I was 15.. still think trying to make Dawkins the first option in game 6 - because Kareem was out , played right into the Lakers hands.. Dr J tried to take over that game for the Sixers and did for a couple of spurts.. what many don’t realize was, Dr J was already having to ‘pace’ himself because of knee injuries already at this stage of his career. If the NBA could have seen the Prime Julius Erving..
Didn;t know Dave Cowens played until 1980. Classic stuff. Celtics fan here. Philly was a pain in our asses for a bit, but DR J was so excitng to watch!!
such a fun look back at the transitioning celts--cowens and maravich were on their way out after HoF careers, McHale and the Chief would be arriving in the offseason, and the NBA was about to be FIRE.
Celtics were horrible at SG, what a glaring weakness, on offense and defense. Bird had a bad shooting night, but played really well otherwise: lots of passes, rebounds, hustle and help D. Cowens carried the Celts most of the night, but dang, he got deleted hard by Dawkins on that dunk attempt off the sweet Bird pass! What a fun game to watch, I love the early 80s style of play.
I never knew Pete Maravich played with Larry Bird. Not a big Celtic fan. Bird had a lousy game- 😂 He was trash... 17% from the field 8pts. 😂 He even scored a point for the sixers in the 4th quarter!. Bobby Jones was impressive. Big, lanky, physical, wirery guy who could shot well too. I was hoping Pistol Pete would have a good game, but his knees weren't the same. The Doc didn't do crap in this game either. Still fun to watch.
This game was rough for both teams. The Celtics looked really slow.. the next couple of seasons they beefed up their front line.. Rick Robey. Robert Parish. The 82 & 83 playoffs between the Celtics and sixers were the ones to watch! Battles!! Bobby Jones could be the most underrated player ever Pistol was toast by this stage of his career.. his knees were shot. DJ may have been the best player Bird ever played with, but M.L. Carr was Bird's favorite teammate, always ready to play when called on & always a huge effort! Towel waving was NOT his greatest contribution to 2 Championship trophies!
these Sixers teams are truly unbelievable..the guards and coaching stuff can't set up a play for Dr J unless he is in the Power Forward position and they end up taking wild shots from left and right..i have seen this 100 hundred times over and over..the man is running around for the first 10 min of the game with zero touches on the ball!
Different era, the game was slower with more ball movement in 1980. The ball was pushed inside more to the bigs, the three point stripe didn't exist, and man to man defense was mandatory.
@@keithbeck2300 The 3 point stripe was there since 1979, but I understand the point. Most players in that era started their careers without it. And yes, that man-to-man defense meant that someone was in your face when a shot was taken. If I'm not mistaken, zone defenses were not allowed in the NBA at this time; otherwise there would be an illegal defense called. Uncontested shots were very rare. The players seemed more conditioned as well, running up the court and getting back on D after a shot, not like the lolly-gagging and jogging going on now.
@@generatorx Thanks for the correction, I thought the three point stripe was introduced in 1981. You're right, zone was not allowed and it was a technical foul if a player was caught playing zone.
It must have been pretty challenging for Bird to defend Doctor J and lead the team is rebounds and then be expected to carry the team on offense. If they had McHale a year earlier they would won this series
No McHale, no Parrish, no Dennis Johnson, no Danny Ainge in 1980. Bird took a team that won 29 games the previous year.....to 61 wins in his rookie year in 1980....with Bird basically being the only difference between the 79 and 80 Celtics. Bird basically took a team of BUMS from the 1979 Celtics...and took them all the way to The Eastern Conference Finals in 1980.
@@paullentz1972 the 80 Celtics in addition to adding Bird had other significant changes, including having a better coach in 80 than the two they had in 79, tiny Archibald averaged 11 more minutes per game in 80 than 79, the Celtics also added Gerald Henderson in 1980 who gave you 6.2 ppg in 14.0 mpg, and Cedric Maxwell matured into more of a team player going into his 3rd season. Those weren’t the only significant changes, as the 80 Celtics added M.L Carr, who the year before averaged 18.7 ppg with the Pistons.
