As someone who has very recently taken an interest in pipes and pipe smoking I wanted to extend my deepest gratitude to you and your peers here on UA-cam for providing me and others like me a surplus of invaluable information to guide us where we would otherwise be lost

President Davis has always been the most intriguing non-Virginian historical figure of the United States. His ties to Catholicism I'm sure helped make him the man he was. Plus his personal pipe is the most beautiful I've ever seen.

From the moment I saw Shelby in Burns' Civil War series, I loved everything about him. Whilst at New Market Battlefield (VA) I found a copy of his trilogy on the War Between the States and inhaled every glorious word. I have ancestors on both sides of the conflict and my 600+ books are either philosophy, theology, or history - and I'd say about 75% of my history books are on the War Between the States. Thankfully I was able to tour Richmond before everything was torn down and if I could live in Gettysburg, I'd probably burst being surrounded by so much fascinating history and valor. God bless! Have a blessed and transformative Lenten season. Looking forward to the new channel, as well!

As A Southerner who very much holds close his Culture and Traditions dear, I often find myself hoping and Praying for my South to Secceed once again. Then and only then may we be able to exist as who we are without worry of persecution and demonization.

I have already discussed with my wife that if we have a son, his name will be Forrest.
As far as President Davis goes, I have been to Beauvoir more than once. It really is a lovely place. I have also been inside his original burial location, being the Army of Northern Virginia tumulus. His crypt front is still there, his signature was carved into it.

I did enjoy your reading, as I watched Shelby Foote`s TV series back in the 90s with my dear old Dad , now sadly gone, these many years. I also enjoyed your video on meerschaum pipe`s and it got me to root out this old meerschaum, I had discarded way back, as the stem had broken away from the bowl . I had kept it as it had solid gold ferrules etc. It is a Victorian pipe. Well! I managed to fix it very much to my satisfaction (I had been afraid to tackle it, in case I ruined it) but here I am enjoying it once again , with the bowl filled with Peterson flake. I managed to win a job lot of 13 antique meerschaum pipe`s for auction on E bay , I payed £345 for them , (I don`t know what that would be in dollars). So, no doubt that is going to keep me busy with my new found methods in pipe restoration. All the best, to one and all.

I myself am descend from what one would call blue belly yankees, my greet great uncles fought for the union from regiments formed from Minnesota. My pride in them and all the soldiers that fought for both sides during the war is without words. They were some of the bravest men that God ever laid on this land. I can say without any doubt that both sides had the reason for fighting and it was never as one sided as so many so called teachers would have people believe these days.
Mr foote is was and will forever be one of the greatest civil war writers and historians that was. 👍

I was in New Orleans last week and made sure to stop at Confederate Memorial Hall, which includes many of Mr. Davis' personal items. It was the first I learned that he was Catholic. Obviously, I must make the time to crack open the first volume of Mr. Foote's trilogy that I obtained months ago, as I am woefully undereducated when it comes to the Civil War.
By the way, Memorial Hall is just a few blocks' walk from St. Patrick's, which is a marvelously intact, historic church where I attending several sublime Solemn High Masses.

While I am born and raised in Kansas, I certainly share in your opinion of President Davis and the war and the South. One of my favorite biographers was the great Douglas Southall Freeman. While I respect and admire Davis, I very much love Robert E. Lee and the gentlemanly virtues and qualities exhibited by both of those great Southern gentlemen. Could you some time do a video on Freeman’s R.E. Lee? It is one of my favorites. I very much appreciate this idea of a new channel and look forward to hearing your thoughts on many topics.

Two of my favorite Jefferson Davis quotes:
    * "The principle for which we contend is bound to reassert it's self, though it may be at another time and in another form."
    * "I love the Union and the Constitution, but I would rather leave the Union with the Constitution than remain in the Union without it."

Are we there again ? Our " leaders " are simply dismissing the Constitution and Bill of Rights . Especially the current and prior Supreme Court of the United States of America 🇺🇸 . Our " leaders " care more about the WEF etc. and their agenda than our citizens . Thoughts ? 🤔

Alan, as you read the words of the great Shelby Foote, it reminded me of my first reading of his Civil War Narrative and how moved I was at that description of Mr. Jefferson Davis. Thanks to Mr. Foote's writing prowess, I was able to almost "see" Mr. Davis rise before the Senate that fateful day, erect posture and a sober and serious bearing, and deliver the words that he did regarding the direction of his home state of Mississippi. How moving.
Really look forward to your new channel and the study of history as it is one of my passions. Regards........

When addressing the Senate, what state rights did Jefferson Davis feel were being threatened by the Federal Government? Was it not, ultimately, the right of a state to treat a human being as property. To rise up and defend such a right is utterly apposed to the spirit of the American revolution. No amount of nostalgia should disguise the fact that Jefferson Davis chose to support a cause at whose very heart lay the fundamental rot of slavery.

    • @thepipecottage3301
      @thepipecottage3301  4 місяці тому +4

This is an unfair and inaccurate assessment, at least from Davis' view. Read the first volume of his work "The Rise and Fall of the Confederate Government."

I dont see how slavery was not in line with the revolution?
The revolutionaries were not slaves rebelling from their master.
The revolution was incited by the wealthy who were themselves slave owners. Property was part of the issue as well: they did not like high taxes, nor shoulders housed in their homes, nor their guns being taken among other things.
They also did not like laws being past without what they considered representation.
The southern rebels seemed to have a similar complaint. Only slavery was part of that complaint as well, and if it is just fine to start a war over that issue I find it odd that that same idea is not applied to any other place in the world..meaning America is not waging war over slavery in say Africa.
By the way I in no way support slavery or anything close to it. Just the reasoning here seems inconsistent? And tone and intent can be lost in type so please understand i am honestly and kindly stating all this not in some antagonistic tone or anything.

.....Our enemies are a traditionless and a homeless race; from the time of Cromwell to the present moment they have been disturbers of the peace of the world. Gathered together by Cromwell from the bogs and fens of the North of Ireland and of England, they commenced by disturbing the peace of their own country; they disturbed Holland, to which they fled, and they disturbed England on their return. They persecuted Catholics in England, and they hung Quakers....
(Jefferson Davis on New England Puritans)
