NDP's Singh proposes partnership between feds, educational institutions to fund student housing

  • Delivering a statement on Wednesday, NDP leader Jagmeet Singh stated that in his view, collaboration between the federal government and educational institutions is necessary to fund and construct affordable student housing.
He also pointed out that the housing market in Canada is one of the worst in the world and is designed to favour billionaires and investors instead of working people, families, and students in his opinion.
Singh added International students are not to blame in his view, but rather a lack of affordable housing options built by the consecutive Conservatives and the Liberal administrations over the last 18 years.

Don't mention the fact that Conservatives do not support increased immigration - and do not support climate action. This when climate change is ushering in the largest mass migration in human history with 200 million to 1 billion+ climate refugees on the move starting now.
This is why US Military Intelligence has identified climate change as a "threat multiplier - fuelling political instability, conflict and mass migration!"
Conservatives are a self fulfilling prophesy. They have no credible climate plan, and consider Canadian climate leadership to be meaningless. That makes conservatives totally unfit to lead!

that is one of the biggest factors in both Canada and the US. A stagnant building market relative to the increase in population. Cut the red tape. Cut the regulations. No taxes on new rental units for low to mid income people based on the market which they are built. A twenty five year tax break. You can't increase the population without increasing the property market without having prices sky rocket.

Jagmeet Singh has more ethics, morals, intelligence and humanity than the leader of the anti-worker party will ever have. Singh also has more real world experience than the leader of the anti-worker party, as a lawyer with his own law firm before entering politics in 2011 at the age of 30.
Pierre Poilievre has been a rabid right wing ideologue since the age of 14. His only real world experience outside the political realm before entering politics in 2005 at the age of 25 - was working for Telus doing corporate collections over the phone.
Canadians are well aware that Conservatives don't support unions and workers. The reality is - unions built the middle class. The decline of the middle class is in direct correlation to the decline of unions.
The last Conservative government, which Poilievre was a top cabinet minister in, was the most anti-union, anti-worker government in generations. They legislated fines against unions fighting for pay equity, made it harder for laid-off workers to access unemployment benefits, restricted union members’ right to strike, cut back on pension payments for retired workers and tried to discourage unionization.
Meanwhile, after successfully leveraging their position in this minority parliament and less than 2 years into their "Confidence & Supply Agreement" with the liberal Government - one of the many results Jagmeet Singh and the NDP have secured for Canadians is forcing the government for the first time ever - *to tie funding for incentives to business to jobs*. Full tax credit only when a company creates jobs with good wages - tied to union jobs, and apprenticeships.
I trust leaders who have real world experience outside politics, who are compassionate, and who deliver results for Canadians.
I don't trust leaders who have virtually zero real world experience, who are not compassionate, and who when in a position of power do things like employ classic Republican style voter suppression (the [Un]Fair Elections Act) which resulted in 172,000 Canadians not voting in the 2015 election. Conservatives learned this Republican style voter suppression technique (and other ways to mess with elections) from the likes of **Mike Roman** a Trump Whitehouse & Koch Industries operative who Conservatives (including former leader Andrew Scheer) have been in documented meetings with.
Mike Roman was subpoenaed by the Jan 6th Committee for his role in organizing the Trump campaign's fake elector scheme to negate the 2020 election results. He also had his phone seized by the Dept of Justice as part of the Select Committee's investigation into the Jan 6 attack on the US Capital. Now Roman is one of the 18 other defendants along with Trump, charged with felony racketeering (RICO) and numerous conspiracy charges in the 41-count indictment in Georgia.
Any political party or politician who seeks to disenfranchise voters of their most fundamental right in a democracy - their vote - is totally unfit to lead Canada or to be PM!

Universities bring in International students because they pay far higher tuition. But that means Canadian HS Graduates cannot get into Medicine, Engineering and Computer Sciences to remain here and build a better Canada.
In 2019 a total of 57 Medical School Graduates were unable to get residencies, that is after 10 years of Education, tens of thousands of dollars and thousands of hours of study they cannot take that last step.
Meanwhile students from overseas get their MD and return to their home country, while over 20% of Canadians cannot get a family Doctor.
      The whole system is screwy.

      - an historic healthcare advancement - a national dental care program.
      - doubling of the GST rebate two years in a row
      - a Canada Housing Benefit for low-income people who are spending over 30% of their income on rent
      - forced government to make 10 paid sick days the law of the land
      - forced government to make childcare dollars permanent
      - forced government to tie funding for incentives to business to jobs for the first time ever. Full tax credit only when a company creates jobs with good wages - tied to union jobs and apprenticeships.
      - forced a change to the definition of affordability making sure that federal dollars go to projects that actually deliver affordable homes
      - forced Competition Bureau to investigate food prices, who then made recommendations that the NDP is forcing government to put in place.
      - called in CEOs of big grocery stores to answer questions in committee exposing that their greed is driving up the cost of food - and proposing solutions.

@RedTeamBlueTeam You can blame the government for inflation. Schools have no say in that. But Colleges and Universities are 100% subject to being blamed for immigration because they advise the government on how many people to bring in. And they are also to blame for not building more housing. Your comment let's Colleges and Universities walk away with no blame.

@@powerguy1902 so your solution is to have the universities ask the government for more money? You said universities have the money to build but they don’t. I can tell you they don’t have money for that. They wouldn’t need so many foreign students if they had lots of cash. Getting more from taxpayers isn’t a solution. So here we have in total about 800,000 non permanent residents on student visas, add to that the 500,000 new immigrants annually that will be applying for permanent residence. The students numbers don’t go up. But the in the time it takes to get a degree 2 million new permanent residents will arrive. It’s not the students that are the problem.

Everybody needs housing- unless you have the money to buy a house every single Canadian is living on a precipice. I see institutions like Universities sitting on huge endowments, yet they have their hand out for Federal money.
If Singh wants my vote (and I'm halfway there, but still...) he'll be looking at ways to house low income Canadians on a "more permanent" and less tenuous way than we have it now.
If students want to come to Canada for school, it's up to the universities to charge them according to what it will cost to house them and educate them without having to go to the government at any level. If they cannot sustain a growing student population, that's on them, not us.

Then once caught up we talk about proper immigration targets. Jag don't care about the middle class and who flips the bill he is trying to buy stufent votes. Problem Jag is that students don't vote on average middle age and older do. So about time you cared about the middle class instead of some student who won't even vote anyway.
