I live in monterrey, a big city on México, and there are mountains around the buildings. My house is in one of those mountains, so when the part around 9:00 to the end started I just looked my window and the sky was in an orange strange colour, the trees were moving by the air and it was so epic.... I love this planet, this music is the perfect meaning of what is like to be on the earth, I hope one day this could be in a golden record floating in the space like the voyager's one
This symphony has been a good friend of mine for years and years, and I never cease to find wonders within its pages. A complete masterpiece!
Tiovo, yes a VERY important and original orchestral work. You will be interested to know that it is actually Richard Bales conducting the National Gallery Orchestra (May 28,1972)... there was never a Sevan Philharmonic!
whoever you are behind this name, TheWelleszCompany... thanks, dal profondo del mio cuore. I will be grateful forever.
Sì, sono degli operatori culturali davvero eccezionali.
This is a supercharged symphony, and one of Hovhaness' best. A composers' realization of his own work is always valuable, and when it is the only recording of a great work, indispensable. I was privileged, however, to attend a Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra concert when Erich Kunzel conducted an extraordinarily vital performance. It was overwhelming, and with a world-class orchestra.
+ronald b woodall I would LOVE to hear this live.
Carl Sagan took music from this Hovhaness Symphony (starting about 18:27 on this UA-cam) for his epic series "Cosmos."
+Ronnie Moore That is so cool. Didn't realize that. May Carl and Alan both RIP, geniuses both.
It's exactly the part I was looking for when finding this track. Excellent piece of music overall. Different, but still cool.
I was about to post the timestamp so other Cosmos lovers could find it but I see you beat me to it... thanks for sharing!

RIP - carl sagan :)
13:25 Cosmos: Heaven and Hell
A beautiful and generous work. As I listen to more of this man's compositions, I admire him more and more. I like his melodies, rhythms and harmonies!
For decades or centuries I've been listening Hovaness and his pieces with "aleatoric" music. Supimpa (supersimpatic).
Vishnu!! the birth of the upper SOUL! awesome!! masterpiece!!
OK, let´s see whether I´m able to summarise. 1 - Hovhaness brought to me a quite a surprising new composition style, impressive sequence, here and there almost melting strings and metals as much he masters in keeping each sector under its own "individuality". Exemple? Mahler in the Lento/Adagio movements. 2- Yet, Hovhaness does not follow a specific "antecessor" - he maintains a dramatic coverture, maybe an heritage from his family region and original country? That is a major constant in all his works - or at least of those I heard. 3 - For whatever reason Vishnu leaves that scenario. Actually it´s like an island in a very ample "ocean", but a bare rock island. Is that supposed to mean he had in mind a turn-over in his composition profile ? Not so - after 1966 he composed quite a set of pieces, coming back to his main source. 4 - That´s why I reminded Strawinsky - Le Sacre du Printemps was a major "revolution" not only in Strawinsky´s works but also causing a fair influence on other composers .
Finally, let me make other comment on the same tone - indeed there are 2 other composers with such same strong but surprising personality - Olivier Maessien and Carl Orff. 3 solid mountains, in my humble opinion. Best Regards
Fascinating music!
Brilliant 👏 👏 cosmos 🌟 birthplace
Enchanting!
In reply to the people who argue that Hovhaness' music all sounds the same, this is a powerful counter example. This definitely does not resemble Mysterious Mountain.
2 people's thumbs were broken. No other possible explanation.
Ha ha!
The excerpt from The Music of Cosmos starts at 18:27 and ends at 20:07.
Whoa!
Love those undulating horns.
The first time I heard this piece, I thought, we should not assume we know what a god sounds like in action.
This should be as well known as KV550
Honestly, Hovhaness pieces and works level overall at a very significant content - besides he handles the metals in a quite superior inspired freedom- only quite a few deal with it using such mastery. But this Vishnu does not add too much. Some hesitations we are nor prepared to hear, divergence of consonation, und andere. But not that far away of, for ex., Le Sacre du Printemps, as far as I´m concerned. Thank you.
I have seven CDs of this composer music. There are certainly some great moments in his output. I can understand why some people don't like his sound. There is the constant overuse of the harmonic minor scale. An interesting and disappointing result of this is in his Mount Saint Helens symphony which makes this volcano sound like a volcanic eruption in Turkey. Also some would consider that he's a bit lazy in that he regularly reuses 'motifs' . For example, I hear a lot of "And God created great whales" and " Mount Saint Helens Symphony" in this symphony. This is why many say a lot of his works sound the same. I have to agree. But I still enjoy his music despite these faults. Is he the greatest composer of the 20th Cent. I don't think so.
Basil Brush well put my friend
Seminal. It really does sound like the creative forces going into the making of the universe. Which is likely why Carl Sagan & Co. chose this music for Cosmos. Most unusual. Different instruments and some of them used in unusual ways (like the trombones gliding about).
Me encantaría estrenar en Venezuela esta maravillosa obra. ¡Pero sólo tengo el score!
jaja pedile a Maduro una orquesta !
Once in a while Hohvaness lands on my home page and I'll click without thinking. Always glad too that I do. A wonderful voice albeit somewhat kitsch. Great palette cleanser before returning to the radical serialists. Kinda like a pungent, overindulgent raspberry vinaigrette before the main course. Dont hate me you wild fanatics...very tasty.
that was a delicious comment
I love how Hovhaness speaks to an often ignored interpretation of power in this work.
I hear some elephants trumpeting there as well.
Me recuerda a gloria coates y allan pettersson mezclados con bandas municipales
the part that starts at 18:27 sounds very familiar to me... do you know if it was used in a movie, perhaps?
Good catch zigguriot, it was used in the original Cosmos episodes.
thank you! knew i heard it somewhere :-)
Carl Sagan took music from this Hovhaness Symphony (starting about 18:27) for his series "Cosmos"
26:30 sounds like Cosmos, I can't place it. 13:25 sounds like Cosmos episode "heaven and Hell."
Out of chaos comes order. . .
Not sure if the Timpani is fucking up around 16:20 or not
Is this the most modernist Hovhaness work? He wrote some in a similar spirit?
Yes, the most modernist large piece of his I have heard. There are some similar "conctrolled chaos" sections in his Symphony No.23 "Ani" - but the rest of that symphone is tame, hymn-like writing.
Rather like Sun Ra in some places.
How does one write 19 symphonies?
What do you mean? He wrote a lot more than 19.
armageddon2419 Knowledge, patience and persistence.
LSD
He wrote 60 symphonies
Agustín Morales 67 actually
I wonder if orchestra members like playing this. This is probably not the best recording ever. Has the Berlin Phil or London Symphony made a recording of it?
