fine schools and good eats. I lived in Hilo for 18 years and 50 years total on the Big Island including The west side. I now reside in Ocean View and my grown up kiddos are on the west side. The real estate markets on both sides are out of sight and very hard to find affordable housing for everybody. We find it very hard to make ends meet and so many have left the Island, it's expensive no matter what you tell me and wages are not up to real property. There, I have said my piece now I'll get flack for sure but show me where I'm wrong.

Thanks for your insights. Everyone has a different perspective on life on this island based on where you live and for how long. One thing is true around the island-its expensive and you need a plan to survive here. We are doing a video on Hilo and East Hawaii soon.

Thanks for the insight. Spend a lot of time on many of Islands there. I find the Big Island the most attractive. The people, the life style. The truth is, it is hard to make ends meet. But hey, are you looking for a different life style and way of being or just financial security. If it's financial security maybe Hawaii in general isn't for you.

Never considered moving tp the east side because I love the Kona side and HATE rain !! ( now living in a country where it ALWAYS rains :P). But hearing Amber she makes me feel we would really fit in on that side!. But then the rain........🤔

you are so wrong about people in general, what they like and dislike. Farmers markets are all over the Island, from one end to the next. Great diving all around the Island and most of the beaches are on the Kona side. North Kohala is very rural and fine. They did not really cover the ranch scene, cowboys, rodeo's and fun. If you want more info contact me in the reply section of the comments and I'll fill you in for sure on the real deal.

There are so many variables here when it comes to buying land.Lava zone, rainfall, no utilities, dirt roads, elevations, safety, etc.

What about bugs, especially cockroaches? I don't want them on my bed! Those huge caterpillars?

    • @1-SmallStep
      @1-SmallStep Рік тому

The centipedes are extremely bad news - the Asian variety with extremely painful stings. The cane spiders are huge and have barbs in their legs so if they get on you they are there to stay. Cockroaches everywhere. EVERY WHERE. Mosquitoes to the point that will require a blood transfusion. But, WORST OF ALL BY FAR -- fire ants. You can't see them but you will definitely feel them for a long, long, long time.

@@ms.rlsteele351 Unfortunately, all of these pests came in on ships mostly. Oh, I forgot the rats. They chew holes in your screens and get in your house. When you see the metal strips on trees there, that's to prevent rats from making nests at the top and falling on people. Then, there's the overt/covert racism against haoles and especially black people. Older gen not so bad but the youngsters have a huge chip on their shoulders. Getting anything done is very difficult because no one shows up after you hire them. I lived on the BI Hilo side for decades and nothing changed. My closest relationship was with my Terminix dude : ) but at that time even he couldn't get rid of the fire ants. Friends who owned orchards sold and fled ahead of the infestation moving north from Puna where they were imported to about 20 years ago . : (

    You conveniently left out:
Rampant CRIME. Property theft, auto theft, etc.
    serious Homeless issues
    Meth use
A serious problem with abandoned animals, and animal control that euthanizedsover 140 stray animals a MONTH.
Traffic during rush hour due to roads that aren't big enough.
    Mold. Mold and more mold.
Yes, the east side of Hawaii is nice, BUT let's be honest in it's portrayal.
