  • Conservationists in the US state of Montana are creating an "American Serengeti" by buying up ranch land, pulling down fences and creating a vast swathe of territory for bison to roam.
But ranchers are opposed to the idea saying it is a threat to their communities and their livelihoods.
    Alastair Leithead reports.

do those people not understand the concept of irony?
bison cannot be destructive in that environment, because they and the environment evolved together- they are presumably a key stone species there as well. The plants, the other animals, all evolved to live alongside the bison in a symbiotic manner.
those ranchers, they came, they destroyed, they complain that they need to be preserved

The very fear of loss of culture is ironic when, in the late 1800s, the bison were deliberately decimated to force indigenous people onto reserves. And Bison help ensure that ecosystem is healthy. This report fails to represent that kind of research (which is out there) and the multi-century-old knowledge of Indigenous knowledge keepers (which is also out there)

Are you serious? Native Americans were there thousands of years and they lost that land to the people you say are loosing your land. The natives were displaced, lost their community, culture and language. Really, get it in prospective!

The rancher talks of "a culture over 100 years old". The bison were there much longer. People want to see the open prairie and they come to see it. They will come to see the bison. No one is going to go "hungry". I wonder how the Indians felt when the ranchers destroyed their culture. These ranchers are all about themselves with little historical perspective. We can eat bison. Don't be afraid.

Within the APR they have 40,000+ head of cattle (source needed, I heard this somewhere). And they're worried about a few hundred bison.

    Opinion:
Sell your ranch and they can make it into whatever they want. It's theirs. If you want it, buy it. Or blame the sell outs. It's true it's been the way it is for a couple of hundred years but some of us are smart enough to know it's time to put it back the way it was before for thousands of years. An attempt at "fixing" what we have broken. And to be real, the "culture" in Montana is pretty bland. Some good and necessary Bison hunts would be great and add much to the state.

SawHappy if you want "to put it back the way it was before thousands of years," then you gotta give up your own house cause I'm pretty sure the property you're on belonged to the Natives.

Bison lived on the land for tens of thousands of years and were quite sustainable by just living ( funny how they are perfectly adapted to prairie the prairie ecosystem). Beef is one of the most inefficient land vs. calorie food production methods on the planet. AND unhealthy to boot ( ever hear of heart disease? ). Beef ranching will be illegal long before the bison die out. Bison are more American than cowboys. Yippee Ka yay MF er! UNSUSTAINABLE is the beef industry.
    Bison > Beef
100 years of tradition.? I wonder if the Bison cultures of the first nations peoples ( had more years of traditional bison use? WAYYYYYY more than 100 years by my math. Do ranchers believe in maths?
In what way is preserving bison destroying ranching? Is it taking away free grazing lands that they previously wanted all to themselves? One would think ranchers would like Bison being so close to cows and all...

    • @gildone84
      @gildone84 3 роки тому

Beef doesn't cause heart disease. That idea is based on flawed science: epidemiological/correlation studies, which are wrong 80% of the time. Heart disease didn't exist before 1900. It's a disease of sugar and processed food.

First I heard of this and I live in North Dakota. Grew up in western north Dakota.
Some areas of North Dakota and Montana are farm land and some areas are grazing grass land called pasture. Normally small family farms would have the number of cows based on grazable pasture and farm the rest of the land. Easy of the Missouri River land is very rich like in eastern north Dakota Minnesota and Iowa. You can farm the land without any or much fertilizer. In western north Dakota and Montana and Wyoming the land isn't always as fertil and is better for grazing on grass. You can farm the land but you will have to fertiliz. That is why lots of ranches traditionally have been located in Montana to Texas and new Mexico.
Family farms and family ranches are dieing off and large family farms are turning into corporations. There are large tracks or grass land already set aside for wild life in western north Dakota and Montana all these people want to do is buy up private land between the state and federal lands so wildlife has a larger connected area. The only drama is if farm and ranch land get turned into private owned nature preserve then what will keep the small towns economy going. Eastern Montana is already 1 of the lowest populated places in America. 50 years ago you could see a farmhouse light at night every couple miles but not anymore.

The bison were there before your families stole the land. Now you think it belongs to you because you stole it fair and square. Turn about is fair play. They are taking the land back. The Most High God is in charge of this return. When the bison come back, so will the native Americans. Lol

Is there anything the public can do to help this Bison preserves? These are amazing ideas. I’m glad they want to put Bison back on the grasslands. If they stop thinking selfishly they will see Bison are needed for the environment. && don’t they know we can live off Bison. I’d replace the bison with the cattle honestly.

What about farming bison on the open range. It would be both scenic and economically viable. I would imagine that grass fed bison would be a healthy substitute for beef.
It would also be a better defence against the hysteria of the “ Wild Mustang” crowd.

because they only care about the money rather than money AND habitat. Being a good steward can bring all benefits. That used to be common sense. Unfortunately many ranchers seem to think about themselves and any questioning results in 'who raises your beef' attitude. I used to be a staunch rancher supporter but it's shortsighted.
