diyforknucklehe... How to build an outdoor, homemade fire pit out of an old washing machine drum! It looks great and works fantastic. Fire pits are conventionally made from stone or bricks and as the name suggests, are made into a pit in the ground. The fire pit that l have just built is a little different to that.

My outdoor fire pit is not only cheap (mine cost me $6.00! YES $6.00!) but is also so easy to make. The basic materials you require are an old discarded washing machine (you use the drum out of this for the fire pit) and an old chair that has metal legs. That is it!
When looking for fire pit ideas, there is more than just building a fire pit with bricks or a fire pit with rocks. Think outside the square, which is where the washing machine drum comes to the fore.
Homemade fire pits, like the one in this video, are fun to make and can be used for not only heat and atmosphere, but also fire pit cooking. All you need to do is place an old oven cooking tray across the top and you have a ready made cook top. Perfect for cooking those chops and sausages.
Having a backyard fire pit or an outdoor fire pit will be the envy of all your friends. So get busy and build a fire pit this weekend!!

Thanks Dig. Appreciate the comment. Cheers
I happen to have bought an old steel ring xmas tree stand . This thing is heavy . I bought it for a dollar and knew it would come in handy for some future project . They just don't make product like they used to . The xmas tree stand is heavy with a large steel ring for the base and a 8 in steel tube with bolts for the tree . The thing will work great for this project . As I am simultaneously making a screen room canopy for the back yard area . Thank You for the Idea and God Bless
Thanks Fantasy9100. Appreciate the comment mate. Cheers
Thanks for the comment Stuffy. You might need a few of them down there in Tassie l'd reckon :) I think she's strictly an outdoors heater. Would be nice inside though. Cheers mate.
Hi Marylin, you're not wrong. Nothing better than have a couple of beers around it on a cold night. Thanks for your comment. Cheers
G'day Norbury. The fibro (6mm compressed cement sheet.....not asbestos) works an absolute treat and l highly recommend using it.
Your rocket stove incinerator sounds like a ripper. I would like to see a photo. Cheers mate.
Just discovered your channel. Love it. You are accessible, waste no time, give clear instruction and you're funny. *****
Thanks so much Corinne! Welcome aboard!...appreciate the feedback 👍😁🇦🇺
Great job! Thanks for the video. That work of art has a modern look that actually looks expensive.
You used the correct type of chair. What I would not recommend is using an adjustable chair with an air piston height adjustment. The piston could explode under high heat.
Hey DP, you must haven been grannies golden boy to have been left the twin tub! you must be the envy of all your mates :) Good thinking with the gas idea. I'm sure a man with your plumbing genius and in depth gas know-how should be able to knock something up. Cheers old boy.
No matter how far back I go on your videos, you Never Cease to Amaze me💕💕💕
👍😁...Thanks Susan....that old fire pit is still going strong!....not quite so shiny....but still pumping out the heat 👍😁🇦🇺
G'day bioteacher. You can, but it won't be stainless steal. It will discolour but it will still do the job. Cheers
Hey Furball2k, how are you mate? Stainless steel will last for a long, long time. I've had quite a few fires in the one that was featured in the video and its held up well. Not as shiny as it was brand new (it has had a furnace blazing away inside it after all) but fully functional none the less. Thanks for your comment mate. Cheers
G'day Simon, thanks for the comment. Mate the only embers that would hit the deck are from those that come from the top of the fire just like any fire would. What you could do if you're worried is place a metal tray under the unit. This would catch any stray embers. Cheers :)
Thanks chickenby. Cheers mate
I have an old office chair, and an old washing machine sitting out in my shop that I never though to do this with. Thanks and cheers.
+ExcessHorsepower Sounds like a plan mate. Good luck with it. Cheers
What an ingenious way of using that old washer. It looks great. I love ideas like this where I can use my everlast to make unique projects out of discarded things. Unfortunately, I think my old washer has a tub that is painted so not so shiny and impressive.
Sorry about that Ace. All you need to do is simply bolt the drum to the chair frame. Drill some holes through the frame and the drum and then just insert the bolts and tighten them up. Good luck👍👍
Thanks Nathan...glad you liked it mate. An easy way to get a different drum is just go down to a shop that fixes up washing machines. They are always throwing away machines that have silver drums. Good luck👍😁
Thanks Stickman. Cheers mate
I just made one of these. Wow uncle Knackers, you only look like a youth on this one. Lol. Many thanks.
Hahahahaha....it was a little while ago now Dene 👍😁
Brilliant idea. Great tip knackers!
👍👍....Thanks Michael! Glad you liked it ate 👍😁🇦🇺
The Mayor, thanks for the comment mate. You can see the fire in action at the very start of the video. It's an absolute ripper! Cheers :)
Just took a machine apart my self and made a fire with mesquite wood and it held up to the heat. It worked great.
Good stuff Chris. Cheers mate
very nice made
Enjoy the video, nice and easy, simple steps, will make one or two. Cheers.
No worries T.P! Thanks for watching 👍🇦🇺😁
right on,I love re utilization
Cool. I have been brain storming how to make a mobile pit since last summer. I have been using my old smoker grill. However I like the height of this. it would let out more heat to those sitting around it. Greetings from Colorado.
Thanks Gitar Zan. Glad you liked it. Cheers mate
drum out of a washing machine fucking great idea could care less about the stand but be a hell of a lot easier than rolling the dam steel brilliant.
+motherchucka1 Cheers motherchucka. The washing machine drum works a treat. I've had mine for a couple of years with countless fires and it's still going strong!
WARNING if using a chair be carful not to use a one with a up and down lever the gas cylinder may explode
These drums have exploded and injured people in some cases.
I hope people are doing their homework first!
Whack a bit of chain on there for a spinning UFO effect! 🤣🤣
😂....You're an ideas man James! 😁 I only just got rid of that fire pit about a month ago.....I couldn't tell you how many fires we had in it over the years but it was a lot! The styling, events manager finally decided that we needed an upgrade so lashed out for a new one 👍😁
Poetry! Thank you for the inspiration. Loving it 👍🏻..
Stay safe out there from the UK.
Cheers for that! Thanks for watching.....much appreciated 👍😁🇦🇺
Great idea. Thanks for sharing! Couple of issues... You'd need to ensure the chair isn't too high or it might fall over. Also, it looks hard to clean. A hatch for emptying it might be handy if you've nowhere to empty it out.
G'day Henry, thanks for the comment mate. If you use a standard height chair like l did in the video, you have no dramas with stability. Cleaning wise, it is no drama as well. I used the fire virtually every day over winter and there was a build up of about 50mm of ash. You can easily scoop this out. I wouldn't worry about a hatch as it's not necessary but you can install one if you like. Cheers mate
You write "couple of issues" one being hard to clean, LMFAO have you heard of tipping it upside down and giving it a few taps? Ha ha ha.
Pretty wild design. that would be quick to make with my everlast plasma cutter. Great idea.
Thanks Walter....it's been used a hell of a lot and is still going strong 👍😁
I enjoyed how much you enjoyed it! Very clever!
Thanks Marina.....the fire pit has been an awesome addition to our back yard and have used it heaps! 👍😁
Great video mate and good tips !!! we have been doing this hear in Australia for years now !!! If you can get your hand on an old beer keg there even better still !! a bit more work as you have to cut them !!! but there made with fairly thick high grade stainless steel that will outlast you , your kids and your grandkids !!! !! you need to also cut breather slots or drill holes in the side for the fire to breath !!! just a few tips if you can find one !!! I also have made a few chiminea style fires out of old lpg tanks from a car !!!
Looks gright!
👍👍
the only reason i watch your videos is because i love when you say "great tip knackers" I piss my pants laughing!... thanks
Hey burpless, it was fired up at the start of the video . Go back and check it out. Cheers mate
You are clever uncle knackas, I am going to try that, thanks very much for sharing
Blunka, the fire pit is an absolute rippa! Give it a go. Cheers
That looks great and its just what I was wanting to make but just didn't know how or where to start. Only thing you didn't show was how did you connect the bowl to the legs (which was the bit I was waiting for) as I don't have a welder etc. How did you do that bit. I love the finished product... PERFECT !!!!
wazza6942 Thanks Wazza. No welder required mate. All you need to do is drill a hole through the washing machine bowl and the base of the chair and bolt the two together. Cheers
Excellent video and great looking fire pit ! Love it !
Thanks David....yeah l love it as well mate. It's still going strong after countless fires. Cheers 👍
Awesome work, I can tell by your hands, you are a hard worker. Alright in my book mate.
Glad you liked it Tony 👍👍😁
Wow you are genius
Thank you for sharing
Thanks for the comment larrmorr. Let me know how how it turns out. Cheers mate
Great video with the best tutorial
Thanks BloodSweatnBass. Appreciate it. Cheers
Great comment dugggyyyyyyyyy!!. Cheers mate.
I absolutely love your videos!
Thanks Danielle! Glad you like them. Cheers :-)
Great Job
👍👍....Thanks Pon! It's still going strong after all these years and countless fires 👍😊
GREAT IDEA !!! My question is how does it hold up over time ?? Does the drum warp any after having several hot fires in it ??
G'day huf67. I've had my drum for around a year and l used it virtually everyday over winter and some of spring. After all this the drums shape has not altered one bit. Above the cement sheet the drum has surface rust (from the heat of the fire) but below the cement sheet the drum looks like brand new (just goes to show how well the cement sheet works). Thanks for the query. Cheers mate
cool cool fire pit. thanks for the idea.
Glad you liked it Dan. Cheers mate
thanx mate will try that and let you know wish me luck
👍👍👍👍👍👍👍😁
What an awesome guy!
Hope you enjoyed the video CaptainLoveMachine. Cheers mate
I like your enthusiasm, but
....and injured people while using them as fire pits.
On one blog, a person wrote:
"...after about 15 minutes of fire time there was an explosion from the pit . there was shiney shit all over the yard that looked like sand. it seemes to have come from the inside of the tub."
In a similar case in Baltimore:
"A 65-year-old grandfather and his 38-year-old son were airlifted to University of Maryland Shock Trauma, and were listed in serious condition Monday, officials said."
Nice work Shane!! Ripper!!!
Thanks Darren. Appreciate the comment mate. Cheers
Clever, and a great way to recycle. Now let us see what you can make out of a old refrigerator.
Thanks Greg.
fire bad - frankenstein
Uncle knackers i saw someone throwing out a washer drum the other day and really wished i had a truck instead of my car. Still though my friend gave me a thick aluminium planter that i drilled a few holes in but that drum would have been brilliant
Yeah the washer drums work really well and they look good too. Maybe next time you might be in the truck 👍
Nice one buddy
Cheers mate😁👍🇦🇺
Great video,& watched some of your others.good stuff, will have a go on this one soon..do you get much hot ash/embers dropping out.if yes ill work out a safety base as may use on my decking
And you could rewire the motor for a wind turbine! Thanks for posting even after all these years! How'd it hold up?
G'day N.B......The old girls holding up really well. Not as shiny as it once was but still gets used every time it gets cold 👍 Thanks for watching 👍😁🇦🇺
Very nice great job
Thanks Carlos
darn good idea and you cant beat stainless steel specially if it did not cost you.
Works beautifully mate. Thanks for watching. Cheers
You legend mate!
Superb !!!
Cheers Sarid 👍😁
Couldn't you have just burn stuff on the seat of the chair and sat on the washing machine?
Great cheers mate
Does a clothes dryer have the same kind of drum with holes as the washing machine you showed?
Why would you need to protect the base of the drum from hot coals? It's not going to melt is it?
pappajinx
With how well that would breathe and draft it's going to be a very hot burn.
Those drums are only made of 18ga SS at best.
Stainless will decarbuerize at these temperatures if left unchecked.
In the end it winds up being less resilient then even mild steel.
Hi Mate!
The only problem with your older episodes is the lack of
‘Dad Jokes’. 😊 Joe in NJ, USA
Hahahahahah.....I don't think l was old enough back then to qualify Joe 😂
Kind hearted
you're bloody awesome!
:-)
This was awesome because of this vid I subscribed
Richard Vazquez Thanks Richard. Glad you liked it mate :-)
Cheers!
Hey great video I just got everything for this, but I want to put coal inside, how much coal do you think I should use, mate?
+Viraj Bharadwa I suppose it depends on what size Bowl you use Viraj. You may have to do some experimenting. Good luck with it. Cheers
You're so damn clever I love it I can't wait to start my project
timothy jeanal Thanks Tim. Good luck with your project. Send me a picture when you're done. Cheers mate :-)
sure thing my friend!
That chair looks better than my computer chair.
:-)
hay mate how u been holding up been a bit hectic in QLD.
j have a question I built a fire pit from our old machine put it on char base but didn't realise it's a hydraulic lift just wondering if you might have an idea on how to release the gas inside the cylinder or some way not be a threat with the fire doh any advise would be appreciated
Yeah all good down here mate👍 I reckon if you drill a small hole in the cylinder you should be ok. Good luck 👍😁🇦🇺
Hey how that work out. As I did the same thing. Want to make sure it’s safe.
As in used a hydraulic chair. Not sure if drilling a hole in it is safe. If it is where exactly do I drill it?
I'm making one out and old toilet, a hair dryer and a toaster... God Bless from the US💚🍀🇺🇸🌝🌔🌓🌒🌑🌘🌗🌖😇
Hahahahahaha..g'day mate 👍😁
What was the thing you put in the drum ? and where would you buy thst
+David help David the stuff is just cement sheet ( 4 or 6mm compressed fibre cement sheeting) which you can buy at any hardware store. Good luck with it. Cheers
How do you dump the ashes out once the fire is out?
It's amazing how little ash is left once the fire is out. I clean mine out maybe twice a year. When l do, l just use a small shovel to remove it. Cheers
3/4 the way though taking apart a top loader washing machine to do the same.
Good stuff Nick.....there's a bit of mucking around getting the bowl removed isn't there? :-) Hope it goes well mate. I use mine a stack and it's still going strong. I've actually started a little bit of a trend with a lot of my mates making one :-)
how well do those casters roll in the grass?
Not that well mate. On concrete or pavers they work really well.
shaneconlan1 sorry I knew that I just couldn't help my self I apologize!
Put a motor on the washing drum then you wil get a vortex
Now that's not a bad idea Mike :-)
Haha I love it! Now how well will the stainless hold up to fire?
I'd be curious to see it after you've had a few fires in it... thanks man =^~^=
Does drum rust after fire and heat after some time?
Yeah it does mate but most metal does after being exposed to fire 👍
@@diyforknuckleheads But does rust in such rate as a common metal? I know that is 400-430 SS, but with magnetic properties.
P8.5 Mate, mine is still going strong after 5 years and countless fires. 👍
@@diyforknuckleheads thanks 🍺🍺
Good on yeah mate
Thanks Bucket Head 👍😁
a porcilian coated one is better it last a lot longer but he has got some good ideas
lovestory952 You're right, porcelain ones do last longer but they're like hens teeth to find. I tried to get one but just could't find one. Cheers
washing machine repair places rubbish tip
lovestory952 I tried all the repair places and they very rarely see one these days and the tip is where l live is harder to get into than fort knox! They don't let anyone rummage through their stuff anymore :-(
bummer mate maybe the hard waste people put out
That's pretty fu#@ing good👌👏
Beverlymacker We’re actually sitting around it as we speak😂👍👍🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺
How do you empty it the next day?
A lot of the times you don't need to Larry. I've gone a whole winter without emptying it. I like to leave a layer of ash on the bottom because it also helps to preserve the bottom of the bowl. If you do want to clean it, al you need to do is get inside it with a pan and scoop it out. Cheers
Okay thank you.
Had you been smoking something mate hahahaha?
Cheers xxpryoxx75.
Hahaah.. I LOVE IT THANKS.
Good stuff mate 😁👍
More of a brazier than a fire pit, but good on ya....
👏👏👏👍👌🎄🎅🏻🇳🇴😷
Oi Knackers, one question mate: My Granny left me an old Twin Tub in her Will, do you think I could make a Patio Heater with that & few gas cylinders?? Have you any pointers as I don't know where to start!!
Oh, one last thing; don't put yer cat in the washing machine, you may get a sock in the pussy.
Keep up the good work dear boy, a real job may pop up soon.
Why should I watch your videos on how to make stuff? You guys drive on the wrong side of the road, etc.
Hidden Arizona by the way do you own a fire pit shop???😁
