Martha Davis says: I got a call from Giorgio… “Hey Martha, I would like you to sing on this song” and he sent over a cassette of “Take My Breath Away.” I don’t consider myself very A&R-ish but when I heard it I said, “damn, that’s a hit!” I went in and sang the song, but then, Terri ended up doing it and having it featured in Top Gun. There’s a big part of me that is glad that I didn’t do it because I’m a writer and I think I would have been known more for that song than any other. Terri Nunn says: It was a wonderful experience. Giorgio Moroder who wrote it and was producing "No More Words" with us at the time. We were at the right place at the right time. We weren't big. We hadn't had a hit yet. We had "Sex (I'm A...)" as an underground dance hit and "The Metro" was another underground hit. It wasn't played by Top 40 radio. When Giorgio started working with us people didn't know us and this was a big movie for Paramount. We just happened to be there. They tried other singers on it that were way bigger than me and the producers didn't like them so they asked me.
One of the most beautiful and emotional songs ever................................................just discovered this version. Awesome. There is a Motel somewhere in Berlin.
I was watching a Top Gun documentary and I learned something I was unaware of because they mentioned it was either going to be Terri Nunn or Martha Davis to sing this song for the film and obviously Nunn/Berlin got it but I wanted to hear Martha's version and full disclosure I had low expectations for what it would sound like but I have to say now that I've heard it I'm not sure which version I would like more if it would have been reversed and Martha's was the one I was familiar with and Berlin's was the alternate. Must give Martha her due she really put over this song. Beautiful rendition. Very gifted vocalist.
I just read this song was offered to The Motels first. I'm not such a big fan of the lyrics or melody, but the synth programming and all the key changes are exquisite, and apparently were intact well before Berlin recorded the final product. Very interesting.
Berlin didn't actually record it. The backing tracks were produced in studio by Moroder. This became a major point of contention between Terri Nunn and John Crawford who stated that "Take My Breath Away" was not their song nor their style of music.
It's a little slice of Ear-Heaven. Moroder really knew what he was doing with those keys and Martha could sing the ingredients on a box of cereal and sound magnificent. Thank you, thank you, thank you. :)
I had never heard this version before and I think it's beautiful. It's completely different from the version Berlin did. I like how this version has the "through the hourglass I saw you" part towards the beginning of the song, it's a unique twist. I would never compare Martha and Terri's vocals as they are two COMPLETELY different styles and both women have powerful and incredible voices and after hearing this, I like both versions. Thank you for sharing! Can't stand Jessica Simpson's cover of it though lol.

Usually much easier to build off a already written and designed arrangement and then upgrade it more often it failure that accepts s Berlin is an exception to the rule both versions stand out in different ways
Berlin didn't actually play the backing track... it was Moroder and Thompson in a studio. Yes, Berlin performed it in the likes of Terri Nunn, but the rest of the band had nothing to do with the original studio tracking of the song. John Crawford argued with Terri Nun over the fact that this song was not their music. "Once Giorgio Moroder wrote the musical backing to what would become "Take My Breath Away", lyricist Tom Whitlock wrote the lyrics driving home from the studio, and then spent a few hours at home polishing them. A demo of the song, sung by a background singer, impressed director Tony Scott and producers Jerry Bruckheimer and Don Simpson, who decided to film more romantic scenes between Tom Cruise and Kelly McGillis to feature the song.[3] The song was first offered to The Motels, who much later released their original demo, which is fairly similar to Berlin's released version, on their compilation album Anthologyland.[4] Columbia Records suggested some of their signed artists, but eventually Moroder thought of the band Berlin, whose hit song "No More Words" he had produced. Whitlock made a few lyrical changes before Terri Nunn recorded the vocals.[3] Moroder has said that of all the hits he has had in his career, he is most proud of this song." -- Wiki for "Take My Breath Away. (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Take_My_Breath_Away)
This is technically the original. Martha had already recorded this before it was offered to Berlin for the Top Gun soundtrack. In essence this is a cover.
@@johntonelli5930 An actual studio back-up singer made the demo track which was presented to Martha and eventually Terri whose performance was ultimately chosen. I like them both I think they both did a great job.. I'm I lean more towards the motels towards the motels because I like their music a little bit more than I do Berlin.
I played this demo synced up with the Top Gun movie and it works just as well. Berlin's there's just a little more heat in Terrie Nunn's version. Martha Davis's voice is more smoky and sensual.
The Motels / Martha Davis should've sang this because the song helped to destroy Berlin because they weren't known for ballads among their fans and the band (John Crawford, David Diamond) didn't want this musical direction and weren't too happy with Giorgio Moroder producing under their record label's insistence. Sure it put Berlin on the map but it also helped be a nail in the coffin and one of the reasons for their original breakup. I'm glad David and John are back in Berlin. As for The Motels, they had ballad success with Only The Lonely and even Take The L so to me, this song would've fit them better. As for Berlin, their albums Pleasure Victim and Love Life are Perfection with no Take My Breath Away ballad types.
getting patsy cline vibes from martha's take on this - also this one has more dynamics - would have been amazing if the producer of the berlin version had produced this also
Man this is a tough one... Terri or Martha? It's as close to a tie as you can get. Having heard Berlin's version so many times, I may have to go with that one, but Martha could have had the movie number; and THAT'S the one we would all know.
I agree. Lots of people saying that this is a totally different version, but I don't hear a big difference. Both similar and great deliveries, it comes down to an indescribable x-factor vibe.
The writer of the song, get Martha's version first... because this demo was recorded first... and son as he hearded it... he rejected it... and offered the song to Berlin. The rest is history... In 1986 Berlin wins a Gloden Globe Award and an Oscars with this song for the Best Soundtrack Motion Picture of the Year... and Berlin's version is #20 of the Top 100 chart of the 80's... which is espectacular if you considerate that the 80's is a decade of the most impressive voices and songs of the history of music...
Yes... this was the first offering of this song. But when the writer hearded it, he rejected immediately... and offers the song to Berlin... because he said this version is too slow and whithout no feelings...
I want to like this version better because I absolutely love Martha Davis, but even though it's enjoyable it's just not as good. Very glad that you posted it though.
Well Terri Nunn missed out on Princess Leia, but got this huge money song that became her signature instead of Martha Davis. Funny how things work out.
Writer of the song received this one first, because this one was the first one recorded and he rejected immediately... then he offers the song to Berlin... the rest is history... In 1986 Berlín won a Golden Globe Award and an Oscars with this song... and Berlin is the #20 of the Top 100 of the 80's(don't forget the 80's have the most espectacular voices and songs of the history of music)...
Yes... that was the first offering of this song... but the writter rejected it... because he said it was too slow and whithout feelings... then he offer the song to Berlin...
This performance has the same cheesy synth bass and drum machine that were used in the Berlin hit. You'd expect a different band to play it differently. The song isn't bad, I just don't like the production.

No. And apparently my opinion is the same one that the writer of the song made when he hearded this one... he said is too slow and whithout no feeling... remember this demo was the first recorded of this song... then the writer offer it to Berlin... the rest is History... in 1986 Berlin won a Golden Glove Award and an Oscar with this song as the Best Soundtrack Motion Picture of the Year... and this song with Berlin is the #20 of the Top 100 of the 80's(remember the 80's is the most powerful decade in the history of music for the voices and songs made)... this one is good, but Berlin's one is a classic... that still being remember today...

I like them both I think they both did a great job.. I'm I lean more towards the motels towards the motels because I like their music a little bit more than I do Berlin.
💗💗💗
nice find in 2021
I played this demo synced up with the Top Gun movie and it works just as well. Berlin's there's just a little more heat in Terrie Nunn's version. Martha Davis's voice is more smoky and sensual.
I prefer Berlin version
The Motels / Martha Davis should've sang this because the song helped to destroy Berlin because they weren't known for ballads among their fans and the band (John Crawford, David Diamond) didn't want this musical direction and weren't too happy with Giorgio Moroder producing under their record label's insistence. Sure it put Berlin on the map but it also helped be a nail in the coffin and one of the reasons for their original breakup. I'm glad David and John are back in Berlin.
As for The Motels, they had ballad success with Only The Lonely and even Take The L so to me, this song would've fit them better.
As for Berlin, their albums Pleasure Victim and Love Life are Perfection with no Take My Breath Away ballad types.
getting patsy cline vibes from martha's take on this - also this one has more dynamics - would have been amazing if the producer of the berlin version had produced this also
This is too "notey" if that makes sense. Very mechanical. Terri Nunn adds more emotion and liberty with the melody
GIORGIO MADE CORRECT CHOOSE ABOUT BERLIN

Never knew that Martha did the Demo for this Song, but Berlin with Terry Nunn Singing got the nod.
This demo is before to Berlin's version.
Yes... this was the first offering of this song. But when the writer hearded it, he rejected immediately... and offers the song to Berlin... because he said this version is too slow and whithout no feelings...
Ah the alternative paths that were never followed. Martha, Martha, Martha - le sigh!
I want to like this version better because I absolutely love Martha Davis, but even though it's enjoyable it's just not as good. Very glad that you posted it though.
I just learned this version was the original version made for Top Gun but was turned down and given to Berlin. I do prefer the Berlin version.
Muy bueeeno
Was this recorded before Berlin’s version?
Rob H yes
Yes... that was the first offering of this song... but the writter rejected it... because he said it was too slow and whithout feelings... then he offer the song to Berlin...
😍😍🛫🛫🛫🛫🛫🛫🛫.
Thanx.
Best one....
This is cool!!!!
TERRI NUNN SING WITH HER SOUL !!! NOTHING COMPARE HER
The motels vamos pro oklahoma?kkkk
No way
😍👍🤩🤪😘😘🔴❓🧡🎹💜🤎
This performance has the same cheesy synth bass and drum machine that were used in the Berlin hit. You'd expect a different band to play it differently. The song isn't bad, I just don't like the production.
Terri Nunn is BETTER! No comparison.
Nope
@@donatoiacovino6968 yep.
This reminds me of Trisha Yearwood and LeAnn Rimes doing How do l live for Con Air theme.

Martha's is better...more sultry
I prefer Martha singing this
Agreed; Martha has a more feminine, submissive style
Martha's is better!
Yes
@@donatoiacovino6968 nope.
Mejoraste la versión por eso te doy my like, the motels forevers
