  • Since the last video i put up about fishing for Mackerel from the cliffs using helium I've been swamped with questions about how to do it in more detail. I've been trying to finish this video for some time now and on the last trip north we finally made it happen.

    As a teen I used to balloon with a mate at a place called Cape Liptrap (Vic). it was the only way we could get to deep water not having a boat. Great technique, especially on a Cape because you can move round with the wind a bit to keep it more or less straight out. Good shit - Thanks for sharing.

    The only extra baiting technique I do is run ghost cotton the entire length of the bait. Adds extra insurance when the bait is slapping hard on the water
    This is important on softer baits like gardies and sand mar
    Maybe not as important on hardy baits like a mullet. But still helps
    Great example of ballooning for those starting out

    I think you should try kite fishing. With a kite you can tack and place the bait exactly where you want it should the wind change. With a bottle of water to control the depth of the bait depending on the strength of the wind. One can also have a bigger/smaller kite to compensate for the strength of the wind. With a kite, you would not have stopped on that day. You would have changed the tack and viola! BTW, kites are easy to make if you know how to.

    • @DixonsFishing
      @DixonsFishing  2 роки тому

      Will have a look into kites. Haven’t seen them used before. The bait never actually sits in the water could you make a bait splash and drag across the surface while lifting out be landing back in it?? If the bait sits in the water sharks will eat it unfortunately.

    • @ebenengelbrecht2140
      @ebenengelbrecht2140 2 роки тому +1

      @@DixonsFishing Yes, you can, just open spool. I used to do it with a heavy rod and huge scarborough reel. Missed al lot of Kingies (or as we call them in South Africa "couta". Importance is that you can fish with wind parallel to coastline by tacking kite. Less water in the bottle can make the bait sit higher and splash, etc. Caught many smallish shark this way.

    Hi there - Firstly awesome vids - Excellent quality and very informative. Heading to Quobba in June 22 for 7 days, going to try ballooning for the first time so have been watching your vids very closely for tips and advice. I have a few questions.
    1. What Ib line do you recommend from the wire rig to the first swivel before the balloon? I was thinking 50lb tough line. I have a Sarogosa 20K with 60lb braid.
    2. What camera equipment do you use or recommend ?
    3. What size Rod and rating would recommend ?
    4. Have you tried chopper tailor rigged for ballooning?
    Love the footage - Keep it rolling mate -Your onto a good thing with this...

      Not for this style no. As they normally hitting a fast moving bait while they are moving fast you would miss a lot of hookups. I have seen guys use a circle as the very top hook to hook really large fish that swallow baits but I don’t think it’s needed.

    Hey bro epic vid
    Couple questions
    I noticed u used to use a trebble hook on last hook now uv gone single, have you found better hook up rate with all singles and no trebs?
    Also I hit the bkk link in description but what model 10/0 u recommend
    Live bait, octopus, bait hook ?
    Cheers bruh 👌

    • @DixonsFishing
      @DixonsFishing  2 роки тому +1

      Hey, treble is optional, can use either both work. I find the treble to hook smaller fish 8-10kg easier but where I was fishing and time of year they are normally 12-18kg commonly so can get away with the singles.
      These hooks are the 10/0 octopus. I’ll fix the link so it works correctly. Thanks heaps for watching and the feedback.

    Awesome fish boys, my only query/concern... How many of the balloons end up in the ocean? Are you able to retrieve them all, or are losses an inevitable outcome? If they do end up lost and becoming part of some poor bloody turtle or dolphin's unintentional diet, then I have to say please stop using them. There is enough crap polluting our world's oceans, without adding to the problem. I am a fisherman myself and I love to fish the ocean, streams and any other body of water I can, but I am so sick of cleaning up other people's shit. Old fishing line, plastic bags, fishing rigs, cans, bottles, ad nauseam. I know you don't do this, or at least don't appear to do it, however, I just wanted to be sure about the balloons and being sure there not becoming part of a massive problem. Cheers mate, apologies for the rant.

    • @RedemptionTackle
      @RedemptionTackle 2 роки тому +1

      fisherman's lost balloons are 0.0001 percent of the balloon pollution in the world - kids are more responsible for lost balloons in a day then all fisherman worldwide in a year
