    dont you mean 16:10 aspect ratio? 17:9 would be wider than your average monitor (like a pro display xdr, with a 16:9 aspect ratio)

    • @TheEverydayDad

      @@TheEverydayDad Yes, it is. 16:9 is the standard aspect ratio display, and I don't think many people use monitors vertically. All macbooks use a 16:10 aspect ratio, and that is taller than an average monitor.

      2 months is not enough. I have a dell XPS 15 9570.. I tend to go Mac, dell, Mac, dell. Lured by the specs and price. But every time I regret it. My XPS is 2 years old, already had it replaced under warranty, now runs like garbage, had to get the battery replaced entirely, all the bios and updates have problems. Personally - all Dells I’ve had turn into a headache after about 3-6 months. I only used it for Adobe work and browser.

    I'm currently loving my new XPS 15! Thankfully, I ordered it after the whole track-pad issue. I'm two weeks in and I'm loving it! The fans are quiet, thermals seem to hold up adequately, even with some gaming. For an incoming college student, I am confident that this computer will get me through my four years as a computer science major easily! My machine is configured with the 6-core I7, 4-k touchscreen, 1650 TI, 16 GB of ram, and 1 TB SSD, and Windows 10 pro. Just a pro tip, I got this custom configuration on Amazon, where I think you will get a better configuration for your money, plus better deals on warranties! Overall, I am a fan; take it from me!
    P.S.
    Run dell updater after first boot for BIOS updates. It seemed to boost the quality of the speaker and the battery power-saving options!

      Don’t forget to turn off Bitlocker encryption when doing a bios flash upgrade. The bios recovery file is stored on the hard drive. In the event of a bad flash, the bios cannot recover itself if the hard drive is encrypted, thus making the file unreadable.

    I ordered my 9500 in 8/2020. The trackpad clicks work intermittently. It's very frustrating to use the laptop with the touchpad. I called Dell and they sent a repair technician to my house. The new palm rest/keyboard/trackpad also has the wireless antenna. The cable for the antenna was defective. The technician tried for over an hour to get the cable to work, losing his temper and throwing his tools in my livingroom. The technician also said that Dell doesn't know how to design a laptop. He also got mad when he had an extra part he didn't remember where it went back to. He couldn't get the antenna cable back on but did something with a screw to hold it next to it and told me he didn't have all night to sit here and try to fix it. After the machine was "finished" it still had the same click problem. I called Dell and the first two customer service reps hung up on me. I have been trying to speak to a manager for almost a week now to get a replacement unit sent. I'm telling you, I will never buy another Dell product as long as I live. I should have bought a MBP.

My preference was for the matte screen, my hope was that it wouldn't run as hot as the 4k variant.

    I'm typing this comment on a XPS 15 9500 right now. I've had my machine for about a month, and I have three major issues with it. 1) I have some screen bleeding around the edges of the screen. 2) Whenever my computer wakes up after sleeping, the WiFi doesn't connect properly, and I need to turn off and turn on the WiFi for it to work. 3) This is a big one - whenever I pick up my laptop with one hand, so I have my thumb on top and four fingers beneath the laptop, the pressure of my fingers pressing up into the computer seems to somehow trigger the track pad clicking mechanisms. So if I am watching a UA-cam video full screen, that would pause and play the video I am watching. This is extremely strange and I definitely don't think this is an intentional feature built in.

    I have this for work and it is a nice machine. It is very comfortable to type on. I do some heavy CAD work. The fans are working overtime and it gets pretty hot when I’m doing that but it handles running solidworks fine. Battery life isn’t great though when you are doing intensive tasks like CAD, and I wouldn’t call it super impressive in normal daily use. Fit and finish are excellent, and are holding up well. Overall though, it’s a great machine, and it’s as close of a MacBook experience as I have seen without being a MacBook.

    I have been using this laptop for about a month now (coming from an almost 10 year old MacBook Air) and I agree with all you said, it is a really strong and solid machine. Since you already summed up the positives let me tell you about my negatives as you couldn't find many;
    -The camera quality is my biggest negative. It is simply describable as poor. If like me, you need this laptop for work as well as private meaning lots of Zoom calls, I would recommend an external webcam. The stock cam is very pixelated and completely washes out colors and doesn't handle light very well.
    -At times the laptop gets too hot. I say too hot because it is not comfortable to have on my lap anymore. It may still be acceptable and it doesn't feel like it's going to overheat or anything. The fans start going like crazy and after a few minutes of pretty intens ''blowing'' it cools down.
    -The carbon fiber material looks and feels very nice but is super sensitive for fingerprints and greasy stains etc. As I am working with this laptop throughout the day there will be moments when I eat/drink when using is but please be careful where you put your finger after you've eaten a sandwich, these greasy smutches are hard to clean.
    -The space/crease between the screen and the body when the laptop is open is quite big and gathers dust/dirt very fast. I find myself cleaning it out with a q-tip every couple of days.
    So just some minor things. Overall I am super impressed with this machine. Perhaps coming from a 10 year old device it doesn't take that much to impress me but still. I have the 10th generation i7 32gb ram 1TB internal memory, no touch screen. I bought the 2020 model because it was discounted a lot on Dell's website and it fitted right within the budget my employer gives me for a laptop which is €2k.

Every time I put a little bit of pressure beside the trackpad (ex. when I'm typing an essay) the trackpad automatically clicks. I investigated it further to make sure I'm not just accidentally touching the trackpad by pressing all around my trackpad without actually touching it and it automatically clicks in the top right and top left sides around the trackpad almost every time. I've had bad experiences with Dell XPS 15s. I've had two so far, the 15Z and 15 9530. Both have had significant problems a few years in due (IMO) to poor manufacturing. For example, both had significant problems with extreme overheating and fan noise. The overheating on my 9530 was bad enough that it damaged the screen (now it has white spots). It also has the well acknowledged mouse wobble.
    Dell support was awful for me as well. I called them about these issues (after my warranty was over) and they said that I would have to pay to *talk* to a customer support representative. Not to have it fixed, but to talk to someone about manufacturing flaws post-warranty.
    I loved my Dells for the first few years I had them, but they did not age well. I'm switching to the Mac Pro 16". It surprises me to see such an endorsement of one of their products. I think Just Josh got it right in his review. It's a great computer but with too many manufacturing problems.

    Unfortunately I just got my XPS 15 9500 on 17 July and it still has trackpad issues. Dell support was underwhelming. They did not want to send someone to verify the issue as they did not have a spare replacement part (trackpad) and they told me that they did not know when the spare trackpad would come. I mean if they are Dell and they don’t know, who knows? Later on they updated me that it might take a month or more before someone comes to replace the trackpad onsite. To replace the whole laptop would also take a month or more. I would have loved the Dell XPS 15 if it were not for the bad trackpad issue and a horrible experience when contacting Dell. Now I have to pay for the return shipment and hope they give me a refund. Other brands have much better service to their customers, so unless you’re reviewing Dell on UA-cam, don’t expect Dell to give that “I am here to try and resolve your issue.”

    The WiFi / Network performance is impacted by the Killer Software Suite. This has been a known issue for Dell systems using the Killer Network cards and the installed Killer Suite for some time. The XPS 9500 and 9700 are no different. When comparing WiFi / Network performance against other systems the Dells are usually 300 to 400% slower! If you uninstall the Killer software and use the Killer remover software found on the Killer Site @t and then download and install only the Drivers your WiFi / Network performance will improve considerably!

    Hello! How is the text and glare on the FHD Display? Since most people will be using this for a workhorse for me it needs a nice crisp text and not a lot of eye strain with glare. Would the UHD display have better text and less glare? Appreciate your opinion as it will most likely make my buy decision for Black Friday. THANKS!!!

    Did you end up sorting out or replacing the lack of screw included with the SSD? I didn't want to purchase a tool kit and opted to take it in to my local bestbuy geek squad tech center. They apparently didn't have any nvme2 ssd mounting screws (I didn't know these were a thing) and I asked them to just use any screw that worked. Is this something that should be fixed or is it a non-issue from your experience?

    Have had it for 3 days and I can say I have had no track pad issues, the speakers are great, the display is magnificent, if you're on the fence I say get it without fear. Now my one gripe is the battery life, its average but it definitely gives you 6 hours which isn't a deal breaker imo. Also there's a nice update when you startup which improves the speaker, this laptop is super responsive and feels extremely premium.

    Hmm, personally I think usb-c is much better than hdmi. My personal favorite setup is regular usb on right, and two usb-c on left for charging and other stuff. Thing is that usb-c can function as hdmi so you just need to get hdmi to usb cable or small converter that stays on the monitor cable. There's no reason to pick hdmi over usb-c as usb with thunderbolt can serve so many more roles.

    I really really miss the display. Although I had a faulty trackpad on my XPS 15 that was returned, I still miss the display to this day. My only dislike really was the thermals (mine was with dGPU) and how warm it gets even under light productivity. It's a little worse under load. But hopefully we see Dell improving on this device next year, I think they got some things right but some others could be improved.

    Couple of observations as someone with one XPS13 (9300) and two XPS15s (9500) in the house under daily use:
    1) why does the XPS15’s keyboard deck have such a stupidly sharp edge? The edge is smoothly radiused on the very similarly designed XPS13.
    2) both XPS15 4K touchscreens have moderately noticeable uneven brightness across the whole panel. The brightest spot is just above centre and slightly to left of midline. Upper half is brighter than lower half. Dimmest area is the lower right quarter which seems relatively starved of light. Clearly seen with a white or light grey background.
    Still excellent laptops overall, just wish these small issues had been noticed and the design tweaked to remove them prior to mass production.

    • @jerome_morrow
      @jerome_morrow 4 роки тому

      There are no thermal issues on mine. However, my XPS13 is used predominantly for Office based applications in the administrative aspect of my work as a surgeon. So Outlook, Word & Excel are always in use along with Firefox that typically has around 15 open tabs. The fans rarely spin up and the underside feels no warmer than one would expect from any laptop in 2020. Your mileage might vary if you use it for more CPU intensive tasks.
      There are no trackpad issues on the XPS13 which has one of excellent size, feel and functionality. The loose trackpad issue was on the XPS15 and XPS17 that have even bigger trackpads (hence greater flex and likelihood of loose mounting), but this has now been rectified by Dell as of July 2020. Both my XPS15s have solidly mounted trackpads.
      The XPS13 is my main daily driver that goes into my workbag and accompanies me everywhere. The 16:10 aspect ratio is a dream and ideal for a 13.3 inch screen where 16:9 is awfully cramped. Fabulous ultrabook indeed! Buy one; you won’t regret it!

    On my third unit, really love the look and feel but I will send this back (although I agree its a little too sharp on edges, it's actually uncomfortable), had two with touchpad wobble, now on the third unit my backspace key came loose and pops off so they reckon they have to change the palm rest along with touchpad just to replace the keyboard, it just sounds ridiculous, and the trackpad on this one is actually decent so do I want to risk it?? No way I will return all over again smh... I wouldn't by a brand new car from a showroom to then have to have it fixed by a mechanic.

    @The Everyday Dad Thx for the vid. Rocking the 9300 here. Curious, you said “no new firmwares have been released”. I had issues with mine out of the box where it would blue screen and fans would go wide open after like 10 minutes of charging. Firmwared it and the problem seems to be resolved. I’m relatively new to Dell for personal use and my question is, with all the Dell updating software, will it find new firmware releases by itself? Or is that something I will have to go hunting for every so often. Thx again. PS: the firmware I did was manual and took three tries before it took.
