  • “Yamaha drums have been in my life since I started playing at eleven years old. My first kit was a Yamaha. They are the most consistent drums that I know. On my Yamaha Recording Custom drums I can express myself freely & musically. The incredible punch from these drums, their dynamic range, consistency and clarity, improves any of my musical situation with Mezzoforte or session work"
Born in Iceland, Gulli started banging on pots and pans on the kitchen floor of the family home in Reykjavik. He played guitar for two years and sang in a school band until the original drummer got sick and was forced to leave his chair. Practiced drums in the loft of the Briem family residence, while playing in high school bands and musicals, where he met Johann Asmundsson a co-founding member of Mezzoforte (1977). The pair soon met Eythor Gunnarsson and Fridrik Karlsson in a Reykjavik music store, where Fridrik sold guitars. They recorded and toured with the band internationally from 1982. Their first big worldwide success with the group was in 1983 with the U.K. dance funk hit "Garden Party" and the Surprise, Surprise album.
Gulli has since been nominated five times as the drummer of the year in Iceland.
Besides Mezzoforte, Gulli has written several drum and percussion pieces: incl. a piece for 5 drummers. In 1996 Gulli was called to record with Madonna, Antonio Banderas & Jonathan Price for "Evita the Movie" in London and later appeared with Madonna that same year with her own song "All by myself.

I’ve been playing Yamaha Recording Customs for a very long time. I agree with everything he said. The only thing I would add is; buy the best kit you can afford and practice every day.

I got to tell ya,I spend a lot of time listing to drums on utube and I have never heard a kit sound this good.I have owned a lot of hi end kits, experimented with a lot of different head combinations, and wood and never heard any kit sound like this.I know there is all kind of mics and recording gear used on these drums but that sound is what I hear in my head. That is the sound so many people are searching for.Could you please tell us the head selection and method of tunning for this video.thank you.

I’m pretty sure he uses coated ambassadors on batters. He used to I know least on it, you’re right there’s just something about yam imo. Even my old Yamaha absolute maple noveau kit kills it still. I ventured over to sonor for a while but I think I’m going to go back to Yamaha with this kit.

Thanks David, the goal was obviously to get a great drum sound for this occasion. My basic tuning is to take the 10" tom as high as it can go without chocking, bottom heads usually a 2nd or even a 3rd higher. The 16" goes as low as it can, without rumbling... Sometimes I tune them identically (both heads same tuning)... The clear and coated Remo Ambassadors are also a key in getting that warm openness and clarity. So then there are the mic's, processing and the playing. Its all playing a part in how things turn out. I try to play the kit firmly and balanced without forcing anything. Make sure its sounding as one complete instrument. Actually the Remo heads arrived about an hour before we started shooting at Gaga studios, so we didn't have too much time to tune, but i'm happy how this came out. These drums are consistent and strong sounding. More musical in many ways. I love the old Recording Customs too, but these are really great instruments. The 20" kick is also a big surprise in power, punch and volume. Thanks - G

@@katrinbriem There's certainly something to be said about the recording too. I don't know exactly what mics, preamps, etc. were used, but the recording is really good.

Didn't Gulli tour live with A-ha back in the mid 80's ?

    • @katrinbriem

Hi, Thanks for the question. No I did not tour with A-ha, but I know Morten Harket well and he sang one song on my solo album called "Gildas Prayer" which you can find on Spotify and youtube - Cheers, Gulli

I'm sorry, but whoever thinks the idea of constantly moving the camera in order to keep the viewer engaged is absolutely and completely mistaken. I find it completely annoying if anyone NEEDS to have all this movement on the video in order to keep paying attention, has problems. I had to slide to the comments to not be able to SEE much less watch, the video. I just listened to it with my headphones. Yamaha Drums, PLEASE, don't make videos like this anymore. You're doing Gulli Briem a disservice.
