Tractor pulling has got to be the most bat-shit insane racing sport. "Hmm... I have 5 3000hp blown V8's. I know, lets tape them together and strap some wheels on them!" Same goes with the jet powered ones. I fucking love this sport.
And all done by some farmer with money. Not mocking them...far from it. They do AMAZING crap with ingenuity and hard work. It's incredible engineering. Imagine the stress on that driveline!
I've been to shows in the Omni in Atlanta many moons ago and health issues were inevitable regardless of where you sat. Down low and you lose hearing. Up high and your eyes and lungs get fried from the exhaust. But back then the cheap seats meant you didn't have to buy overpriced beer because the high was free 😄
Direct drive, similar to inboard boat engines. There is a clutch assembly in there somewhere, and a giant case where all the shafts mate up with a monstrous ring and pinion style differential.
Those pry bar things are starting bars,the other engines are used to start any engines that have stop running,they pull back on the bar to cause the clutch to engage on the non running engine causing it to turn over and start.

So much engineering goes into making 5 massive engines work together to make a ton of power. It's a shame that there isn't a more practical use for it that this.

If your car has 1000HP and you geared it to have a super long gear that had a tiny bit of torque, you will start moving, but once the air and friction starts effecting your car, your maximum velocity will be almost nothing.
I remember when tractor pulls where,when farmers brought there tractors to the fair to compete aainst each other,then money gets involved and the fun turns into this the grand prize was worth winning these guys blow up one motor and it costs alot more then they would have won

Locking up the glider clutches... They start the top engine with an external starter and then revs that one up and locks in the 2 engines on one side to start those and then locks up the 2 on the other side to start them...

ok that makes sense if they dont use pcv valves i just never seen it. another question about these tractor pullers. why dont they use tires with spikes on them like snow tires for best traction. also when the sled digs into the ground at the end to stop the tractor or does that mean the tractor couldnt finish the pull?
dunno its not a matter of pulling its overcoming the drag from that sled.. If you watch an oversize load going down the highway you'll notice the little truck has no problem pulling 40 ton steel rolls.. because its not pulling it... its just sitting on top of the 12 tons multi axle trailer... ooooohhh more wheels, less friction, more easy to pull.. ;-) the science behind it is the contest not the weight they're pulling

Can someone explain to me why it is so easy for the tractor to pull at first but seems to become more encumbered the further it goes? Does the trailer dig more into the ground the further it travels?
the weight thats on the trailer slides - so the further they pull, the closer the weight gets to the back of the tractor. the closer the weight is, the harder it is to pull.
It doesn't "dig" perse, but drag. The friction goes up as the weight presses the sled into the ground harder as it moves forward, making it harder to drag along.

It's just engine compression that passes past the piston rings and trys to pressurize the crank case, its called blow-by.. they dont have pcv valves so they use this type of blow off. its called road draft pcv.

That's the limit of the tractor weight. In the US, this would be similar to the 9600# class. Just before pulling, they go across a scale, and if they can add weight, they'll add it to the front end. For those comments on the small tires: They are that small so they can turn quickly when they come onto the track. Also, if there is any touchdown going down the track, the tractor will turn more. However, the drivers drive more with the pedals than steering wheel. Each side has a brake; if they are drifting to the right, they brake on the left to bring it around. I know there are lots of people that don't like this sport, and that's ok. The beauty in this sport is getting all the power you can out of a certain weight restriction. Like another poster said, there aren't cooling systems on these (except for some of the Super Stock Diesels), and that's why they were running around in this video. Also, there is a time limit from the time they get on the track until they can begin their pull. For newbies: Look closely at the small box on top of the sled. As it goes down the track, it moves forward, off the wheels of the sled, and onto the flat dragging part of the sled.That's what slows them down. Tractor pulling has very little to do with speed; the contest is in the distance pulled.

If you look at the sled in the video, the weight starts at the rear and moves forward as he pulls making the sled harder to drag.
