Was looking for this too. Will take the weekend to try it out. With a few exception, at this point my RT has been sitting on a shelf for little over 5 years. Booted it up yesterday to do a system check before performing this operation. Wish me luck!
This channel is criminally unappreciated 😅! Another one of your videos helped me boot Arch on the TX9s with Armbian kernel. I'm working on switching to the mainline kernel from the 5.9.0-arm64. Thanks
Thanks for the comment. I really appreciate the positive feedback
That was fantastic! Very easy to follow.
Glad to hear it, thanks for the comment
Hi a friend of mine gave me one, he has 3 more, he does computer donations to kids who need help, and he asked me to see if there's anything I can do with it, and Linux was my first thought...
Happy to someone made a good video, I'll give this a try, thanks
Trying to do this but the link to your gitbook is showing Not Authorized so I cant access the jailbreak files
This is so random and cool! This was a fun watch! Thanks for the video!
this is the best video on installing raspberry pi os in surface rt. many thanks.
Appreciate the comment!
Amazing video with detailed instruction! I completed all the steps and was able to get Raspberry Pi OS on My Surface RT 1st Gen!
Thanks for the comment!
+1)
How stable/smooth/snappy does this run compared to Win8/8.1RT? Last time I tried going on Explorer to just watch UA-cam on my RT it took around 4-5 minutes before it finally played the video. The old system struggled tons with 3 simple instructions. Was hoping to be able to run Android as OS on the RT without R-PI as a middle layer but hell, today i'd take anything.
Good video.
Everything was clear, thanks a lot
Appreciate the comment
Ok got it working !!!!!! I expanded the file system and changed the nish and was able to save it and youtube does work thanks for the video it helped a lot.
Glad you got it working!
Thank you for taking the time to make very detailed video. Worked great and I added Octoprint with OctoDash for my 3d printer. Now I'm going to try to install in on the Surface 2.
no luck getting it to work on the surface 2. it stops at mapping tables. any help would be great. thank you

I really enjoy your videos. Greetings from Brazil!
Appreciate the comment and glad you're finding them useful!
1:33 hi, great tutorial and the linked text steps are brilliant. However just ti note for anyone else, pressing vol- plus power and releasing vol key immediately shutdown the tablet. I then had to press power again without vol key and it booted tk win boot manager. Odd behaviour (my surface pro 3 doesn't do this) but might save someone else the confusion and frustration i had for a while . Thanks again
Thanks for the comment. That is odd. Mine I had to power off, then hold vol- + power to boot into the boot menu. Glad you got it sorted out
Great job!! Can you make a video how to install android 7.1.2 on Surface RT Tablet please?
Ever thought to run homeassistant on that ?
I do not have such RT but would love to run my HA installation from that device if I would new it would run.
thanks for sharing

HI @i12bretro, nice to watch your videos. I need to install Golden Keys and Yahallo, but the Surface´s window´s bottom doesnt work , so i cant press enter. Ive also tried taking out the USB flashdrive and pluggin a keyboard but then the tablet coudlnt sart.
Help me to press enter please. Thank you in advance. Keep it goin, you rock.
I was wondering if you could help me out. I am running this on my surface rt. But my 2 usb wifi adapters alfa awus036ach and tp link 722n version 1) I cant seem to get them to work. I have some knowledge of linux. I have tried the instruction set for raspberry pi and some other instructions as well but none seem to work. Can you help or point me where I need to go. Thanks
Love this, but is there anyway to switch the function of the power button to sleep instead of power off?
A great guide and easy to follow, however I am having an issue. In the video you have "Boot" partition that you copied all the files. When I did mine I got "Bootfs" and won't boit from the nand. How can I fix this?
@i12breto Unfortunately I get the Kernel panic: vfs unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(0, 0) Any idea?
Sadly I get a segmentation fault when I try to sudo pcmanfm. Or any other sudo commands. Any ideas?
Nice to see these devices don't end up in the trash bin. So once the pi os is done and works would I be able to use it for a RetroPie device? Thanks for posting.
Nice One! How stable is the RPi OS on the surface and whats it capable off? Can u do things like watching YT or maybe even use it for Retro Gaming?
So far the only thing that doesn't work right is the battery indicator. I haven't tested YT or gaming. It's on par with a RPi 2, so even if it works I wouldn't expect much
I did the same procedure but put batocera linux on it, by far the most useful this can do
Nice! What image did you use for that?
I have some issues with command sudo pcmanfm, and my surface doesn't have a Wi-Fi connection. Can you help me?
the Link for the zImage, device tree (.dtb) and kernel modules doesn't work anymore. any help with that?
unable to play mp4 videos on vlc after installation? also, wifi gets disabled after 10 minutes and then have to reboot. Do you have any solution for this?
I get to step 16, plug in the usb, hold vol down, click power, release volume down and it recognises the usb. But hangs on a black screen with yellow and white writing. Anyone else have this problem?
When I try to start Raspberry from the USB stick, I get the message 'Zimage' is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program, or script file. What am I doing wrong? Can anybody help me further?
Was really hoping to find a way to repurpose my old Surface RT since Windows 8...well, we all feel the same about Windows 8.
An issue I ran into, under Preparing Raspberry Pi OS, step 18/19. Everything prior seemed to work as written and matched your video (newer versions of course), but I end up at the command line once Linux boots instead of the Desktop.
Check to see if you have any of the updates installed that break the process
jwa4.gitbook.io/windows/tools/tegra-jailbreak-usb#jailbreak-killing-updates
So, it seems there may be something different with the latest version of the Rasp OS. I instead installed the version you clicked on, and it went to the desktop just fine. I wiped the eMMC due to issues early on, using the guide you linked.
Yes, I've had some comments of newer RPiOS builds not working correctly. Glad you got it working
Me too. The only issue I'm having now (after copying the OS over to the eMMC), is that I don't have permission to edit the startup.nsh file. Opens as read only. @@i12bretro
Ok, not sure how, but it finally let me edit the file and I was able to complete the checklist. You rock!! Now to get the wireless figured out, lol
The last version of the tool I can find to jail break is 1.20, will this work or can someone direct me the version used in the video. The link provided in the description is dead. I really want to salvage this Surface RT if I can.
Really cool but wondering what can you do with it now? are there more apps and stuff cause I'm not finding much about it
It's basically like a raspberry pi 3, minus the gpio pins, so there's alot of options
Very good tutorial, thanks to revive my old surface rt, no more e-waste to africa haha! Thanks again :D
Awesome! Glad it was useful
Is there a way to install Linux on Surface 2?
Using this tutorial it hangs on "EFI: stub:cmdline: console=serial... ..."
can I install Ubuntu 22.04.3 LTS 64bit on my surface rt 32bit
Does anybody have a workaround for the PCManFM segmentation fault?
Your videos have been really helpful with my Surface RT PC. But I have a little problem; can't I use Raspberry Pi imager instead of BalenaEtcher?
I would think so
Raspberry Pi imager is fine. It works the same.
Hi! Sorry to bother but does the raspberry pi os browser work? Can I watch videos on it?
Nice video and thank you, everything seemed to go smooth from beginning to end. The only problem I seem to have is no WIFI. Is ther a way to add drivers? thanks for the help
Did you get the wifi to work? I have the same issue. The OS boots fine from the Surface RT, but no wifi. I'm thinking I haven't put the drivers in the right place. I'm not a linux user. Any help?
@@spacetimesystemz i have the sollution

can you run the latest chromium or firefox?
So what would happen if I followed this, but instead of using Raspbian, I used another ARM friendly OS like POP? Would it still work or is it only tied to Raspbian?
Not sure, I've never tried it. One thing to keep in mind is the CPU is 32 bit, ARMv7, so the distro would have to be built for ARM 32 bit
Excellent, thx. one question is working with 4 cores?
Yes
thx, you change de kernel to 5.17 ? @@i12bretro
Thank you Brother, how about the touchscreen, wifi, on screen keyboard, are they working well after using raspberry?. I have this surface RT

hi! I think i followed all the steps correctly but when I try to load into pi os from the flash drive, it is stuck at "random: crng init done", its been like this for a few hours now, do you know what step i could have missed or if something else is wrong?
I had the same, you need to change the startup script back to local mm, else it only works when setup USB is connected
If you have already performed the steps at 5:55 and it does this, and you see in the terminal output on the screen somewhere a mentioning of "/dev/sda2" this means something went wrong when editing the startup.nsh file. Connecting the USB drive again when receiving this error should boot you back into the OS. Then open a terminal window and type "cd /boot", then type "sudo nano startup.nsh". Here you'll see if the file is pointing to the correct path (root=/dev/mmcblk0p2) or not (root=/dev/sda2). You can edit the file if needed and then press CTRL+X to exit, followed by the Enter key if you made changes.
I had the same issue, and this worked for me.
I tried to do everything as in the video, but when I install rasberry OS from USB, my tablet continues to log into the Windows system.
