Please give each of these films a try. Russian cinema has a lot of heart to it. This version of Alexander is very clean, better picture than my Criterion dvd. AND PROKOFIEV'S SCORE! MAGNIFICENT!
YES, the best part of the movie is the Great Music, which (see my comment above) I mumbled while swimming on the coast near my summer home, well into the winter of 2020-21, when we were locked down by COVID19. It went perfectly with the swim and the cold water!
One the most important films in the history. This is the blueprint of how the great battle scenes are made to this day, and Eisenstein did it almost one hundred years ago. The film also had very important ideological context in the day, as the imminent clash of USSR and Nazi Germany was on the horizon. Although communist and internationalist, USSR started to call upon the traditions of Russian people fighting the invaders.
Which is the irony and hypocrisy of Soviets calling ''Fascism'' evil, while promoting a form of racial nationalism when it suits. The liberal democracies do the same thing.
@@m0rvidusm0rvidus18 There was no racial nationalism in this film, I dont know which film you were watching, in the USSR there were films from many nationalities talking and celebrating their past, not just ethnic Russians.
As an American so interested in Russian history, this is one of the films I started with. Russia is such an expansive but diverse land, but people from The East and The West refused to recognize its authenticity and its soul. Many other beautiful Russian films followed this, and other countries cinematic ideas were also affected. Thanks for showing us this once more.
It's nice, of course. But you should not study the history of Russia based on this film. It does not correspond to the chronicles. Eisenstein said: "I'm making history here!" Yes, many of the characters are really real, but this amount of snow and ice raises questions. It's April, and according to the chronicles, the battle was on the grass. :) But the Ice Battle itself, despite its locality, pushed the threat from the west for a long time.
@bezdelniza39 So very true. The actual films don't have a lot to do with real Russian history. In fact, as you say, their often a load of crap. But for someone who has never even crossed The Atlantic, much less been in Central Asia or The Far East; films like this give that person an idea of the uniqueness of a country like Russia. Thanks, I never expected such a great reply on some movie obscure to 99% of Americans.
I lived in Russia for three years and was lucky to visit both Pskov and Novgorod, as well as the monument on the lake where the battle is said to have been fought. And as it was winter and everything was covered in snow, it made the experience even more unforgettable. Final message of the film: don't mess with Russia.

In the Alexander Nevsky cemetery in St. Petersburg are buried many of the greats of Russian culture, especially music. But not Prokofiev, who wrote the astounding music for this film (he's buried in Moscow). The cemetery and monastery are an easy walk from the main shopping street, Nevsky Prospekt. Don't miss it if you're in St. Pete.
Interesting facts. Alexander Nevsky was Eisenstein's "family saint." His maternal grandfather Ivan Konetsky was born near Novgorod. In St. Petersburg, he and his family lived next to the Alexander Nevsky Lavra. Ivan Konetsky was buried at the Lavra cemetery. Eisenstein's great-great-grandfather built a church in the Alexander Nevsky Lavra.
Wonderful movie and very actual in present day when western ''Crusaders'' although today they fight for "'Democracy and Freedom''' rather than Christ are waging war against Russia and Orthodox Slavic civilization, epecially the first scene is haunting given that movie was filmed three years before Fascist Germany agression against the USSR and now Germany are against supporting nazis.
A true masterpiece. But I wonder if it is at all possible to get the version with the 1995 soundtrack? Listening to the clear music by Prokofiev would elevate it greatly.

Unfortunately, her Father died the year I was born, but Grandma(sweet, jovial and very loving) continued to raise 6 children, 5 still at home. At the time of her death at 78, she had 16 grand children, 5 great grandchildren and 4 great, great...and she was the glue that kept everyone together. Every one got a birthday card with nice hand written note remembering a relevant story. Its been a blessing to me to know my German heritage. Grandmas maiden name was Liebenguth which was translated as: good love/life...They were lucky to get out before the Nazi reign of terror started in the late 20's- early 30's.
Not all Germans are the same as you may know... And not all Russians are the same, either.
They often were allies against Lithuania & Poland.

i was born in the usa and grew up thinking we were the best nation on earth. just like people everywhere think their nation is the best. but as i grew older and found out how evil my government really is ive had a big change of heart. america has done some bad shit around the world and at home, starting with the native people who lived here before. we have no right to judge any other country, we are just as bad as the rest. humans are the problem we will destroy ourselves in the end.
the world would be a much darker place without the USA...we're the ones trying to keep a lid on things....

This is a very narrow way of thinking. You can always condemn crimes of aggression even if your own country is the perpetrator.

Premiering on the eve of WW2 I can't help but think about the political significance of this film and how it was a way to introduce the upcoming conflict on the psyche of the nation.

Slava Bogu! Slava Rusii!
For 1938, this is pretty damn good!
This 1938 film turned out to be a prediction of the World War II and the USSR's Patriotic War against Nazi Germany.
A masterpiece of cinema.
That was a pretty awesome movie. Plenty of likeable characters to enjoy on screen. As soon as those Germans turned up all I could think of was Conan the Barbarian, for obvious reasons. Music was great too.
Wonderful movie!!! My favorite by Mr. Eisenstein!! ✌🇧🇷
A magnificent film. Thank you.
If you have time and desire, read the History of Russia.
Then you will know who is better. After Alexander the Great, only a memory remained. After Alexander Nevsky RUSSIA
Capolavoro assoluto. Alla faccia dell’ imperialismo Usa e vassalli
Prokofiev score made this movie even more powerful
To be fair, he was quite handsome, even as a dude I admit it.
My appreciation to Mosfilm for putting out this beautiful and amazing classic Soviet era film out with the english subtitles. Enjoyed it immensely. And look forward to more of the older soviet films.. Anything pre 1970's I so much love.
Fascinating connections. The cemetery is one of the best places I've visited in my three trips to Russia.

A brilliant film 🎉. 2004’s King Arthur steals the ice lake scene 😊. Impressive ❤. I’m guessing Darth Vader’s helmet comes from the Teutonic Knights
And Darth Vader is the Gift of the Wind from the 1967 Soviet science fiction film "Andromeda Nebula" based on the novel by Ivan Efremov.
Technically, Darth Vader's appearance was inspired by samurai armor. But I like your idea.
Good comment!
The ice lake incident is real from the battle of lake Peipus, also called battle on the ice.
I can hear Anvil of Crom starting from 56:56. Basil must have watched this masterpiece.

A truly great piece of cinema, regardless of it's age. It has a almost Hollywood feel to it.
If I remember correctly, Eisenstein took inspiration for his film work from watching John Ford westerns.

One of 10 best films of all time. I have one of top 5 Russian films that was removed. This is my Airshow part 1, 2, 3,. Notice the cloud formations in this film. Not by chance. Germans gonna try a 4th?
This is such a tremendous film, one of the best ever made, and it’s really sad that it rather presaged Operation Barbarossa. Thank God the Soviet peoples prevailed despite Stalin! I love the score by Prokofiev, too, and am watching this again after seeing a performance of the cantata Prokofiev arranged from the score for choir, orchestra and soloists….just tremendous! I do not use that word lightly. Despite using it here, twice! Cherkasov was born to play Nevsky, and his performance will live forever, along with Eisenstein’s magnificent vision.
what's with all the crosses?...did they view the russky's as infidels?
@@frankpienkosky5688Yes essentially that. During this time Catholic war lords like those of the Germanic Teutons and Livonian order don’t really consider the Russians as Christian. Likewise, the Russians didn’t consider the Catholics christian.
