It is crazy that they accidentally threw out the whole set of the old house when they moved from one studio to the other and then had to quickly reconstruct it!
We have a museum here called the Campbell House. It had a back staircase for the servants to use. Also it had a bell call system, where if someone wanted something they would pull a tasseled cord and in the s servants area a panel with bells attached for each labeled room would start ringing. It was neat. The servants also had their own rooms to stay in on the second floor.
There had to be a second set of stairs connecting all levels of the house including the basement - the servant's stairs, so that they could be inconspicuous. Maybe hidden doors meant to look like wall paneling too. I love the subject of secret rooms, and the room behind the bookcase! I'm also fascinated with the winding stair case to the "room with a view of the sea." When Barnabas and David met and talked about the sunrise in that room in the Old House it was the moment I really started to feel compassion for Barnabas, despite how cruel he was in that initial time period.
Didnt the basement have secret tunnels to the sea. The ghost of Sarah helped Maggie escape that way.

I know of three secret passage ways in the old house. Barnabas loved sunrises...
