How have I not seen this knot before? I love it!

This is a Pitzen Knot. and you can not spin a sub 20 fly that way.

Correct. But you don't need to if you tie it this much easier way ua-cam.com/video/wj192wHBcbU/v-deo.html&ab_channel=OldDominionTroutBum

You can use this knot with less tag. Why is that important? You can use this knot for dropper flies. The longer your dropper the more likely it will tangle.

This knot leaves a fine tippet material, such as 5X, distorted into a stubborn curve just beyond the eye.

On streamers, pull out the knot after tying and you now have a loop, it will slide tight when you hook up.

what is a good knot for really small tippet (6-8x) when you may not have much tag end such on a dropper tag? I've been tying the clinch knot my whole life but it seems to break really easily on small tippet. I dont like using it on anything smaller than 5x.

There is an easier way to tie this knot...it is hands down the best knot for small flies!!

Thanks so much. Was just shown this today by a guide. I just didn’t quite follow it with the light tippet in the sun. Great demo!!

I've tried this with flies you can't spin it around the line.

Does the tag end stick out at 90 degrees it it was tied correctly?

Does the improved clinch knot still pinch the line aswell? I've never experienced this problem.

Great way to tie the 1620! I've been tying it the way Devon Olsen of Tactical Fly Fishers does. He hooks the fly point into his finger to hold it. I like swinging it around much better. But of course, he's a better man than I am.

Really great video! Do you take requests? I went on an ESN camp with you guys last year, and you had mentioned the "square egg" knot, as a means of tying a euro leader to the fly line. Any chance you'd be willing to show that one off? Keep up the great ESN videos!

Great video and very clear instructions. The problem I'm having is that when I try to tie on a small unweighted nymph or dry fly the twirling-the-fly around-the-loop step doesn't work because there isn't enough weight to counteract the stiffness of the mono or fluoro. Any ideas or suggestions? Thanks!

The dry fly is a bit tougher. I find it best to use my finger to twist the fly around the leader.

@@DeschutesAnglerFly Thanks for the response! I experimented with your suggestion and the point of the hook kept sticking my finger. In looking for further information I searched for "16-20 knot" on UA-cam and found a video on how to tie the Pitzen (16-20) knot from RIO Products a few hits down the list from yours. I'll certainly use your method for any fly with sufficient weight because it's really fast, but for small nymphs and dries I find their method to be easier for me personally because the fly stays in one place. Again, thanks for posting the video and for taking the time to respond to my comment.

I use a nail-knot to attach all my flys, which is also a slip knot, but will work for any size or weight of fly. There are lots of nail-knot tools out there (such as Tie-Fast) that enable this method to be done in seconds, and you get all the advantages of the 16/20.

This knot is amazing. I've caught 25 lb. salmon on 8# leader. No problem.
