Different purpose, but it's amazing how small Ken Warby's "Spirit of Australia" was by comparison. Still the fastest boat ever, remarkably a record that's stood for 45 years.
Spirit of australia was a slightly different animal. It was built for straight line speed, and not circuit racing And she didn't have a gearbox like the unlimited - the U class uses a T55 Lycoming turboshaft engine out of a chinook helicopter and a gearbox to drive a cavitating surface drive propeller (hence the MASSIVE roostertail) Spirt of Aus used the thrust of the westinghouse J34 engine (the same engine used in a pair in the F2H Banshee jet fighter) The form factor of the j34 turbojet engine was quite a bit slimmer than the Lycoming T55 turboshaft mill in the Unlimiteds.
Better days for hydro racing! Last month's Seattle race had five -- count-em, FIVE -- boats. And that's about how many races make a season. Bud vs Muncie was awesome! But, Luddite that I am, I've gotta say they sounded so much better before turbines!
Jimmy Shane grew up in my town racing boats with his whole family. I’ve been friends with his parents for years. Every one of them have been APBA champions.

They neighbor used to come over and see what we were up to, Jeff Knudsen and he stole my idea. I owned Hurricane Performance Boats then, he worked for Jennings Corp then. It was an adjustable wing in between the front picklfork tunnel and I could set the night to fly above the waves and the bow would fly steady at any altitude I wanted. It was originally designed so they would not flip over. I feel pretty ripped off. And it would be cool to get credit were credit is due. I wish Jeffy would have never been let in the door....

Yes. For me starting in 1970 at nine years old.
I watched a version of this boat testing In San Diego somewhere between 1985 and 1988. Very impressive.
Growing up in Del Mar, California we used to go every year to Mission Bay in San Diego to watch the Thunderbolts race. These boats would pass by us only a few hundred feet away.... awesome power, shook the ground. Before the races during warmup and trial runs we could hear them from my front porch...30 miles to the north.
Notice it's left turns only at speed?
That explains the placement of the rudder and that metal "dagger board" on the left side that was not matched on the right.
I remember as a kid in the 70’s..we lived near a freeway that runs through southern Idaho. There was a Stuckey’s about a mile from our house. All of these boats would be stopping there enroute to the Burley (IDAHO) regatta. They were fascinating pieces of machinery. 🤙
Guys, HERE is The Savior
HalleluYAH translates “Praise ye YaH”
YaH is The Heavenly Father
YaH arrives via the TENT OF MEETING

Isaiah 42:8
"I am YaH; that is my Name! I will not yield my glory to another or my praise to idols.
Isaiah 43:11
I, I am YAH, and there is no other Savior but Me.
Isaiah 45:5
I am YaH, and there is none else.
Love watching Miss Budweiser history 🇺🇸
I love that sound... A jet boat on full song. I was lucky enough to be around when the Merlin's gave way to the jets. Unlimited Hydro .... A long time ago.
Anyone else remember the miss Pay n Pak or the Squire Shop or Atlas VanLines boats that put on real races along side the mighty Bud. Ah for the good ole days of thunder clap of the waves and real roostertails!!
Cellular One, Miss Rock 99.9, Smokin Joe Camel..
Miss Pay n Pak, was so dominant every time I heard them call a Race! I still remember seeing the Rooster tails as we crossed Lake Washington! Long ago at 11 Yrs. old
And "Oh Boy Oberto"!
Those boats are restored at the Unlimited Museum in Kent Wasahington! They all run, David Williams Curator
@@Paul-ls1qo great to know they exist, not ground up into pedalboat bottoms.
Totally Awesome! Miss this boat!👍✌️
The good ole days!
Fascist Self-report
Guys,
YaH The Heavenly FATHER HIMSELF was Who they Crucified for our sins, NOT jesus, and “HERE IS THE PROOF”
From the Ancient Semitic Scroll:
"Yad He Vav He" is what Moses wrote, when Moses asked YaH His Name (Exodus 3)
Ancient Semitic Direct Translation
Yad - "Behold The Hand"
He - "Behold the Breath"
Vav - "Behold The NAIL"
Hell yeah! This was filmed the same year I was born! Wish I would have been a little older to enjoy the 90’s a bit more!

What a sweet looking truck and trailer set up.
ford cabover, with mack sponsorship.
Different purpose, but it's amazing how small Ken Warby's "Spirit of Australia" was by comparison. Still the fastest boat ever, remarkably a record that's stood for 45 years.
Spirit of australia was a slightly different animal.
It was built for straight line speed, and not circuit racing
And she didn't have a gearbox like the unlimited - the U class uses a T55 Lycoming turboshaft engine out of a chinook helicopter and a gearbox to drive a cavitating surface drive propeller (hence the MASSIVE roostertail)
Spirt of Aus used the thrust of the westinghouse J34 engine (the same engine used in a pair in the F2H Banshee jet fighter)
The form factor of the j34 turbojet engine was quite a bit slimmer than the Lycoming T55 turboshaft mill in the Unlimiteds.
The man was an avails genius that spent years and years chasing that record. Brilliant and brave.
@@ferrarif1360
The man had some big hairy Cojones for sure.
@@BillCoxoutfit it's in the Sydney Maritime museum. It's remarkably small for what it accomplished.
@@stinkyfungus as I said, different purpose...
Super high quality mustaches all around. Hell yeah.
You've probably never built much more than a fart . Shut up and watch the real men
Better days for hydro racing!
Watched it on the Detroit River. Miss those days.
Nothing sounds like an unlimited hydroplane. Truly impressive.
I remember seeing Bernie little at the Texas State Fair! His boat at the time was on display and we talked to him! I was no more than 10 years old so some 50 years ago! Boat racing was always on TV back then!
Brings back memories when we used to watch this class race at Lake Tahoe
Lots of memories of Bernie little in Lakeland Florida seen Miss Budweiser on lake eloise at cypress gardens back in the 90s
That is a beautiful boat, looks astonishing and is a beast in the water!!
remember watching Dean Chenoweth meeting his end driving Miss Budweiser in '82. Was rather different watching fiberglass explode back then.
Still the queen. Beautiful as ever
ABSOLUTELY GORGEOUS ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
I remember Wilwock grinding and polishing on his own propellers when he rode for Pico American dream. We used to cut them on our (back then fancy 5x mill. )
Remember attending those races in Clear Lake,Tx back in the good ole days for sure.
I used to work at Circus Circus back when we were beating the Bud team. Fun times.
Thanks Bernie for the great racing even though I preferred the old piston powered boats.
That is one beautiful, bad ass boat..
Stood next to this boat at the brewery in Houston when I was a kid. Awesome machine.
My dad used to take us to watch miss Budweiser and miss kisw at seafare in Seattle when I was a kid in the early 80s. This brings back great memories.
I miss watching Thunder On The Ohio. I haven’t thought about these boat races in forever. Whatever happened to these hydroplane boat races?
They still race in Washington State just not as popular as it once was. I was told parts for the turbine motors were getting hard to find and costs got out of control. That’s when a lot of big names dropped out.
Best options I get in my neck of the woods nowadays are the bigblock hydros...still fun but not the same😪
@@coryernewein. I seems like piston engines are the only chance for this sport to regain popularity. I read that the turbines are the reason of the decline in number of teams and sponsors because it just cost too much, and doesn’t pay out enough. It’s like Isle of Man TT. If the superbikes cost $100,000 each, the race would be done because nobody could afford to race.
It all went to hell after Bernie died, I think they still race at Madison on 4th of july weekend.
The boat is awesome, but the truck that brought it there is the one I really want.
We bought that IH at an estate sale 4 years ago, it's still in nice condition.
@@genefogarty5395 The truck in the video is a Ford cl 9000.
Man that takes me back to the 80's. I remember Berny Little he was good people.
We used to go every year to Mission Bay to thunder on the bay and we used to get the party with these guys boy are they fun at night they're fun during the day I miss those days
That whole set up today would be badass
I always enjoyed watching these boats launching and racing at lake of the ozarks. Never knew how big and beautiful these monsters are!
I saw this bad ass when she was on display at Busch Gardens of Tampa.
Absolutely a monster
It was nice to see Chip Hanauer piloting the 1995 Miss Budweiser again for Bernie Little and Budweiser Racing. 🤓
“Hydro thunder: Hurricane!!”-banging ass techno starts playing-
Literally the coolest thing I’ve seen all day
You still play? I still go online and race when I can find lobbies to join
@@SegwayBossk I think the lobbies where closed? But it's still on the Microsoft store for like....9 bucks.

The sound of that thing at speed, amazing and mean!
I met Chip at the Pike Placer Market when I worked there, he was the nicest guy in the world!!!
And now you know why some folks back in the '80s used high-powered machineries to go from Cuba to Florida you know to deliver packages 🤣
I Remember the boat on a trailer stopping at my dad's Body shop . Friend of my dad's worked at Cougar boats and asked the driver if he could show it to my dad. Shuswap Lake, mid 90's maybe?
Old school lane Washington racing, love to see it is still around today
What a young Chip.. Bernie was a class act. Personally, I miss the Thunderboats with their piston engines.
My dad used to build wire harness and some other small electrical stuff for Fred back in the Pico American Dream days and the sister boat that would have KISW on it for the Seattle round. I got to go with him to the shop a few times as a kid.
Back in the early 90's I was a speedboat designer. I had drawn up a wing on the front of my tunnel Hull boat and was the 1st to ever come up with this type of design.
My brother knew that feeling. He thought up the 1968 Indycar lotus turbine body. Somebody else unfortunately did too
I use to live in Lakeland Florida. Home of bernie little and the miss budweiser, ❤️
Why did they stop running this hull ????
Incorrect pronoun.
Became the U-37, and had the center filled in.
🍺Very awesome 🍺
fuel restrictions made all the hulls like this obsolete. the hull was "filled in".
Remember when they were powered with rolls Royce Merlin V-12 from p51 never seen any races live but did see them on tv
That hull was definitely smooth. I'm assuming it put up good numbers too? How did it do?
Growing up in Detroit my friends and I would get a ride to Belle Isle and watch the Hydroplanes race on the Detroit River that was when they were powered by Allison engines before the Jet engines.
The good ole days weren't they?!👍✌️
I remember seeing Ms Bud in Barrie Ontario, in a compound perched on its angled trailer...watched over by an awesome Bull Mastiff named Stitches....1999...good memories
MAN OH MAN do i love racing!! Been a big open wheel race fan mosta my life. But myself Unlimed Hydroplane's get my heart pounding. Don't know why the popularity never exploded. Real race cars don't have doors windsheild's or hood's.. That auta piss somebody off for sure. lOL
2:43 the coolest Star Wars Speeder ever! Lol
I was about 6 years old seeing these race in northern michigan. I vaguely remember it but what I do remember is the section we were spectating from was a smaller forested area with about a 200ft opening with trees all around us. If you blinked you'd miss a pass from one
The Indy race 🏁 car of the water 💧, what was the top speed of this trial?
All that power into that tiny prop. Incredible
Did it use a prop? It was it using jet thrust?
@@dronepro7316 , the turbine provided shaft power just like on a helicopter.
My whole life, I thought it was just jet thrust.
We used to go to the races in Detroit and Madison Wi. back in the 60’s and 70’s. You could almost touch the boats when they came out of the Rooster Tail turn in Detroit. I do miss the “Thunder on the river” along with the sounds of the Rolls Royce and Allison engines roaring by you.
Wow! And that was back in ninety-five.
Hands down the sexiest thing on the water without a pulse. Growing up in the NW I’ve seen these beauties on the water at Seafair many times in this era. This was the pinnacle. RAD!
Nice to see,red rocket!! Detroit Loves you guys!!! G
Are these unlimited hydros still racing today?
