  • Title: Layla
    Artist: Derek And The Dominos
Album: Layla And Other Assorted Love Songs
    Year: 1970
I do not claim ownership to this song.
    Lyrics:
What'll you do when you get lonely
And nobody's waiting by your side?
You've been running and hiding much too long.
You know it's just your foolish pride.
Layla, you've got me on my knees.
    Layla, I'm begging, darling please.
Layla, darling won't you ease my worried mind.
I tried to give you consolation
When your old man had let you down.
Like a fool, I fell in love with you,
Turned my whole world upside down.
    Chorus
Let's make the best of the situation
    Before I finally go insane.
Please don't say we'll never find a way
And tell me all my love's in vain.
    Chorus
    Chorus

1970. I (27) was madly in love with a 21-year-old, woman who went on to do modeling. A real beauty. But ya know, that was only a part of it. She had this amazing sexy, fluid tenor voice and a laugh that would melt my heart. SHE ABSOLUTELY LOVED THIS SONG. I bought the cassette and every time we hit the road, top-down on a Buick Grand Sport, we'd sing, pound on the dash, swinging and swaying....Sadly, I drove her to modeling school in Miami 2 years later and we never saw one another again. This song still after all these years tugs at my heartstrings.

    Happy Birthday Eric.....
Funny story about this song. A couple of years ago, I had heard the "Classic Rock" station play this song on about 3 different occasions and cut in before the song was over. I HAD to e-mail them and tell them, you can't call yourself a "Classic Rock" station if you are going to do that! The song is NOT over until Duane does the "little bird" at the end! About 2-3 days after my e-mail I heard the song again on the station and they waited until it was over and the DJ said....."Gotta wait for the bird, it's not over until then". I guess I got through to them! :)

At 3:10 ""Jimmy was cutting every link between himself and the robbery but it wasn't about me. I gave Jimmy the tip and he gave me some Christmas money. From then on I kept my mouth shut. I knew Jimmy, he had the cash. It was his. I know he kicked some money upstairs to Paulie, but that was it. It made him sick to have to turn money over to the guys who stole it, he’d rather whack them. Anyway, what did I care? I wasn’t asking for anything and besides Jimmy was making nice money through my Pittsburgh connections. Still, for months after the robbery, they were finding bodies all over. When they found Carbone in the meat truck, he was frozen so stiff it took them two days to thaw him out for the autopsy, Still, I never saw Jimmy so happy. He was like a kid. We had money coming in through my Pittsburgh people and after a while even the Lufthansa thing began to calm down. But the thing that made Jimmy so happy that morning was that this was the day Tommy was being made, You know, we always called each other good fellas. Like you said to, uh, somebody, ‘You’re gonna like this guy. He’s all right. He’s a good fella. He’s one of us’. You understand? We were good fellas. Wiseguys. But Jimmy and I could never be made because we had Irish blood. It didn’t even matter that my mother was Sicilian. To become a member of a crew you’ve got to be one hundred per cent Italian so they can trace all your relatives back to the old country. See, it’s the highest honor they can give you. It means you belong to a family and crew. It means that nobody can fuck around with you. It also means you could fuck around with anybody just as long as they aren’t also a member. It’s like a license to steal. It’s a license to do anything. As far as Jimmy was concerned with Tommy being made, it was like we were all being made. We would now have one of our own as a member."

When the piano exit comes on in the second part of this song i can hear the voice of Henry Hill describing how Jimmy wanted all of the cash for himself. Classic. Thank you Ray for your great and memorable work. Rip.

Also, it's not really the end of the Grand Tour, but the end of the things like Conversation Street, road tests, and Eboladrome, apparently. Still it makes me very sad, something you're very familiar with now gone...
I only hope that the new format of the show for season 4 would be as good, if not better than where they left here at season 3.

    Happy Birthday Patti Boyd.
some of the juicy details from her tell-all book :
    • In 1970 Boyd was married to Harrison but became involved with Eric Clapton after hearing "Layla." "We met secretly at a flat in South Kensington. Eric had asked me to come because he wanted me to listen to a new number he had written," Boyd recalled. "He switched on the tape machine, turned up the volume and played me the most powerful, moving song I had ever heard. It was 'Layla.'"
    • Later that same night Boyd was caught out in the garden of manager Robert Stigwood's house. "[Harrison] kept asking, 'Where's Pattie? But no one seemed to know. He was about to leave when he spotted me in the garden with Eric," Boyd said. "George came over and demanded, 'What's going on?' To my horror, Eric said, 'I have to tell you, man, that I'm in love with your wife.' I wanted to die. George was furious. He turned to me and said: 'Well, are you going with him or coming with me?'" She went home with Harrison.
    • Clapton once showed up drunk at Harrison's home and engaged the Beatles' guitarist in a rock duel. "George handed him a guitar and an amp -- as an 18th-century gentleman might have handed his rival a sword -- and for two hours, without a word, they dueled," Boyd recalled. "At the end, nothing was said but the general feeling was that Eric had won. He hadn't allowed himself to get riled or go in for instrumental gymnastics as George had. Even when he was drunk, his guitar-playing was unbeatable."
