The sheer scarcity and sophistication of that tool kinda reinforces my notion that any half-decent disc tumbler lock is better than any pin tumbler lock, though.
100%, I've been learning and practising picking recently, pin tumblers are pretty basic for me at this point but I haven't been able to crack a disc detainer yet. Granted I don't have the special pick but I do have a basic pick for disc detainers.
Nickel is magnetic. Along with iron and cobalt. Also the nickel coating may have been thick. The only lock picking experience i have is ordering a lock picking set from the internet, however I know my metals Damn I sound like an ass
I can see why you lockpick, I have picked my first masterlock in the back of a truck that was turning a lot with only paper clips. I was on a 10 minute timer to make the picks out of the paper clips and pick it, not to mention it was on something heavy so hard to move around. Overall it was very fun, and it makes me want to invest in real lockpicks and harder locks.
I recently bought two stainless steel 'resysta' Gerda padlocks (50mm and 30mm). The keyways look quite roomy, but the pins are pointed, so pretty tricky to pick as most of my picks slip off the tip of the pins (except the sparrows hook with the dimple on the tip -but that won't fit around the warding on all 6 pins on the 50mm and won't even fit in the keyway on the 30mm). So Im very impressed with them both as general casual use medium security locks
It's easy in theory. In practice, security pins and tricky warding make many licks a real bear to open. Remember, you're watching one of the best lockpickers in the world working under ideal conditions. In practice, something like this might be enough to convince any would-be thief that the next storage locker and its Master No. 3 would be an easier target.

I feel like gerda contracted a company called "Secure" to make this. The core is exactly the same as the "secure" branded disc detainer locks I find at the dollar store. They also make Master No. 3 rip offs that are actually laminated WARDED locks.
Depends on the price. Gerda has a line of low-security 'budget' products, besides the 'extra-secure' ones. And even a very basic disc detainer lock will stop most amateur thieves.
@@Anonymouspock We do see more of it. Nickel plating is not that rare. It's just like chrome plating but not quite as shiny. And possibly more durable depending on conditions. Protects the underlying metal from corrosion. Not really necessary for brass so here it must be more of an aesthetic choice. Chrome plating is still more common though because some people are allergic to nickel.

Years ago Gerda had some nice, good quality products, on par with another polish producer, LOB (now part of Assa Abloy, unfortunately). Some time ago, however, I believe mid 2000, they either started outsourcing production or selling branded products, because quality dropped significantly since then. Now I don't recommend their products, whether padlock, lock or doors, except one product. It is the reminder of "good old days" - TYTAN ZX lock, very good quality, massive lock. We had two of them installed on garage doors (without weather cap) and one of them rusted. We had to cut doors to gain access... Bosnianbill tried opening one, he didn't beat it. Maybe you could give it a try?
Ive never picked a lock in my life, and dont think i ever will, but i still find ypur videos really interesting. Im just curious if you close your eyes when you pick locks.
I didn't see anything on the website stating it was nickle plated brass. Just that it had a "nickel plated body". Or in the case of this particular model "Massive nickel plated body"
I have a Chinese shed lock, guarding only a mower, that is exactly the same as this but 'brass' , the brass has rust spots on it , at least the keys are stainless.
There's a trailer hitch lock here in Australia made by BiLock. But it's only 6 pins instead of 12 and it's still not cheap. Abloy Protec has a good rep but they're very expensive.
It's really more of a combination lock, if that makes sense. It just has a lot more dials with fewer positions, and operated by a key instead of manually lining up the dials.
@@xganterx Indeed it would, i have a tiny vertical gym locker padlock and a huge ass class 4 shipping container lock with their old core, it is an incredible hassle to use just cause of the difficulty aligning the key right to go inside
LPL, while I have no doubt you are a highly talented picker, I’d like to see these picks in an environment the locks would be used. I ask only because some locks may be more difficult or impossible while in use. On the workbench you may have an advantage not available in use.
And that’s the point I’m trying to make. While on a hasp he would have a similar approach but on my gang box at work I think picking would be much more difficult.
I'm Polish, and i've laughed. That's a good one. And about intelligence - we have many top-tier thinkers in Poland. But still ordinary citizens, fell for a new trends of stupid being cool and easy. That's sad, but it's like that.
I looks like this lock has the weakness of all the early DD Chinese cores; you can lever off the core retainer disk with a screwdriver. Does it have the bypass able plastic actuator too?
The consensus seems to be that they are cheaply made in China now. There's a comment a few up from this one of yours that mentions what they're been doing in the past few years.
Hey LPL, I've wondered about the security by obscurity of this disc deteiners locks, since just you and Bill have the adequate tools for picking it, what are the chances of someone picking one of those without them? I have one cheap chinese copy of that feature on the video on my bike
Hey, nice take on a Gerda lock! I'd want to ask you something, though. Do you think you would be able to get your hands on a Gerda Tytan ZX Plus? I've been using this lock for well over 15 - 20 years now and I've never had any problem with it. I was always wondering if this lock could be picked in any way. I'd really love that, thanks!
Truth is.... how many purple could pick a disk detainer lock? Even cheapo ones take a moderate amount of skill. That lock looks nice and beefy with its 70mm body and 12mm shackle. Out would be enough to put most people off.
Hi LPL, just a question, if the lock has say, 6 discs that need picking and you are using disc 1 to tension the core why do you not have to pick that first disc? I hope it’s not a stupid question
I'm looking for a gym locker lock, I just got broken into with a dolor store letter turny lock. I'm ready to upgrade guys, what's the safest lock for a gym locker room lock? I was considering a HYT Chain Key... Thank you all.

To be honest any lock that takes you more than 30 seconds to pick I consider to be decent at this point! lol
Hearing those tumblers go "click" is like watching a chiropractic video. No wonder I'm addicted to these vids.

No, you don't.
Nickel doesn't dissolve into copper, that's one of the reasons why it is used in ENIG platings (copper -> nickel -> gold).
Nah man. Not at all. I had no idea nickel is magnetic. I would have bet money and my first born that is wasn’t.

How do the keys compare to other Gerda locks you have? That may be a clue to whether or not the lock is made by them or came out of China.

It really seems like a Chinese knockoff of the real Gerda padlock. I wonder whether Gerda knows about it.
Pretty sure this was a Chinese bootleg
well remember he's using a custom disk detainer pick. few thieves would have something like that. only a real pro would.
Nice video, as always! I love your channel, LPL!
I should note that nickel is actually one of the three common ferromagnetic materials, the other two being iron, and cobalt.
But why would you make something out of nickel? It doesn't strike me as being cheaper, otherwise we would see more of it.

The' brass' is probably paint. The cheaper Chinese ones are pot metal painted to look like brass.
I have one. I thought that it was better than others padlocks because of the higher price 😉
Lock picking lawyer I want to see you picking abloy disc detainer lock those are my favorite padlocks.
The Protec II? I've only seen one person do that. And he made a special tool to do it.
This is the Lockpicking Loooouyouuur
Ok. So I have seen a few videos on padlocks and trailer locks if they are all crap what does a person buy? Is there any recommendations? Please?

Disc detainer is just a fancy lever lock
It's really more of a combination lock, if that makes sense. It just has a lot more dials with fewer positions, and operated by a key instead of manually lining up the dials.
Can you please try to get ahold of a finnish ABLOY lock? The older version, the keys are half circle shaped
That would be interesting.
Its called Abloy Classic.

The consensus seems to be that they are cheaply made in China now. There's a comment a few up from this one of yours that mentions what they're been doing in the past few years.
You must try gerda zircon or lob tantal and i think not only pick but try to open forcefully

Is there any chance you could do a video showing the different kinds of key locks? I.e. pins, disc detainers, dimples, etc?
