  • How to Build a Workbench. Build this Cheap, Sturdy Workbench for your Garage. A workbench is a must for your garage or shed. When it comes to building a workbench l needed to satisfy three criteria. The workbench was required to be tough, cheap to build (second hand or reclaimed materials are fine. It doesn't have to look pretty as pretty soon it is going to be trashed) and sturdy enough to take a beating without falling to bits.

I just bought a house, and am more of a mechanic than a wood worker, but would still love a strong, functional workbench to lay parts on etc. I've been studying up on videos for a few days, trying to get ideas on what I want to make, and this is by far the simplest video I've seen yet!

      The only thing I don’t like is the screws in the top of the ply.... he could’ve used a pocket jig to screw it from the bottom. Also, he went through the trouble of lap joining the top, then why not cut out the laps for shelves as well??

    • @MatzeMaulwurf
      @MatzeMaulwurf 2 роки тому

      @@43braden yes, same as i thought. The bench is great and well done! But I wouldn’t glue the top ply on it. And screw from beneath. But that’s a thing everybody can adjust as he she it likes. We are all capable of think by ourselves.

    Nice one Shane. A great, study workbench with really clear instructions. I made it pretty much like the video. I did use 30mm ply for the top which makes it a little more solid but also allowed me to screw it from below through the frame with 100mm screws (also recessed 15mm or so into the frame so the screws ran about 25mm into the ply) so that I didn't have screw heads showing / interrupting the smooth surface of the work top. Turned out really well. Thanks very much for all the ideas, Shane.

    Shane, mate, just wanted to say how good this video is. I used it 4 years ago to build my work bench, with the checkouts. Talk about strong joints. Since 2016 that bench has been stood on, bashed, hammered, belted, banged into walls (and cars... oops), you name it, and it's still as solid as the day it was made. Bloody good on ya cobber! Well Uncle Knacker, I am back to revisit this Awesome Video. Becoming entirely tired of the builder who constructs benches utilizing butt joints relying on screws or bolts to bear the weight of the boards. I built my first ever workbench a few years ago at my old apartment I. Biddeford, Maine. I have once again moved, requiring me to build another workbench. The joinery utilized here is phenomenally strong. I also intend to 3 May 2018, to build and overhead bin storage area atop the workbench. Thanks so much again, for posting this video. These joints are ridiculously strong. Lee From Norway,Maine.

    TIP: When using wood screws to join two pieces of wood together.
    Drill the pilot-hole in one piece of wood a tad wider than the diameter of the screw, so that it slides right through. Now offer up the second piece behind the first and clamp them together. The screw will pull that second piece of wood really tight ...no real need for glue. This works well with both hard and soft wood.

    Very nice and strong........ HOWEVER... You should never glue the top down to the frame. Screws are more than enough to hold that top down. If you ever need to replace that top because of damage or spills or whatever the case may be it will be much easier to remove it just by removing the screws. It would be a fiasco to remove it if it's glued down.

      I know you're just joking but in case someone else actually does have this concern, one of the first fun things to make for a new wood-working hobbyist is a pair of saw horses!
      Along with some kind of plyboard table top, that can serve as a temp (or maybe semi-permanent) work station for a while till you get your own table like this one, made up!

    I've watched at least a dozen videos on bench builds, yours was one of the best. Despite not using Imperial measurements I picked up some great tips. I have been accused of over building but now see there are others of the same persuasion. Would like to see more of your builds.

      G'day Thomas.....yeah mate, it's a pretty solid table. Mine is still going strong after many years of continual use. Thanks for taking the time to watch and for the feedback...very much appreciated. Just letting you know that the Plans that l supply have Imperial measurements as well as Metric. Cheers 👍👍

    Thanks Shane, I searched back to find this as I am going to make a folding bench that I can store but bring outside when a project is a bit dirty for the garage (I keep my vehicles in the garage and it’s a nuisance trying to keep it all clean ) I particularly like the post and rail build for strength. Cheers Uncle Knackers! Built this workbench over the weekend. It was my first woodworking project and it turned out great! I had to redo one of the leg checkouts as I didn't make enough cuts and was too rough with the chisel, easily fixed and that's how we learn right :)

    Great video just started building my mitre saw stand using this approach. I did the cutouts on all 4 of my legs at the same time, made it easier to keep the saw stable, and also faster. Also start the cuts from the end moving in I did it the other way the first time and it came out ugly much more stable cuts out to in. Thanks Shane!

    Hey Knackers, just wanted to let you know that a while back I used this design to build a set of shelves for the shed. I just ran the inside stick of the leg the full height and the outside piece spaced and supported the rails. We sold the house recently and I had to leave it there, it was a tank. The aliens will find it when they're searching through the rubble in a thousand years. They'll have to leave it too. Thanks mate, continuing to enjoy your videos and inspiration. Cheers!
