  • As the bison meat industry grows, processors and marketers say they need more producers to help build the market. One major hurdle to recruiting ranchers: convincing them to handle animals that can grow to the size of a Mini Cooper. Photo: AP

    Pro tip:
If you are an athlete or are interested in bodybuilding/ working out, start eating bison beef. It has nutrients in it that naturally boost testosterone therefore making it easier to build muscle.

the problem is they are sometimes much more aggressive and if something spooks them to get stampeding in a herd no amount of electrical fence will stop them. also they consume much more grass than cows do a require much more land. Bison can't be factory farmed(good) because part of the reason they have a distinguishable flavor is because the muscle they build up and use often when travelling long distances over many miles sometimes. it's a bit more than just throwing some in a field with cattle. I'm not an expert on this but the process is a lot more involved than what I know and what I can say in a comment.

If you raise them yourselves you'll have calm animals. They do not eat more grass than cows. If you manage them they don't have to range so far. I have 640 acres, (divided into 3 x240 fully fenced acres) and a 35 Acre field for growing feed.. A family can feed 50 animals in winter on hay grown on 35 acre field. While it is growing they graze first and second area, then strip graze the field. Each area has spring fed ponds or a all year creek.

Yeah people don't understand how dangerous it is just to work with semi tame cattle when you got a 1000pd+ animal that gets spooked and run overs you it kinda hurts.

I wish I owned South Dakota. I would fill it with bison and invite Sioux and other Plains Indians in to help manage them.

There's already indigenous owned bison herds but those are isolated on reservations where they are raised to feed the tribe and help improve overall health as many people on reservations suffer from diabetes do to foods thier stomachs can't digest properly such as wheat and sugar. Other than feeding the reservation they are all introduced for spiritual purposes even though many native people are Christian they still have ceremonies.
Because of the newly introduced bison the reservations have seen more plant and animal diversity.
The pine ridge reservation in South Dakota began a business of selling bison meat bars.

My daughter so time ago brought me buffalo meat; I loved it. It has a slightly sweet flavor and so lovely lean. But being "Buffalo Gal" how could I not love buffalo meat and all of the buffalo's history - which was tragic. It is very good meat and does not shrink up when cooked. Well worth the money.
