Hovhaness has never wanted to ‘’become a composer’’, but has simply wanted to compose, and compose he has. His output is voluminous. He became interested in the music of the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries and in the great polyphonic writers, in the later music of Dufay, Des Prés and their kin, and in the earlier Ambrosian, Gregorian and Armenian chants. He has found new ways to utilize archaic materials and employs frequently both modal sequences and polymodalism.

The harmonic perspective and chord sequences is amazing. They make you feel and see the world from another perspective: more panoramic, enjoying the powerful nature and feeling that you are part of it, Very beautiful !!!

Hovhannes is really beautiful stuff ... I like it more than the other nature composers of the US, Copeland, Grofé.... more introspective, deeper, less glittery and more MYTHICAL .....
can you feel the freezing wind off of McKinley, or the sun through the clouds over Half Dome ....

Copeland went after Hovhaness like a jealous chihuahua, deriding him and his music every chance he got. In my opinion, the overrated Copeland heard that mystical and definite something in Hovhaness that he, as a Zionist, would never know.

Mysterious Mountain was a remarkable experience the first time I heard it on the radio. I did not know the name of the piece, but actually imagined soaring around a mountain when listening to it. Imagine my surprise upon learning the name of the piece. Always an enjoyable experience.

Thank you so much for this! I had never heard this music before. What a wonderful channel you have where someone can discover such beauty!
I've read a bit about Hovhaness' life. His philosophy about the human soul is so true. Especially relevant in these times.

The start of this sounds like it was cribbed (ie nicked) from RVW's Tallis Fantasia. Or maybe he would have said it was a tribute?

    • @justinralls6432

Composers call it "homage" or quote - it is a tribute but also a citation of influence and musical inheritance. Great spot. Agree on the Tallis influence

Gorgeous, evocative orchestral work by Hovhaness, a prolific composer with interests in "nature" and astronomy. Yes, the composition of this work seems to have been influenced by RVW's music.

I picked up this music more than 20 years ago. It is a staple in my disc library. Living close to Mt. St. Helens brings the music up front and personal. Glad to live near the Pacific Rim of Fire. Thanks for the post.

I have this wonderful CD with two of Hovhaness‘ greatest works. I remain disappointed with much of the St. Helens symphony because it’s nature painting of the eruption is on the obvious & cliched side & not worthy of Hovhaness‘ imagination, IMO. The WHALES music from earlier also seems trite & trendy but these two compositions stand apart from all other Hovhaness music that I know & cherish.
THE MYSTERIOUS MOUNTAIN & HYMN TO GLACIER PEAK are the mountain tributes most notable IMO, of Hovhaness‘ compositions although I have many more works to discover. I remain in awe of his accomplishments. Also THE PRAYER OF ST. GREGORY is the most transcendent & moving 5 minutes of any music in my experience & a spiritual guide & blessing to the human spirit. Listening to THE MYSTERIOUS MOUNTAIN also reminds me of Vaughan-Williams TALLIS FANTASIA in its spiritual atmosphere & since it was composed a few years before Vaughan-Williams death I wonder if the great Englishman ever had the chance to hear it. They are true companion pieces. The late Hovhaness music for GLACIER PEAK is the 2nd memorable mountain tribute & I hope to see it close up some time soon.

My favorite passage begins at the 17 min mark ending at 19 mins 25 seconds. From enchantment to crescendo then finally climax! This piece is worthy to be a film score and get it the exposure it deserves!
