As well as being filmed in Australia, "No Escape" was known in Australia as *"Escape from Absolom"* , which I think is a much better title because it sounds more specific and less generic. The island is called Absolom after all. It was a truly first rate movie that was unfairly overlooked. And it was also produced by Gale Ann Hurd, famous for producing the Terminator films, Aliens, The Abyss etc (she was also married to James Cameron during those years and they worked as a team on all those films), and I clearly remember being very keen for Escape from Absolom when the trailers were airing on TV here in Australian in 1993, because they mentioned *"From the Producer of Terminator 2 and Aliens"*

Glad to see Fire In The Sky on the list. Now I do have to point out that the movie’s depiction of what happened in the alien ship was very different from Travis Walton’s account. He said that when he first encountered the aliens, he warded them off with some object he picked up from a table. And then, he encountered these human-like beings that overpowered him, & rendered him unconscious with some sort of breathing mask. The real Travis Walton said that Paramount Pictures made those changes, because they felt his actual story was “too boring” for a full length movie.
"too boring for a full-length movie" maybe those producers should have gone with their first instinct because they were right this movie is insanely boring.
Fun fact, Soldier was intended to be set in the same universe as Bladerunner (Tannhauser Gate is mentioned in Todd's military career as an Easter Egg).
Soldier, Wing Commander, and Tank Girl of some of my favorite childhood sci fi movies. Fortress and Robot Jox are up there as well. Gotta check out Moon 44 now, though.
Wing Commander had a scene where they were using sonar for detection. There is just a tiny problem, there is no sound in space. I remember face-palming pretty hard that time.
Wing Commander is not the masterpiece this video claims it is, and I swear they only hired Jürgen Prochnow to be the commander so he could recreate that sonar scene from Das Boot.
Soldier was just amazing. Kurt Russel put down one of the best performances of all time.; I was so deeply shaken when he answers a question "what's it like?" with "Fear, Fear and discipline" .. her : "Now?" him "Always!"

Fire in the Sky is a masterpiece.
I've camped the night in the same little valley where he claims he was taken. Its very dark out there.
@@TheDealMaster Fire in the sky is boring, unwatchable garbage
"too boring for a full-length movie"
maybe those producers should have gone with their first instinct because they were right this movie is insanely boring.
Soldier with Kurt Russel is one of my favorites.
Fun fact, Soldier was intended to be set in the same universe as Bladerunner (Tannhauser Gate is mentioned in Todd's military career as an Easter Egg).
Soldier is one of my all time favorite movies. It looks great and has a solid story
I also agree that Kurt Russell has always been underrated.
Soldier, Wing Commander, and Tank Girl of some of my favorite childhood sci fi movies. Fortress and Robot Jox are up there as well. Gotta check out Moon 44 now, though.
I'm surprised "Class of 1999" didn't make the cut.
That would have been great.
Wow!! I got to this gem after panning this videos! Glad I did, it's not very know in my country.
Same here. One of my favorite films
would have had that instead of Tank Girl. It's soo much better.
Wing Commander had a scene where they were using sonar for detection. There is just a tiny problem, there is no sound in space. I remember face-palming pretty hard that time.
Yeah they tried to make that scene like submarine hide-and-seek. I thought the movie was awful.
Wing Commander is not the masterpiece this video claims it is, and I swear they only hired Jürgen Prochnow to be the commander so he could recreate that sonar scene from Das Boot.
@@TheJosep70 You thought it was merely awful. I lost 5 points off my IQ from seeing it!
@@kpobuibo
Most people watched it because it had the first trailer for Star Wars ep. 1
Not SONAR but LIDAR, like RADAR but using lazers, more accurate over short distances than Radar.
HTH
Robot Jox makes me wish for a Mechwarrior live-action movie
Robot Jox looks really good considering they used zero CGI for the giant robots.
Duuuuude!!!
Been looking for a copy of mechwarrior or something similar to it. Used to love that game, but my disk has dissapeared.
U need to check out GunHed. Its a much better movie than robot jox.
I cannot believe Robot Jox has not been remade especially with movies like Pacific Rim borrowing so much from it!
Soldier was just amazing. Kurt Russel put down one of the best performances of all time.; I was so deeply shaken when he answers a question "what's it like?" with "Fear, Fear and discipline" .. her : "Now?" him "Always!"
I love these retro film reviews. As a man of a certain age, I remember watching these 20 plus years ago... and not since. Damn you Marvelous videos for making me go on Amazon and purchasing them! Which I often do when I drink whiskey! :) I once woke up the next morning after consuming said beverage and was horrified to find out that I had spent £80 on Amazon for retro movies! :) So glad I did :) Keep up the good work. Brilliant reviews and 100% agree with your assessment.
I feel old now, since I saw all these movies when they first came out...
Lol same
Ditto. Loved Soldier and Screamers in the theater as well as Fifth Element. So glad I got to see them in a theater.
No Escape I almost forgot about that movie, absolutely amazing movie I love it
I love so many of these. Most of these would better than a lot of stuff being done today.
I've had Soldier on my faves list for years. It's watchable over and over again. Definitely one of the good ones.
This could be a list of my favourite sci-fi movies of all time. Out of all of the them I'd only not seen Moon 44 and Tank Girl has to be my all time favourite movie.
As an Iraq Veteran and A Sgt as well it really shows what being torn down and remolded in to a fighting machine, I liked the end when Sgt Todd was braking down and showing emotion and started caring. that's what happens when one is so wired for so long.
" 'Soldier' is considered to be a "spin-off sidequel"-spiritual successor to Blade Runner, seeing both films as existing in a shared fictional universe. "
Right in the nostalgia. I grew up watching those movies.
Soldier is definitely underrated! One of my favorite action flicks of all time!
I agree with the many who feel that "Soldier" is a seriously underrated and under appreciated film. Its also a chilling film in many ways regarding what any Country or World could do regarding its Soldiers.
This channel keeps digging out gems! Looking at streaming services only makes you miss many of these older movies!
Love me some Dennis Hooper.
Haha...had me yelling at the sceen when i heard it.
Right?
Hardware also has a brief cameo from GWAR and music from Iggy Pop, Motörhead, Public Image Ltd. and Ministry.
No way is ministry in that movie. It fits but I haven't seen it in 20 years haha rewatched ai the other day and id forgotten Al and the lads were it that as well
Carl McCoy from Fields of the Nephilim as well: "Where's the little man?" ;)
90's sci-fi was my secret passion, and all but the last movie featured in this list I watched countless times.
Space Truckers' bio-mechs were fantastic, and some great humor. Tank Girl gave me a headache. No Escape, 10 out of 10.
Lori Petty was so Annoying !!!
The movie could had been good with a different Actress
I worked on Hardware. I did all the CG graphics using an Amiga 😁
Seriously? lol With 3.5?
@@kingpickle3712 You mean floppies? Then yep of course. It was an Amiga 1000 so pro stuff 😉 Deluxe Paint 3 and Sculpt4d. Amazing how far we've come
@@EDcase1 Yeah, the floppies. I can't remember when but they had the tape drives for those as well and they upgraded from floppy to a hard case drive. Good times, lol.
You did an amazing job. I actually saw it theatrically and thought everything looked great.
@@michaelmayo Wow, thanks very much. I always think I could have done better 🤔
Nemesis is another hidden gem!
Nemesis was the best of any of the Pyun films. One of my favorites. I paid $45 for the DVD and it was tough to find.
I love nemesis for being quality rubbish i got it from a pound shop back in the early 2000s. Back then a real big studio movie would cost about £15 on dvd buts some £1 shops would have a whole stack of dvds. I bought loads enjoying how terrible these movies were. Nemesis and cold harvest turned into guilty pleasures. Terrible movies on most scales but absolutely giddyly over the top joys otherwise
I loved Soldier. Still one of my favorite Kurt Russel movies. Highly underrated!
My favorite Kurt Russel movie is Vanilla Sky. Have you seent it? He is BRILLIANT in it.
@@JPerry-jw9ik As a matter of fact, Yes! Great movie also. (but more of a Tom Cruise movie)
@@DefiantAML That was my first DVD. I was so alone in college that I left it in the player on the title menu. It kept me from going insane...
I've been trying to figure out what movie I'd seen years ago as a child on HBO for my entire life, it was fortress. Great job marvelous!
I never was into sci-fi much as a kid, I'm 61 and for whatever reason I love sci-fi now. ? Great voice and emcee of this video , I actually wrote down with a pen, each movie and year , I'll watch all of them. Thank you and please make more of these previews, it's awesome or in my day we'd say it's cherry or boss. lol
and still no Death Machine - what have you guys got against Brad Dourif? ;)
Good movie :)
Yeah!
Death Machine is better than all those movies combined
Battle beyond the stars 1980 is one of my favorite sci-fi movie
"Soldier" is actually part of the "Bladerunner" universe, for you who did not know this already, the script is written by one of the two writers of the "Bladerunner"-script, David Webb Peoples.
No its not
@@BBAERSTANCE1 It is, Just check either movies wikipedia-page, with citations. On what grounds do you consider my statement false?
@@perholmstrom7050 Nope, noooo it isnt
@@BBAERSTANCE1 You present a compelling argument, but I am still not willing to accept it. Let's agree that we disagree on this subject.
@@BBAERSTANCE1 Todd fought in the battle of Tannhauser Gate.
Soldier is definitely underappreciated.
!!GREAT NARRATING MY FRIEND!! You made it fun to watch.
If you love post apocalyptic sci-fi, you must hunt down and watch "Blood of Heroes".
Amazing performance by Rutger Hauer.
It was also called "Salute of the Jugger".
I love that movie.
I watched it once on HBO as a kid but didn't know what it was called or who the actors were. It wasn't until my late 20s that I rediscovered it. It was quite the treat and the movie was just as good as I remembered.
My dad recorded it off HBO and would watch it together every once in awhile.
Great one, but missing some movies from this list like: Stargate (1994), Event Horizon (1997), Starship Troopers (1997), The Guyver (1991), Guyver: Dark Hero (1994), A.P.E.X. (1994)
Stargate and Starship troopers are not "hidden" gems. Stargate, in particular, spawned what, 2 successful tv series?
Soldier is a great movie, I enjoy it a lot every time is on TV.
And it is spin-off of one of the greatest movies in history, Blade Runner :-)
A fantastic jump back for me, took me back to my youth. I think i have watch most of them with the exception of Virus. Great work guys
As a combat Iraq Veteran I can relate to Sgt Todd when you've been in the shit after awhile you get numb to it at the part when you see a tear go down his face I teared up, when I got home for awhile I kept thinking I had to be on guard and my wife saw it she said it's ok you're home I lost it. great movie Russell was perfect.
Deep Rising is another fun one (it's currently on Disney Star channel in the UK). One from the 80's - Runaway with Tom Selleck (I saw it at the cinema lol).
How do you mispronounce the great Dennis Hopper's name? I constantly hear mispronounciations on this channel. You think they would rehearse the video in front of someone so they can tell them they're mispronouncing words.
Oh good I'm not losing my mind and alone in my bafflement.
Dennis...Hooper? I...can't.
May unsub as I like a list...but the thirst with some of these videos is creepy (top 10 succubus/10 dangerous but beautiful werewolves of all time/top tentacle horror?) and rookie errors like this when trying to be informational is absurd.
So perverted creepy and sometimes even inaccurate.
Yeah...I'm Ok thanks. Plenty of lists made by people less thirsty who get names of famous people correct.
He seems to struggle saying apocalyptic too and the Shatner-esque pausing is a bit annoying.
They don't care. They're just churning these out with the least amount of work possible. Just don't subscribe or watch the adds.
He mispronounce Terran as well
Also called it "Robot Jock" when the proper pronunciation is "Jocks" (Jox). They're robot jockeys.
have seen hardware, tank girl and soldier. love them!
I have an unusual suggestion for you- try an extremely obscure film called "Gunhed"
I've seen everything here except Robot Jox. Space Truckers is really uneven (Debi Mazar's consistently good, but there were so many problems making it), but the rest are all consistently good viewing.
Thanks for recalling these forgotten gems. I had watched these in theatre...good old memories..virus made my jawdrop.😮
By far, my favs in this list is Soldier and Fire in the Sky. Those movies have stuck with me for half my life now
My top 3 missing from this list, Death Machine, Nemesis and Solar Crisis.
Nemesis was actually in theaters by me for a week, but since all I knew about it was the poster, I couldn't go see it. Depressing, cause I love that movie. Too bad all the sequels are in name only, and not even starring Oliver Grunier.
Which Nemesis? I've seen a number of movies with that name
@@TexasDog3 The 1993 one from Albert Pyun.
@@JnEricsonx Thank you.
