John, you really knocked it out of the park with this one. That wrench has never been so happy. I love the color, and it sure beats seeing it all rusty sitting in the back of a drawer for many years. I'm so glad all 3 tools are in a good home now, as we don't have old tool collectors living near me, and I didn't want to just give them to Goodwill or someone that would beat them up. I'm looking forward to watching many more of your excellent restorations in the future.
Great lesson on the polishes. You really made that wrench look great now! I get a kick out of people who don't understand that making a tool like that is simply a part of the fun of a hobby. I see it as being something akin as to how some people really enjoy making Steampunk items. Its all about the fun in the process, working with your hands, and making a great looking item.👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Hi Scout. ...I hope you can follow my train of thought. Another idea instead of a shim would be to take a piece of spring steel (or spring brass), put a bow in the center, and leave long enough to form two ears (bend over) to keep it in place once installed. Thanks for sharing and the color is awesome! Have a happy day!
36 hours In the big dunk. The rust all came off. Not in big chunks. Then to the thumb wheel. What a pain in the neck. Heat and SC juice. It’s stubborn as heck. Then it comes loose. As easy as pie. This is a huge help for wannabe crafters like me. Kudos for the (consistent) instructional quality of the videos, and even more for your personal touch!
The wrench turned out great. Love the red. I tried the trans 50/50 on a pipe vise my son had been restoring. The screw handle is like a c-clamp and it was frozen solid. We had tried soaking it in several things with nothing working. He was about to give up. We had used your mix but without heat. Tried that a couple of times and it came right out. I have one if those auto wrenchs waiting for a warm day to work on. Can not wait to get back into the shop. Thanks
That is really nice! The gold leaf and clear red are a perfect match for the polished metal. There is a lot of great information on this episode. Thanks to you and Bob for this tutorial.
Gosh, I love that Simichrome. I've been using it to clean up old SVEA brass camping stoves. Super fun! And nice job with the wrench! You make it look easy. Thanks for sharing.
"This is the point where you say do you wanna go further with this or put it back together." HAHAHAHA We know what you're gonna do. That's why we love you.
Gorgeous wrench! Something extra shiny about that red over gold leaf. Back from my trip and glad to catch up on some of your videos. Thanks for showing that polish's performance to us, product reviews like that are very useful and entertaining for us who are trying to gather together a collection of restoring chemicals/compounds. I'll be shipping out that package this week to you, thanks for your kindness! ♥️
Excellent restoration. Hard to call it restoration because it's better than new. In a car show this would be referred to as a "Restomod". Love that color!!! You're the Chip Foose of tools!
Always learn so much from your videos. When you said you had 3 hours into that wrench I laughed cause it’s hard to call it quits there seems like you could always do more. At least that’s how I feel with most projects. Very nice color.
Tom- You are so right, you could spend a month on any tool, it all depends on how far you want to go. I think every project has a saturation rate where you know when you had enough... LOL
Hi John, absolutely beautiful. Thanks for the videos and keep it up. I have seen that offset hole before. I suspect someone did that so that it would hang straight down on a pegboard. My 2 cents...
Thank you for the shout out! The wrench came out beautiful! I bet in the sunlight it glows! I’m glad that the shim idea is viable! My age matches the state speed limit now! 55 😁
Great video as always mate. I bought myself another one of those wrenches just last night for $6. It will also need soaking in vinegar as it’s rusty, but it’s fun. Thanks again for your efforts. 🇦🇺👍🏻
Hey John, I'd love to see a video on how you keep your shop clean and dust free. I've got a vacuum collector and a ceiling mounted shop air cleaner. I spend the last 15 minutes every night cleaning and vacuuming, yet the dust is still insane. How does a pro like you handle this mundane problem?
John- For our next shop- we must get a separate "dirty room" where all the buffing, grinding and sanding is done... You are so right, it is so hard to keep that fine dust from getting everywhere! =)
Hi Ben! Remember the reactions we got the first time we painted a wrench? LOL Now the sticker shock has worn off and it's growing on people! LOL Thanks much Ben!

Fantastic restoration. The color is great and I noticed that your new go to tool is the angle grinder. Hmmm I wonder if magdad will give the new polish a try!!
You know Frank, the angle grinder can screw up a tool in less then a second! You need a super light tough and practice... I have been practicing a lot over the last few months and I am super happy with the machine for removing a lot of material quickly. Plus it really is fun to use! -=D
Yes that color is excellent. I had no idea that gold is the special ingredient. I just did an auto wrench for my son and the Red color I used looks puny compared to the Candy Red.
John- For some reason the autowrenches really look good in Candy colors, it has just the right balance of polished metal and paint... Candy is so overpowering it can't be used in big areas! =)
WHAT? No BRASSO? You shirker! The Semi-chrome is good stuff. The camera didn't do justice for the wrench even though the mechanics were par-none! Thanks John CS! Good deal!

Good tip on the polish John.I will try to peek and put it in my arsenal I’m looking for a good brass bronze cleaner I’ll be doing a old fire hydrant and there’s gonna be a lot of polishing involved
ScoutCrafter Thanks John it’s a it’s a fire hydrant so there is paint and casting marks that I had to grind and sand out it’s a lot of work but I enjoy it. It’s for a buddy who wants it for his hobby room thing weighs 130 pounds so it’s not a small one and he wants it to Mirror finish
The candy red over gold really seems to POP! At first glimpse of the finished wrench, it was like it jumped off the screen. I think that the gold undercoat gives a warmer red than silver does.
Nice job, Scout! I don't know if you know anyone in the jewelry business. If you do; see if they'll let you have a little jeweler's rouge. I've got just a little that I got a long time ago. As you approach the finished product, use the rouge at the end. If you had to buy it, I would venture that it's pretty dang expensive. I liked what that tin you bought did. The rouge would probably be a bit of overkill, though. Imagine a 100 year old wrench you could use as a cuff link. Just kidding. Great looking wrench at the end.
Hello John, an other great wrench restoration, nice color the combination it looks nice 👍. Maybe you can show us how you stopped the rattling on wrench.🔧🔧🔧🔧🔧
Yeah, the color difference didn't show up too strong for me. BUT, that's still good paint work. The auto wrenches may have been cheap when they were made, but now they more than make up for it by virtue of being cool pieces to have in the shop.
I use mine whenever possible. I infinitely prefer the Coes style or the Billings Bicycle wrench, but the auto wrenches can realistically take more abuse than the Billings. The Coes styles are really heavy and are better suited for bigger jobs.
Rush Fitzwater Ball detents can be frustrating! The funny thing is they are quite simple, a captive ball with a spring behind it. Now if the spring is broken or weak the ball will have slop. There is a chance that the spring is rusted in the collapsed position. Try adding some penetrating fluid into the ball cavity. Other then that it’s a hard fix. 😃👍
HI Edward- The pin looked worn but worked fine, I left it because I was wondering if they were like that from the factory! I have seen some strange parts that you would swear was added on after but came that way! =)
You mentioned your 50/50 penetrating combo of Acetone and Trans fluid which I am now using to great results, what is your mineral spirits and vaseline conconcoction designed for? Thanks in advance.
The colour looks real good! (The rest of the wrench too ofcourse) I really like it, but I'm a big gold fan. I'm painting up the gas can I'm restoring, I sprayed it black first and hope it leaves the red darker wich I'm spraying now. Last weekend I bought my first craftsman screwdriver, they are kind of rare over here. Now it has no red on the handle and no remains of red too, the blue is all there tough. Is it a knock of? Thank you so much again. I think I can get the peek over here too!

Hello Andy - Just about any auto part store will Stock Automatic Transmission Fluid, it’s used in most cars around the world. Mix that up with Acetone (50/50) and let the fun begin!!! 😃👍
John Thanks man ... I’ll look into that shortly, there’s about 50/50 Manual vs. Automatic cars runnin’ around scotland right now So hopefully the folks will know whats meant by what Wrench Came Out Awesome ! I’m lookin’ into gettin’ taken in my wheelchair to a Sunday Tool Market in the Summer if I can Personally even tho this would just be paint or new replacement parts that would fit I’d love to try and rescue something in Flat-Black, Chrome, Gold, Brass, Copper, Nickel colors etc The old Stream-Punk look “ Doe’s It “ for me right-there ! SO DOES the “ 1950’s Pastel Shades “ too ! I’d love to see YOU do something in those colors for sure !! ?
Nice video! The wrench came out very nice! The new red color seems to me a bit more dark and less glossy than the one you have used at your previous videos. You have restored a lot of monkey wrenches so I guess they were really popular at the beginning of the 20th century. But nowadays no one uses them and almost everyone prefer the newer style of adjustable wrench. Do you know why this shift happened? Is there a flaw at the design of the monkey wrench? Is the adjustable wrench easier and cheaper to make? Thanks in advance!
So you turned a junker into a $300, ScoutCrafter collectible again. You should start putting your Serial Numbers on these. Then put out your catalogue to keep track of them.
John, you really knocked it out of the park with this one. That wrench has never been so happy. I love the color, and it sure beats seeing it all rusty sitting in the back of a drawer for many years. I'll bet that hole was offset so that when you hang it on the wall , it hangs nice and straight.
I always use the hole on that wrench to hang things from! =)
It's true! I never use these auto wrenches! The Crescent type is so much easier to use!
John, do you reuse the vinegar or is it a one shot deal? If you do reuse does it loose effectiveness?
David- I am using the same 5 gallons of over a year now!!!! =O Looks dark and murky but works!!! LOL

You should start putting your Serial Numbers on these. Then put out your catalogue to keep track of them.
