    diyforknucklehe... How to build an outdoor, homemade fire pit out of an old washing machine drum! It looks great and works fantastic. Fire pits are conventionally made from stone or bricks and as the name suggests, are made into a pit in the ground. The fire pit that l have just built is a little different to that.

    My outdoor fire pit is not only cheap (mine cost me $6.00! YES $6.00!) but is also so easy to make. The basic materials you require are an old discarded washing machine (you use the drum out of this for the fire pit) and an old chair that has metal legs. That is it!
    When looking for fire pit ideas, there is more than just building a fire pit with bricks or a fire pit with rocks. Think outside the square, which is where the washing machine drum comes to the fore.
    Homemade fire pits, like the one in this video, are fun to make and can be used for not only heat and atmosphere, but also fire pit cooking. All you need to do is place an old oven cooking tray across the top and you have a ready made cook top. Perfect for cooking those chops and sausages.
    Having a backyard fire pit or an outdoor fire pit will be the envy of all your friends. So get busy and build a fire pit this weekend!!
    Hope you enjoy the video. Let me know what you think and please SUBSCRIBE to my Channel.

    I happen to have bought an old steel ring xmas tree stand . This thing is heavy . I bought it for a dollar and knew it would come in handy for some future project . They just don't make product like they used to . The xmas tree stand is heavy with a large steel ring for the base and a 8 in steel tube with bolts for the tree . The thing will work great for this project . As I am simultaneously making a screen room canopy for the back yard area . Thank You for the Idea and God Bless

    Great job! Thanks for the video. That work of art has a modern look that actually looks expensive.
    You used the correct type of chair. What I would not recommend is using an adjustable chair with an air piston height adjustment. The piston could explode under high heat.

    Hey Furball2k, how are you mate? Stainless steel will last for a long, long time. I've had quite a few fires in the one that was featured in the video and its held up well. Not as shiny as it was brand new (it has had a furnace blazing away inside it after all) but fully functional none the less. Thanks for your comment mate. Cheers

  • @diyforknuckleheads

    G'day Simon, thanks for the comment. Mate the only embers that would hit the deck are from those that come from the top of the fire just like any fire would. What you could do if you're worried is place a metal tray under the unit. This would catch any stray embers. Cheers :)

      Sorry about that Ace. All you need to do is simply bolt the drum to the chair frame. Drill some holes through the frame and the drum and then just insert the bolts and tighten them up. Good luck👍👍

    Great idea. Thanks for sharing! Couple of issues... You'd need to ensure the chair isn't too high or it might fall over. Also, it looks hard to clean. A hatch for emptying it might be handy if you've nowhere to empty it out.

    • @diyforknuckleheads
      @diyforknuckleheads  11 років тому

      G'day Henry, thanks for the comment mate. If you use a standard height chair like l did in the video, you have no dramas with stability. Cleaning wise, it is no drama as well. I used the fire virtually every day over winter and there was a build up of about 50mm of ash. You can easily scoop this out. I wouldn't worry about a hatch as it's not necessary but you can install one if you like. Cheers mate

    Great video mate and good tips !!! we have been doing this hear in Australia for years now !!! If you can get your hand on an old beer keg there even better still !! a bit more work as you have to cut them !!! but there made with fairly thick high grade stainless steel that will outlast you , your kids and your grandkids !!! !! you need to also cut breather slots or drill holes in the side for the fire to breath !!! just a few tips if you can find one !!! I also have made a few chiminea style fires out of old lpg tanks from a car !!!

    • @diyforknuckleheads
      @diyforknuckleheads  10 років тому

      G'day huf67. I've had my drum for around a year and l used it virtually everyday over winter and some of spring. After all this the drums shape has not altered one bit. Above the cement sheet the drum has surface rust (from the heat of the fire) but below the cement sheet the drum looks like brand new (just goes to show how well the cement sheet works). Thanks for the query. Cheers mate

      With how well that would breathe and draft it's going to be a very hot burn.
      Those drums are only made of 18ga SS at best.
      Stainless will decarbuerize at these temperatures if left unchecked.
      In the end it winds up being less resilient then even mild steel.

    Haha I love it! Now how well will the stainless hold up to fire?
    I'd be curious to see it after you've had a few fires in it... thanks man =^~^=

    How do you empty it the next day?

    • @diyforknuckleheads
      @diyforknuckleheads  8 років тому

      A lot of the times you don't need to Larry. I've gone a whole winter without emptying it. I like to leave a layer of ash on the bottom because it also helps to preserve the bottom of the bowl. If you do want to clean it, al you need to do is get inside it with a pan and scoop it out. Cheers

    Oi Knackers, one question mate: My Granny left me an old Twin Tub in her Will, do you think I could make a Patio Heater with that & few gas cylinders?? Have you any pointers as I don't know where to start!!
    Oh, one last thing; don't put yer cat in the washing machine, you may get a sock in the pussy.
    Keep up the good work dear boy, a real job may pop up soon.

    Why should I watch your videos on how to make stuff? You guys drive on the wrong side of the road, etc.
