Situational awareness is the #1 lifesaving skill you can have. If I’m about to enter a shady part of town, I load one up. Otherwise, I carry unloaded because for CCW, safety is my #1 priority, not quickness of deployment.

Couldn’t agree more. If you were so blindsided by the situation that the half second to rack the slide makes much difference, you’re not situationally aware enough and you need to work on being more aware of your surroundings. Carrying with an empty chamber allows you the peace of mind of an extra layer of safety. If you feel you’re chances of needing your weapon are higher than normal you can always take a second to put one in the chamber until you’re out of that situation but for the vast majority of the time I’d take the extra peace of mind that the gun literally can’t ND/AD

My exact philosophy. I carry just about everywhere but rarely go anywhere I need to worry about.
If I get a bad feeling I'll take the half second to chamber a round but otherwise I would rather not worry about the chance of accidental discharge, no matter how minor that chance may be.

Same with having kids. You could have the best routine and be the most disciplined person that unloads your firearm whenever you get back home and securing that firearm safely away from nosey kids.
Until the one time you don't... because we all make mistakes. And we aren't perfect.
Carrying one in the chamber opens you up to mistakes... something even the most disciplined shooter can fall victim to over.... years..... and decades of carrying. We are human. We make mistakes. And with kids in the picture, it's a non-negotiable for me. I will not have a racked firearm around my kids for a 0.4 sec faster draw.

Hey, I understand new carriers being nervous about carrying with one in the chamber. When I started years ago, I too, was nervous about it. And I’ve been shooting all my life but never carried. But the first force on force training class I took cured me of that. I’ll say 7 out of 10 times when the instructors would come at us like they were simulating an attack (especially the knife attacks) I couldn’t get to my gun fast enough without having to use my support arm to keep them off. I could get my gun out, but no way could I use my other hand to rack the slide. And I knew they were going to come at me. In real life, you don’t know. It happens that fast.

Nervous shooters should not be carrying a weapon. Overcome you fear first before someone, the bad guy, takes your weapon from you and hands you your ass.

I agree with you 100 percent. People don't seem to understand how fast the need for your weapon can come up and how difficult it can be to get to it even in perfect circumstances. Even when YOU KNOW ITS COMING. In everyday life you won't be expecting it.
Carrying when new can be scary. I'm all for someone carrying the gun unloaded. For a very short time. Just to get used to having it on you. Then upgrade to having the magazine in it. Finally, put one in the chamber. There's not much difference in carrying unloaded than not carrying so if it's for the purpose of getting used to it that's cool. It should be for a limited time though. The quicker you can carry with it ready to go the better imo.

I carry one in chamber with a thumb safety. It's all about comfort level matched with proficiency. If you dry fire regularly, unholstering while taking the safety off will happen almost simultaneously and much faster than racking the slide. Plus it prevents a premature trigger pull that may cause you to shoot your leg or junk off.

Eventually, my fear was eased through research, training, and a PROPER HOLSTER (Tulster, always a Tulster). There is never a time that a round is not chambered when my weapon is on me. Thank you for posting this video!
I also bought a Striker Control Device (AKA: “The Gadget”) to satisfy my muscle memory of “thumbing the hammer” when reholstering. I was taught to shoot on a Beretta double action and that was drilled into my head, and that little backplate gives that action some meaning with the Glock.

      @John-vm2sq Рік тому +7

Yep, for concealed, you're using your offhand to lift your shirt or clothing...so your offhand is already right there.
For me it's this simple. I carry empty chamber because I have kids. That simple. I can be the most disciplined person and have the best routine in clearing my firearm when I get home for the day.... until the one time I don't...
Because we are human. It isn't a lack of confidence or a sense of paranoia. It's just me understanding that humans make mistakes. And I will not gamble my kids' own lives (due to a mistake I made) in exchange for a 0.4 sec faster draw....
People think CC always results in some sort of high noon Annie Oakely quick draw. No. It doesn't. If you need 0.99 secs on a draw to kill an attacker, you've probably screwed up somewhere along the line of situational awareness and putting yourself in a bad situation. And carrying concealed, especially around kids, safety should trump speed every time.
If you build racking the slide as part of your draw muscle memory, then that is the best balance between safety and being prepared/trained. With kids, it's a non-negotiable. A racked firearm means there is zero zero zero room for error. And I'll be honest, I'm not arrogant enough to think even the best routine and discipline is mistake-proof.

But if I'm going to a nice part of town then I may not. For me, I guess it just depends on where I'm at or what I'm doing that determines if I'm going to have one in the chamber or not. @@Irv23 carry one in the chamber 90% of the time.
Inside your house, yeah you can keep the chamber empty if you want or if you have kids in your house.
Just take the mag out, rack the slide back and lock it (and put the round that was in the chamber back in the mag)
And let it sit like that in your house. Either with the mag next to the gun or with the mag in your pockets and the gun close by.
That way you can load the gun quite fast.
But the moment someone rings your doorbell or when you leave the house you better carry a loaded chamber and have the loaded gun in reach.
The moment you realize a gunfight is about to happen untill it the first round is fired it's 1-1,5 seconds on average.
Usually on average 3 rounds within three seconds are fired.
There is just not enough time to reck the slide back that 1 second before the shooting starts.
Yeah, sometimes you notice that something bad is about to happen because the criminals behave strange and you will recognize it in time to pull out your gun and load a round.
But very often you just don't have the time.
One second Everything is normal, the next second a gun is already pointed at you.
You have to decide what is more important for you:
-Carry no round in the chamber out of fear something bad might happen (with the exception of kids at home, then you can or even should carry no round in the chamber, after all there is still a door between you and the criminals)
But be unprepared for most gun fights when sh*t hits the fan because you don't have the time to rack the slide or you just forget it.
      Or
Carry a round in the chamber but with the danger of it accidentally discharging and hurting you or someone else, but with the benefit of being able to immediately defend yourself when you're attacked.
You have to decide what benefit is more important.
A gun to accidentally fired into your leg or you child will accidentally kill you or your child.
(Happens several dozend times per year)
      Or
A gun that doesn't fire, when you need it the most because your forgot to load a round in the chamber or because there is no time to do it will also get you and your child getting killed, just because the criminal won't give you time to do it and he will immediately open fire. Or even worse, grab the gun from you, rack the slide and kill you with your own gun.
(Also happens several dozend times per year)
A gun is a potentially deadly and always dangerous weapon.
With and without a round in the chamber, it can always kill you.
It can kill because there IS a round in the chamber and it can kill you because there is NO round in the chamber.

I'd like to suggest that anyone who CCWs try out a USPSA match. Shooting under pressure of the stopwatch will expose all the defects in your gun handling skills. The sheer round count will also ensure that you will have to employ remedial measures; FTF, FTE, mag malf...you name it, it happens in matches.
On top of that, the matches are just fun. I was intimidated at first but the people at the matches were super welcoming and helpful. They all have a vested interest in keeping you and themselves safe.

i carry one in chamber but look at my video on how fast racking in the pull push method from a glock you can chamber a round from the hip and fire, for me its only at most 2/10 ths of a second difference, so yes having a round in chamber we all know is quicker but this is not to say someone is doomed just because someone is 2/10 th of a second slower on the draw, draw speed is only one of many variables we need to have in a defense situation, to me situational awareness and reading body language can make up for the slower time if one choses to carry with a empty chamber, the argument isnt that drawing with one in the chamber isnt quicker, we all know it is quicker but the argument that being a little slower means doom isnt nessesarily a death sentence because of many variables other then just draw speed have to work in our favor to win the gun fight, in my oppinion its starts with situational awarness, this gives you a head start before he even thinks about drawing on you, other variables like how you use cover, your tactics and so much more i could list, its like a cake recipe, if you dont have all the ingredients (variables) it wont be a complete cake, this why you see though someone has a faster draw speed it doesnt mean they win the gun fight, for example someone who is a crimminal a cop is about to arrest that has no training or skill at all in firearms nor has seen a gun range kills a police officer who didnt see it coming, sadly we dont want this to happen but it shows how speed isnt the "end all be all" in a gun fight, its so much more then your draw, mag capacity and shooting skills because situational awarness is speed its self, reading the cue something bad is going to happen giving you time ahead of the threat, since most defence situations are with in say 7 yards you can rack a slide chambering a round and fire hitting the target still at those short distances, longer distances we should be going for cover if possible right away even if we got one chambered

I agree. Nice demo and video. Having a round in the chamber is advantageous for iwb and owb carry, but the pistol should be in a good holster all the time to avoid accidental trigger pull. Mexican carry or a bad soft holster with loaded chamber is dangerous. But for safety reasons, carry without round in the chamber with fully loaded mag works too, just be fast in racking the slide, only it needs your support hand to charge.
But for vehicle, backpack, and fanny pack carry, loaded chamber with fully loaded mag in a holster or no holster is ok. And also, a .45acp pistol with jhp ammo with extra loaded mags reserve is an effective concealed carry.

Since I started carrying a firearm, I have always carried one up. My firearms in storage are empty chamber with no magazine. I always know the condition of my firearms (especially my EDC). One up is the way to go with my EDC as you can practice as much as you like and you might be able to get 2 second times on a range with draw, rack, aim and shoot, but all and all, the attacker comes towards you with a weapon that's already drawn and if the attacker is using a firearm it's already one up and drawn, placing you at a huge disadvantage. Doing 2 second draws and rack on a range is one thing doing it consistently is impossible in real life, one being having to draw and rack in awkward spaces as attackers tend to attack when you are in the worst spaces like in your vehicle. So I have my EDC set up with one up and I spent good money on a high quality kydex holster as the holster is a safety of the system I have that consists of a CZ P10S.

I carry on the same principals One being I am very new to Conceal Carry. Current prices I only get range time about twice a month and I am not allowed to draw from a holster, so my training for draw is done strictly at home and with a laser Round. Second Factor is that I work from home so my attire mainly consists of gym clothes which lead to my purchase of a G42. I do plan on moving to condition 0 or 1 depending on my future purchases as I also have a Canik TP9SC. Training and Environment are my 2 deciding factors. Love your knowledge and videos!

I would like to add two important details: First, Israeli Law doesn't "require" that you carry Condition 3, but if you do and anything bad happens (like accidental discharge), you will lose you're license permanently. Second, we are not obligated to carry concealed. If you have a license, you can carry any way you want, including total exposed. So the time a lot of people lose from having to rack the slide is around the same as you might lose from having to expose the weapon.
Also, I should mention that we practice this method a lot, and learn to purchase the target as we rack the slide. Regardless, Condition 1 is obviously faster. No one can really argue that, but I hope this information helps provide context.

One in the chamber argument assumes every altercation is a fast draw scenario. I’d like to see one of these videos show data on how often that’s actually the case. I personally prefer unchambered for various reasons. However there are times when my surroundings or instincts may lead me to go with one in the chamber. But, it’s a personal decision that each individual has to make based on their situation and level of experience . I would also make the observation that most individuals currently applying for their CCW these days are new to concealed carry and in many cases firearms in general.

I understand your point of view, but the stats don't matter if your encounter is one of those that happens in just a few seconds, and you don't have time to chamber a round. In that case, you are dead. So why not err on the side of survival? With regards to the argument of lack of training, I agree proper training is required, but guns don't go off by themselves. With a proper holster that covers the trigger guard, that gun is not gonna go off, and the answer is proper training so that you don't have to carry in a way that risks your life. Besides, the person. With little training also won't be able to rack that slide in time either.

I am having this debate with myself and my wife also. I carry one in the chamber at the range and I am practicing drawing and taking the safety down and firing with an OWB holster. I intend to do this for months before I decide how to proceed. I am planning on using mantis x and laser academy and cool firings to practice aim and holstering / unholstering in the house with no ammo. After months of that I will be better equipped to determine my own level of confidence and skill as well as more informed on whether I am confident enough to carry loaded. I will never carry without a manual safety though. That is already decided. I am willing to risk the tiny bit of time for the safety but I am a regular guy. I do not unholster and rack a pistol ion 2 seconds. It likely takes double that as I am a little older. So if it all comes downy to a split second I'm gonna lose that one anyway so whats another .5 secs for the manual safety?

I think this instructor has very good knowledge about carrying one in the chamber does have it’s pros and cons in whether you should carry one or not have one in the chamber ready. I believe we all should have one in the chamber ready in case of gun fight. My point is when it comes to your own life on the line you need an ammo to be ready to defend yourself against an attacker. The time is so important when it comes to your personal safety. Never carry concealed if you don’t have a bullet in the chamber ready. If you think have one in the chamber is still unsafe or it’s just not for you to have one ready then you should get some lessons from your state concealed carry class or get with someone who has been trained in to carry concealed with one bullet in the chamber. Don’t forget it’s your life or your family’s life on the line when it comes time you need to protect them. Even the guns in my office have a bullet in the chamber ready to go in case of emergency situations. Watch this video to learn why it’s important to keep one in the chamber ready.

One thing a pistol shooter should do. Years ago I watched a Clint Eastwood film. He did an activity which all pistol fires should consider, he took a stick, tied a rope and the tied a rock, he held his arms out straight and slowly rolled that rock up and down, made it burn and hurt in forearms. That's actually a good muscle building exercise to do, it builds incredible strength in your forearms to carry and fire , to brace the recoil, to hold your piece steady and strong....and this may sound odd, but every shooter needs to have at least once...slide bite. A pain like that will tougher you up some. Guys or gals... need to get steady with that pistol. Holding and bracing it solid in your grip. Its good to work out your hand dexterity forearms strength. A 9mm can throw your arms back if you don't have a solid forearms grip.a .38 or .45? A lot more kick. In the Army I qualified on the 50cal, that was so heavy that It took three soldiers to carry, the barrel, the receiver and the tripod. A M60 was no light firearm either, strong guys struggled to fire a M60

But if you would put that target in about 5 yd or closer pull fire from retention Keeping your non shooting hand on the cover garment that you raised to your chest, you would even be quicker. We practice Retention engaging on 1 or 2 targets. On a side note if you're uncomfortable with carrying a semi automatic handgun with the round in the chamber because you're new to carrying concealed, then I might suggest starting with a revolver but always keep your firearm in condition 1, and practice. Like I said this was a great video.

A thing you have to remember. While you might be sitting there thinking "oh about .8 seconds isn't much of a difference," you have to take into consideration that this person has trained very well and knows exactly what he is doing. He may be able to draw his gun, rack it, and fire down range in about 1.6 seconds, BUT that doesn't mean YOU can, and if you are not experienced in firearms, you may end up fobbling it around, not racking it correctly, etc. It is just easier, and quicker to have that round in the chamber.

I think the biggest reason carry in the chamber is if you miss a slide or don't pull slide all the way back or failure to feed malfunction in stress environment. Speed to me doesn't matter more than malfunction high rate when not having one in the chamber.

Something most people don't think about is if you have a negligent discharge (even with good training it can still happen) you can still be charged and serve jail time. Hopefully the stray bullet doesn't hit anyone/cause death. Hopefully you don't hurt yourself. Not taking the time to think about a situation will cause jail time. Maybe taking more than 2 seconds to process a situation will prevent a lifetime of jail time. Just my 2 cents. Never point at anything you don't intend to shoot but we unknowingly all break that rule every time we carry. Empty chamber adds more safety.

I’m on the side of not chambered. If someone is two feet away from you then you have to fight with them and try to create distance anyways. You dropping a defending hand to draw will most likely open your defense to get stabbed or knocked out on your draw side. Learning how to fight is a really really good defense. Especially paired with training with a gun. Let’s put it this way- your wrestling with someone and you now have a loaded gun being pointed in all directions including your body vs you relying on fighting them off enough to draw SAFELY for your sake and if during the struggle they get the gun it’s not ready to go for them either. It makes sense to have it just a twitch away from firing if you are just training calmly imagining a fight in a square ready stance compared to understanding a actual fight. Fights are random and chaotic. That’s if you can turn the attack into a fight instead of getting steamrolled. You want to be fighting for a good position not reaching down opening yourself up and getting torn up with your mind being only on your gun. Defend, fight, create space and draw. That applies for one in the chamber too.Learn how to fight first. I mean on the calm draw it’s .3 seconds longer to rack it? That gun can be taken from you too. Total control is impossible even with a gun in your waist. Sorry folks

I don't understand why a lot of videos such as this comparing the time difference between a loaded and unchambered gun. it's a given, condition 1 will always be faster the condition 3 unless you are a super grand master. What matters most is how you react when you're in an actual gun fight situation. Once you adrenaline runs, can you maintain your composure, draw your concealed gun and are you ready to point the gun and shoot if you have not experienced shooting someone before? Either its a yes or no answer, it doesn't matter if you are in condition 3 or 1. But that's just me.

There are no pros for not carrying a round chambered in your firearm… if you’re worried about carrying a loaded firearm, then you will just require more training so you feel comfortable carrying a loaded weapon… otherwise you shouldn’t be carrying one until you do… an empty firearm isn’t useless by any measure, but if you’re in a life or death struggle to protect yourself or your loved ones and you’re not extremely proficient at carrying in that manner, then you lose so much advantage in an altercation because of your fear and confidence in managing your firearm… that just translates into more training until your confidence in yourself and your skills eliminates that fear… IMHO

I only carry hot if I'm out somewhere at night or in a sketchy area anywhere else I'm just more observant to everything around me. Two occasions I've been somewhere and a gun went off in someone's holster both while they were sitting down in a movie theater it can happen to anyone.

that's all right. carry empty until you are comfortable carrying with one in the chamber. I am a newby in CCW. For the first few outings I carried empty but built up confidence by practicing my reaction, mentally visualizing situations and watching some YT explanations. Now, I carry with one in the chamber because I feel comfortable.

Disclaimer, didnt veiw to the end BUUUUUT All I'm going to say is this: your lowest unloaded draw, rack and shoot was 1.62 seconds ("in a perfect world lets just say ...") your lowest draw while loaded was 99 seconds after a decent 1.5 seconds. Training. It's all about training. Israeli solders MUST draw, rack and shoot their pistol with accuracy in 1.2 seconds. So it's doable, you just have to train. Train in your style of carry. appendix, hip, bag, one in the chamber or not ... train drawing your weapon. It's a motor skill.
