As an Irishman, I love the story of the man who asked his priest, 'Father, can I smoke while I'm praying'? 'Absolutely not, my son', replied the priest. 'Well then, can I pray while I smoke, Father?' 'Well of course - you can and should' replied the priest.

Love this stuff!! At 66, have been an avid reader of the Civil War, WW1 and especially WW2, since my father, a Company Comander (captain) was captured at the Battle of the Bulge. I wish the kids today could appreciate the great parts of our rich history. Am heartbroken that they are removing Southern military command names from our bases, i.e. Fort Hood...

In case you didn't know and are interested:
Tolkien's favorite Tobacco was Capstan Blue (and another blend they no longer make)
If you are a Fan of the Movies: They smoked Peter Stokkebye PS24 Nougat throughout the filming of the LOTR trilogy, and the Village Squire sells some amazing Middle Earth blends.

@Guy you are correct. Capstan Blue (one of his favorites) and Capstan yellow (one he enjoyed - but less frequently) are still being made - though they are perhaps slightly different. They used to make one called Navy something another too though. I'm blanking on the full name, but he liked it and they no longer make it.

Though not about the South, the Civil War or anything to do with America, C.S. Forrester's Hornblower series captured my mind as a young man. Every so many years I revisit it and am taken off to some wind blown warship beating about off the coast of France during the napoleanic wars. Great literature can capture so many different stories and slices of human life. I think we're missing the concept of imagination in modern culture, with our cell phones and touch screens everywhere.

This sounds interesting, does the story jump around to major events or similar to an hour by hour deck log? I would find the mundane parts of life at sea fascinating. Thank you, Mr. Harrelson, for this episode. On your recommendation, I ordered a hardcover of Larry Brown's "Billy Ray's Farm." I've added a couple of Wendell Berry's works and Shelby Foote's Civil War opus to my wish list.
Congratulations on joining the universal Church! I'm a convert to Catholicism myself, about 10 years ago at the Easter Vigil. The journey's been a blessing, though sometimes a bit bumpy, like pushing a wheelbarrow over rocky ground.
I'm pondering the benefits of smoking a pipe. The rest of the lifestyle already fits me like a like a glove. I was addicted to cigarettes for decades, and to nicotine substitutes for almost a decade after that. I'm a little skittish about resuming a relationship with that "bête noire"...
I grew up in rural Illinois, on a family farm ultimately lost to family disintegration and financial lack-of-good-sense. Your extolling the virtues of Southern agrarianism rings nostalgic but true. After almost 30 years trotting the globe as a soldier, I've finally settled in Mississippi, not too far from where my ancestors from the 45th Illinois Infantry spent a summer on the outskirts of Vicksburg.
I've begun to reach out to Country Squire in Jackson. Maybe they can hold my hand as I dip my toe into the world of quality pipes and fine tobacco.

As bibliophile myself, I find that pipes and books certainly go hand and hand, so much so that I just renovated my little office space at home into a reading and pipe smoking room where I can enjoy these two things together in a unique and comfortable setting.
As this is such a passion of mine I can't help but state my love for reading Tolkien's work with churchwarden pipe filled with a Middle Earth blend from Town and Country or Tolkien's favorite, Capstan Blue.

Going back years when I first read CSLewis - God in the Doc I recall the heady/heart mixture wanting more ...wasn't until after undergrad studies I picked up the pipe & full emersion a la Three Nuns. That only lead to The Hobbit a la Capstan Blue in a Peterson then much later Granger in a Falcon as I dove into Jung. Cigars were left for Freud and just unwinding etc....but all said I fully agree Pipes & Books go hand in hand. This is an interesting idea. I personally started smoking a pipe VERY recently (within the past month) and I can say that since I have started the number of books I have read has increased. I think that there are two reasons for this. The first one being that smoking a pipe harkens back to more simple times. Back before there was so much mental stimulation. Second, I have found that sitting down to smoke a pipe is a very calming experience. It feels odd to grab my phone and start mindlessly scrolling after doing something so deliberate like packing a bowl etc... Grabbing a book and reading just adds to the calming experience. I smoke a honey blend of tobacco which my family actually really enjoys, it tends to bring them in as well, and I have found many times that the house just settles. What better time to get into a good book when the house is settled.

love history, philosophy, biography's, science and technology and economic's etc. it took me 10 years ro go through will and ariel durants story of civilization. would love to go through " the great books". so many books and so little time, hahaha. a book with a different take on the history of the united states was written by strauss and howe called generations. it was how each generation influenced the next. an interesting and informative and enjoyable read. i'm 67 and enjoy life but i worry where civilization is headed. thank you for your enjoyable video and long live the art of pipe smoking!

I am enjoying your channel. Now I am wanting to order “A Golden Weed”. That sounds interesting since I came from a tobacco farming family. I also worked in tobacco myself as a teenager here in South Georgia. Im gonna have to check into Billy Ray’s Farm as well. Thanks for the suggestions. I do enjoy reading old farmer perspectives and bird hunting books.

Another great book, in my opinion, is Southern By the Grace of God, by Michael Andrew Grissom. Being of southern heritage and the descendent of a Confederate officer this book is of particular interest to me. It is also a great read to understand the differences in the people that settled the colonies and how history can be manipulated.

Really enjoy the videos. I have had a busy few months and unlike most UA-cam videos, I don't like to just let yours play in the background. The book I've been reading when enjoying a pipe, besides the Bible is Fredrick Courteney Selous "A Hunter's Wanderings in Africa". Thanks for the recommendations. I'll have to check some of those out.

Not a pipe smoker( but I collect pipes XD) a book I would add would be the divine comedy. It is my favorite book, one that is masterfully written and keeps one on the edge of their seat. It tells the story of a man traveling through hell itself to reach his beloved.

A set of books I highly recommend for anyone who finds themselves discussing religion / religious ideas often is Mircea Eliade's "A History of Religious Ideas" in 3 volumes. His ability to give you a genuine sense of what people believed throughout the history of human existence is unparalleled, and as truly all things are at their bottom religious, understanding your own religious views in a deeply historically and anthropologically grounded manner is critical.
Other books I have greatly enjoyed include (in no particular order):
    Till We have Faces
    A Severe Mercy
    A Gentleman in Moscow
    Surprised by Joy
    The Great Good Thing
    The Everlasting Man

I could go on for hours, that's just what's on my 'need to re-shelve' shelf at the moment. Oh- Mark Twain and Hemingway and Mark Helprin, of course.

I love reading theology and even writing sermons while smoking.
C.S. Lewis inspired me to read more theology while smoking. This is possibly my favorite C.S. Lewis quote from his introduction to On the Incarnation by Athanasius: "I believe that many who find that 'nothing happens' when they sit down, or kneel down, to a book of devotion, would find that the heart sings unbidden while they are working their way through a tough bit of theology with a pipe in their teeth and a pencil in their hand."

Alan, you could do a lot of these discussions on books. I'm an avid history reader and particularly on WWII, since my father fought at Pearl Harbor and throughout the Pacific. Although there are so many great books on this subject, for me, the staples for understanding World War II are: At Dawn We Slept, the Rise and Fall of the Third Reich, The Winds of War, and War and Remembrance. Three great books to really understand the Vietnam War are: the Sacred Willow, Saigon, and The Cat From Hue.

Another excellent episode from you sir and I couldn't agree more. Pipe people are generally book people. I enjoy the classics like Illiad and Odyssey, The Divine Comedy and other classics. For modern books I especially like the Lord of the Rings and The Letters of J.R.R. Tolkien. Pipe smoking literature is also a joy to read especially the Ultimate Pipe book and the Theology of Pipesmoking.
