The first 5 minutes of this clip contains my favorite scene in this series. The dialogue, the cinematography, and above all Morricone's hunting music all made it unforgettable.
This scene was rich and appealing. There was a cultural exchange, generational exchange, and an expression of a complex mixture of friendship and Father-like love by the ruler of possibly the strongest nation on Earth to a foreign young man who made a huge difference in lives of the ruler and his Empire, and who became an important member of his court. There is a sadness of old age that takes away strength and power of even the most powerful men and sorrow from losing a friend who will not be seen again due to the long journey ahead and aging ruler's decline. All this was beautifully expressed within 5 minutes, including the ruler's vision of his Empire and international cooperation.
4:18 "Take my hand, Marco. Remember when Mongols takes you by the hand, some of the spirit passes go over to you." Is this right, did I hear correctly?
The jealousy, the venomous contempt from people who have never travelled carries towards people who has... and expanded their horizon and level of consciousness they have gotten on the bargain. Never leave the cave they say. The shadows out there are dangerous they say. And if you dare go out there and come back with a different story than what they have heard in the shadows, they consider you as one of them - the enemy. One of the core traits of Roman made Christianity.

I never forgot this scene since I saw the series back in the early 80s.
Amazing. Beautiful acting and music. We could all learn from this humbleness.
Beautiful bit. Wonderfully acted. Kublai recovers our affection even as he recognizes his failure to unite his empire.
