- Lesson on Glucose-6-Phosphate Dehydrogenase Deficiency: Introduction, Pathophysiology, Signs and Symptoms, Diagnosis and Treatment. Glucose-6-Phosphate Dehydrogenase (G6PD) Deficiency is the most common inherited red blood cell disorder leading to hemolytic anemia. Decreased levels and activity of the Glucose-6-Phosphate Dehydrogenase enzyme leads to impaired functioning of the pentose phosphate pathway, reduced NADPH generation and reduced ability of the red blood cell to handle oxidative stress in the form of reactive oxygen species (ROS).
The majority of individuals with this condition are asymptomatic but have periods of acute hemolysis due to triggering factors. Triggers can include infections, medications like dapsone and primaquine, chemicals like naphthalene and henna, and foods like fava beans.
Hey everyone! This is a lesson on the blood disorder known as G6PD Deficiency. In this lesson, you will learn about the epidemiology of G6PD Deficiency, the role of the pentose phosphate pathway in the disease, signs and symptoms of this disease, tests to help diagnose the disease and treatments.

I love how people throw the expression "in parts of Africa" while giving a very precise info on other population. Africa is huge and has very diverse ethnic groups with all the world genes existing just in Sub-Saharian Africa alone. So, please next time, tell us where in Africa.
Agreed more information would be great
Thank you sir
I have a question , what is the action of folic acid in this situation like does it reduce the hemolysis or act as a reducing agent??
hello. my baby has a g6pd deficiency. the confirmatory result is 15.61 while the normal range for a new born is > 16.22 U/gHb. Where can you consider my baby? Is it in Class IV or in Class V?
so helpful 🤍
Excellent.explanation.
hi, My brother is having G6PD, can he take Wheat grass as it is VERY high in chlorophyll which increase Red Blood cells and other things like vitamin A, vitamin C, vitamin E (alpha tocopherol), vitamin K, thiamin, riboflavin, niacin, vitamin B6, pantothenic acid, iron, zinc, copper, manganese, and selenium ?
I had no clue I had this deficiency. I was going to get a high dose vitamin c IV and my doctor ordered the test. The test came back that I had this gene 🧬. I don’t believe I have any symptoms but it’s good to know
Thank you so much for the video
What about glutathione supplementation instead of folic acid.
is it useful for this condition?
Hi! Just wanted to ask if individuals affected with G6PD can safely drink alcohol. Any answers would be great, Thanks! Great video by the way
Question:
Would supplementation with "N-acetylcysteine (NAC)" or "S-Acetyl L-Glutathione" or "liposomal glutathione" or "reduced glutathione" directly ... increase or counter-balance glutathione levels-shortages in individuals with a G6PD deficiency ??
Can't answer that but I have heard it's better to supplement with NAC instead of glutathione as this allows for better intracellular regulation of glutathione. Too much can be detrimental as with most things.
Should I take iron supplements?
No recommendation for foods that help? meh
What shall I do I like fava beans so much though I do know that I have had G 6 pd deficiency What shall I do O have the syndrome of bulemia nervosa to الفول المدمس والفلافل and once I eat any component of both I feel all my circumstances and ealth r oing down be severely jaundiced even though heaviness of my head stupor and coma I am ill I need exchange blood transfusion قرف عليه وعلى شكلي
my g6pd level is 36. normal range 6 - 20. anything wrong ?
I have g6pd
❤❤❤
References please
Brilliant video but I don't think you need to say glucose 6 phosphate dehydrogenase as many times.... Perhaps just say the letters and it would be much more pleasant to watch/hear. Good work.
It's only because of remember
Hello I have a deficiency in Glucose 6 phosphatase
My newborn grandson diagnose this G6PD
My gbaby was also diagnosed with this deficiency. Curious how has it been going? Change of foods to stay away from ect
19 and i just found out i have G6PD deficiency
I’m 56 and just found out.

You forgot to mention that G6PD deficiency is also an X-linked recessive (only in males)
No he didn’t - go to 47 seconds
It's not only in males! Females can have it too
@@SerendipityRules Yes, indeed!
