    Hawaiian Big Island native here! If you want some good breakfast, go to Ken’s Pancake House in Hilo. It’s menú has definitely downgraded but it’s still good. If you want a snack, go to Tex’s. They make some ono malasadas.

    Gonna add a few things, if youre gonna see the shores, especially the rocky ones or ones with plenty of waves, NEVER turn your back on the ocean, its something locals know, especially opihi pickers and shore fishermen, the waves can sneak up on you and take you out or slam you against reef or rocks.
    If you get dragged out to sea by rip currents, dont fight it, let it take you or swim parallel to shore, youll just exhaust yourself and drown, eventually itll take you to a more calm area.
    Dont leave your valuables in your car, especially in tourist areas, theres a lot of good people here but theres also crooks and crackheads here too, rental cars are easy to spot.
    Dont try to be hot shit and jump off rainbow falls, youre not the first to try, and it seems like each year, at least one tourist dies, you die an idiot and no one feels bad for you. Goes for boiling pots too, dont swim in it if you dont know what youre doing.
    Dont swim or drink from rivers, we have wild pigs and they can carry some disease, they crap near rivers and it gets into some streams. Idr what diseases they are but theyre serious ones.
    The tap water in hilo tastes great, if youre in kona, get bottled water, it tastes like crap there.
    And as others have mentioned, and very important, DONT BE AN ASSHOLE, treat others with respect, in person and on the road, be courteous, and youll likely get the same treatment. People here dont ‘’hate haoles’’, they hate how many from the mainland act, some mainland people come here with respect and get along fine all their lives living here, theres assholes from the mainland that act up and get their asses beaten and move back to the mainland and cry that hawaiians are racist. Just be respectful.
    Also, fun fact: the end of water world was filmed in waipio valley

      I live at kona and what you say about don’t turn your back to the ocean is true and I heard learned that the hard way, and now that it’s summer so much tourist going downtown and at the harbor that I get annoyed by them

    • @tommydan55
      @tommydan55 Рік тому +3

      I live in Kona and what you say about the tap water is nonsense. I've been drinking it for 50 years. It's rain water filtered by the lava rock on the way down to the "fresh water lens" that sits just above sea level. Then it's pumped up. It's about the purest cleanest water anywhere. Otherwise, good advice.

    Beautiful! Mahalo for taking the time to make this video and showing off the incredible scenery from all around the island.
    To all the locals out there. I understand that there’s a good amount of you who are criticizing and being disrespectful to this man for mispronouncing “Kamehameha”. Shame on you! Where is your Aloha spirit? This man already >>apologized in advance>poor pronunciation>beginning of this video

      Shame on you for looking down on us Hawaiians and telling us that we cannot correct the man for his mispronunciation of our language. He destroyed the greatest figurehead in our history and you are OK with that. We were once told that we could not speak our language or practice our religion and culture don’t tell us we can’t do that again.

    • @hurricaneblaine7751
      @hurricaneblaine7751 2 роки тому

      The sad part is you don’t realize that when you change the wording or the spelling and even the pronunciation of Hawaiian words it means something totally different.
      If this was your original culture you would understand that…. Mai (come here) does not mean the same as Ma’i(female menstruation)…. Hence…. Kamelamela(peaceful) doesn’t mean the same as Kamehameha(The Lonely One).
      And if you moved here wanting to Hanai our ‘Aina then you need to learn how to use our simple 12 letter language.

    I live in Kona and take all my visitors to most of what you've put down as "musts". However, you forgot a big one: Pu'uhonua O Honaunau National Historical Park (Place of Refuge). I specifically take them here to let them understand the beauty of Hawaiian culture and engineering. It is a place of great beauty. I usually, if open, include the Painted Church since it's on the way down.

      Perhaps you’re referring to the Onomea Botanical Garden? not Hawaii B.G. It’s located on the Scenic Drive, turn-off Hwy 19 at Papa’ikou toward the ocean; If yu don’t want to enter the garden, just south of it there is a lovely County maintained walk off Scenic Drive that passes through the garden but doesn’t allow you in. Great view of the fallen arch, cove, walk across Alakahi stream to spit of land for picnic or just a sit and watch the waves come in. Definately a prime photo op. (I live just above the garden). Aloha.

      But Hilo farmers market has never been the same for years.

    ☺️ Everytime I go to the Big Island I bring my lightweight jungle survival hammock with some basic gear that fits in my backpack and go to my "secret" campground outside hilo for 4-6 days of a 10 day trip depending on weather and length of stay. It keeps me close to town and all the amenities while giving me some real seclusion... During covid most of the obscure areas are even more empty than normal and make for a very cheap vacation if you budget properly.

    My favorite coffee on the Big Island is at the Ka'u Coffee Mill. Not that far out of the way if you're going down to Ka'u where the Green Sand Beach is. Go to the coffee gift shop. They have a variety of coffee and roasts there. Their dark roasts are to die for. And for this reason I actually prefer it over the Kona coffees.

      @@Active_Tours I would say the Big Island! It just has so much stuff to do, and I like the contrasts between the fancy resorts of Kona & the bohemian hippie town of Hilo. But also because, the island itself looks like some place that could never possibly exist on planet Earth. The first time I saw the lava flows, black sand beaches, etc. I was like "What the heck is this?! This might be one of the most bizarre islands I have EVER seen..."
      I like Kauai too because of the lush greenery, but IMHO BI is one of those bucket list places that I think everybody needs to visit at least once just because of how unique it is. If you like unique travel destinations, oh boy, you're gonna love the Big Island.

      @@Active_Tours Tough call, but I'd have to go with probably 90% of visitors & say Volcanoes National Park (although I unfortunately didn't get to do that nighttime snorkel with manta rays).
      I liked Mauna Kea too, but the tours are pretty expensive, and the altitude is no joke (I was okay, but several other people in my group were feeling faint/complaining about throbbing headaches). My recommendation would be to just go up to the Visitors Center, since that's where the public stargazing is anyway & you can safely drive there in your rental car.

    Waipio is probably not a great idea for visitors at the moment. Definitely don't be driving your rental jeep down the already busy road. If you visit the overlook try to go early or late in the day to avoid the lack of parking. Show respect, tread lightly, and be aware that this road was not designed to handle the amount of use that it currently is seeing.

    Most if not all rental car agencies don’t allow their vehicles into waipio valley. It will void your contract and they may/have charged people for going there. Most cars have gps and they do check.

    • @Active_Tours
      @Active_Tours  3 роки тому

      Oh great tip!!! Read those contracts!

    • @hankdavis7833
      @hankdavis7833 3 роки тому +1

      You are still correct. 4 wheel drive ONLY, not AWD, allowed in the valley and will void your contract if caught. There are guards posted at the top of the road down. Same with the road to the top of Mauna Kea.

      29 years ago when first in Hawaii we saw a vehicle halfway buried in the sand stuck down at the river at the bottom. Who was Kamalamala ? I was thinking for a moment 😍 Waipio is about the most special place on big I.

      Dude... im born and raised in Hawaii and you gotta listen to that feeling. This island is a very beautiful, magical place that is just on a different wave length. But its also very dangerous and has its secrets. The island will eat some people up, spit um out and leave them with nothing but if the island calls you that deeply... YOU ANSWER! 😉 it means she wants you here. Just come with an open heart, respect for the land and the people. And always listen to the locals.

    Aloha! My wife and I are going to have about 7-days to visit the Big Island from around July 5th through the 11th. Would you recommend staying in one place or maybe splitting our stay between opposite sides of the island?

    • @Active_Tours
      @Active_Tours  3 роки тому +2

      If you want to see everything I recommend you split your stays between opposite sides. If you’re looking to just relax I recommend you stay in one place. Hope that helps

      Apologizing is not acceptable bc you haven’t done your homework on pronunciation of language.. more abuse of Hawaiians.

      Please no jumping off waterfalls. Flash floods can happen in a matter of seconds on the Big island. Go to Coconut island in Hilo or south point if you want to jump off. Careful at south point tho cause get plenty locals who fish out there.
