I’m hoping to get one of these soon as I want a specific species that lives significantly longer than our common Carolina mantis,I just recently lost my female for the year, and it never gets easier.
Any tips I have a full grown male dead leaf mantis he hasn't ate in a week I've hand fed him crushed roaches and I've even fed him a berry he seems very active and doesnt seem like anything is wrong with him but hasn't ate in a while
How old is he? Males have a shorter lifespan and tend to slow down a lot once they hit maturity. If he eats but doesnt actively take like prey it sounds like youre doing the right thing by giving him the option once a week. Rusty eats way less than he used to and funnily enough last feed he threat-posed the feeder!
@@isaiahtaylor5608 About a similar age to mine then, and he hasnt eaten for a week or so but still quite happy... Im giving him another feed sunday so will see how that goes and report back, usually if theyre not showing any overt signs of discomfort its nothing to worry about - these heavily camouflaged types of mantis rely on opportunity to feed and can go weeks without eating so dont worry too much, just give him the chance to feed and if he's not interested then leave him to it. If he doesnt eat i'll likely offer him some honey just so he has some sustenance to keep him going. With male mantids, upon adulthood, any extra day is a blessing for them :)
Tried to breed my dead leaf pair last week. RIP Kev... If your dude needs a (slightly savage) female, let me know! Still waiting on ghost babies to hatch but all infertile so far. To be continued
Aw sorry to hear about Kev, at least he died doing what he loves! I'd love to get more of my males sent away and paired off so they can have a chance at continuing their genes, unfortunately i think this guy might be getting a little old now though so probably risky to try sending him off anywhere!
@@Wade_Wiley if you fancy giving it a go, you're welcome to take Miyagi and see if anything good comes from it. I'm only in needham now so not too far to travel :)
@@amyl9797 Ohhh sorry i didnt realise it was you! What species do you have at the mo or just ghosties and dead leaf? I'm always happy to give some away if they can potentially breed I always feel bad for them not getting the opportunity...!
@@Wade_Wiley ghosty and dead leaf are the only adult females I've got. I've got an adult male orchid, sub adult female orchid and a presub female cat's eye (my personal favourite). What's your mantis count up to these days?
@@amyl9797 Aw I have a male orchid and i wanted to get a female for him but at the time there wasn't any available! He's getting really old so i'm not sure how much longer he'll be around but could always try pairing him once your female matures if he's still with me. Love cat's eyes I did have one before and been keepin an eye out for another they're so fascinating. I've got 18 at the moment comprising 14 different species which is probably enough (for now).
Thank you for this video... I get my baby Tuesday 🖤

Hi, I want to ask, how long have you been waiting for your male Giant Dead Leaf Mantis to fly?
This was the first time I've seen him take flight like that, I'm sure he was spurred on by being out in the open!
@@Wade_Wiley ouhhh haha 😃
