Welcome to the first episode in a new quick build series where I recreate the famous M577 APC from the 1986 movie ‘ALIENS’. This build will be 3D printed in 1/24 scale with rotating wheels, movable turrets and a full interior. Enjoy.

Staples and Vine? You know - that guy who only creates the most awesome models that you always wanted to have! Serious mate, you absolutely always choose my favourite models and then you just upgrade them to v. 2.0. Thanks for sharing!
Thanks, that's very kind of you. I'm just working through the 'Cool stuff list'....
Just found this playlist and the first episode is great. I was never able to get a hold of the Halcyon kit of the APC but I'd love to build one of these! Fantastic idea using magnets for the turret and wheels.
Looking forward to watching the other episodes 👍
Great to have you on board. I hope you enjoy the other builds on my channel, check out my Slave 1 sometime. 🙂
Saw Aliens the first day it came out at the Odien Lecester Square, the filming original was on the street out the front of the Cinema. It rally was a beast.
Wow! that must have been awesome to see the original APC. Such a shame it is no more.... 😭
You definitely must do the dropship! This would be the perfect compliment to the APC.
@@dezell2126 it WILL happen. I have to finish the MILANO first though. 🙂
The iconic vehicle no model company realy wants to take on for some reason ..... this build will clearly be something to watch .
Sadly I think these days the kids only want ornithopters.... 🙄
I think I have a theory as to why model companies don't make movie vehicles. Movie model makers often use parts of commercially available model kits for detailing and greeblies. So. They could be reproducing another model companies work.
Nice, another great idea for a make on a classic SciFi movie ❤
Another build. Another rabbit hole.... 😁
Beauty & the Beast.
Well done.
You're a good narrator too.
Thank you, that's very kind. I hope you enjoy the rest of my channel. 🙂
This in 1/16 and RC would seriously be on my shopping list….’Aliens’ is in my top two Sci-Fi movies, and being an RC tank collector I would pay serious money for it….can’t wait for the next video!
Mindreader.... You won't be disappointed. 🙂
There IS a free printable RC model of this online somewhere, I don't remember exactly but a general search should find it.
And to this very day, these three design concepts still hold up.
Yes, they certainly nailed it. They haven't dated at all in almost 40 years. 😮 That makes me feel old.... 🤣
@@StaplesandVine not only have they not dated, but they STILL look futuristic. The artists responsible for design on this movie were on the A Game.
Syd Mead, absolute genius.
@@hammerofdavey
Pretty dreadful as an APC though.
Wow…where is the engine and drivetrain?
I love sci-fi interior layouts. Zero space for engines, systems, equipment, storage , etc.
... and no bathrooms 😮 'In space, no one can hear you pee!' 😕
@@StaplesandVine lol perfect!
awesome work !
Thank you. 🙂
Excellent work and I can tell you have put the effort in because of the passion you have. Looking forward to building my own
Thanks for the great comment. 'Simple' models are harder to hide the errors as there's no detail to distract. It's worth making the effort to get it right.
Its hilarious that you mentioned those two books, as i just had to literally look up my shelf and see both of them side by side. The blueprint book in particular is a MUST HAVE for Aliens collectors. Going to be watching this with great interest, as the APC is one of my favorite sci-fi vehicles ever made. I think lighting it up is also an absolute must, at least the outer lights and driver's cabin.
Ahhh... a dedicated fan! 😎 It looks like I will be adding lighting unless I want a very large fleshy egg for Easter... 😟
WOW ! you are an artist. It's wonderful and your video's are always a pleasure to watch. Thank you
Thank you, that is very kind. The videos take a long time to make because I always try and build my models and create my videos to the highest standard I can...
"Game over man!"
Loved this movie. Really looking forward to seeing the APC come to life. How about doing one of the Babylon 5 ships. There is a huge range of ones to pick from ie the Shadow ships or an EarthForce Omega Class Destroyer 😊.
Good call on Bab5. I always liked the StarFury.
@@StaplesandVine ooo good choice.
Love that you ensured a good fit by incorporating alignment pins.
Thank you that comes from experience. I try and make my models 'robust'. 🙂
Very cool !!!
Thank you, new episode next week. 🙂
You skipped counting rivets and went straight to counting tread blocks !
Excellent work and excellent video. Looking forward to seeing it in person 😊
Thanks James, tread blocks are certainly easier to count. 😁
Game over man! Game over!
'Express elevator to hell, going down...'
"We're doomed di di da da".
A play on words call-back to STRIPES, grunts out of their league😉
I have the Halcyon kit (and the powerloader and Dropship), and the Aliens technical data book.
I bought the models in the 1990s, and my older brother bought me the book (and 'Gigers Alien').
Sounds like you have ALIENS in your genes - 😎😎😁
Ok - I'm fished in (subscribed) and waiting for the next episode. Now, that 1/24 scale......GI Joe figures????? 🤔
Thanks for subscribing - much appreciated. 1/24 scale figures will be 75 mm tall but the APC has a VERY cramped interior. ( much as any APC) Not sure what size GI joe figures are. 🤔
I love it 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Thank you... 😎😎😎
I love this movie so much. Well done.
Thank you. A shame they don't make them like that anymore... 😕
This is my favorite movie of all time. I saw this movie when it first came out in the 80s . I love scale modeling , I always want to build these vehicles in the movie. Good job I need the files.😂
Spoken like a true fan. 😎 The files will be available at the end of the build. 🙂
Absolutely amazing. Want to print one in 1/35. One tip - drop parts with support to boiling/ hot water. Supports comes apart almost without any force
Thank you, I'll check out your support removal tip. 😎
I agree. I always soak mine in hot water and the supports just come right off. Then a scrub with toothbrush and dish soap
the cargo handler is over the top amazing..Looks like it was built by Caterpillar.
That is a very cool piece of kit... and in my favourite colour 🙂
"But it's a dry heat man"
These were always some of my favorite vehicles as a kid searched for years to find the model kits.........ran across one by accident in an old hobby shop back in college........Definitely needs a dropship to go with........Prop Store had one of the original model dropships for sale recently for reference and painting.........on tested .....
Original full size APC was designed around a 747 aircraft towing vehicle vehicle.
A drop ship is certainly on the cards. Same scale as the APC. 😎
I love this channel, please do lighting!
Thanks, glad you like my vids. I'm not looking forward to lighting but... gotta be done.🥴
This is awesome! Can't wait for the next episode.
Thank you, glad you like the build. don't worry, I'm on it. 🙂
Awesome video, I enjoyed it greatly. Thanks for the upload.
Thanks, glad you liked it. Episode #2 coming soon.
THIS is GREAT!!!!!! Thank you so much for the vid!!
You're welcome. I'm currently working on the CAD for the gunners seat. It's looking good. Trying to get a vid out for next week. 🙂
Great work mate, can't wait to see it complete!!! Would love to see lighting on it.
Thanks Steven, it looks like I am adding lighting. 🥴
Please do the dropship next. This is one of my favourite movies
That's the plan... Again in 1/24. 😎
@@StaplesandVine Excellent, I love a big model! The dropship is a pretty big machine, I found a basic model on thingiverse and upped it a little to 1:72 scale going off dimensions in the Tech Manual - its the best part of a foot long. You got a sub, best of luck with it all.
I would love to see a 1/35th Dropship and I think I downscale version of the APC to go with the Dropship... I would still buy the 24th scale as well just because it's amazing
Don't get me wrong... I would love to see a 24th scale Dropship....but I can imagine the cost would be huge
The beauty of 3D printing is you can scale stuff up and down to suit the size / scale you want to print at. 🙂
Oh and certainly your secret plan is to scale the dropshop to fit this badboy. What a beast that 1:24 dropship will be!!
Yes indeed, a 1/24 dropship as well. 😎
A perfect project! Really good work and inspiring. Cant wait to see the interior.
Thank you for the great comments. I'm working on the interior now. A new video coming soon. 🙂
Whoa....
Drive system is the toughest part to "Square" w/. 🤔.
I guess, between the box object behind the front turret & the hubs serve as propulsion. 1 of the lines in the movie was "the torque converters are fried. That said, this is a GR8 vid, way fab! Kudos & many thanx 👍👍
One thing I have learned about Sci-Fi ships / vehicles is that the designs do not make any practical sense. On the APC drawings the motors are described as in the wheels. Glad you like the vid. 🙂
Excellent work sir.
Thank you, that's very kind. 🙂
Cool build . Thank you for sharing your project
Thanks, glad you like it. The interior is coming on well. New video soon. 🙂
I'd love to see someone take an actual model kit of a Hunslet ATT77 and convert it to the M577 🤘😎
That would be quite a challenge... 😎
11:34 - Of course it will. I wouldn't have expected anything less. :)
It would have been too easy otherwise... 😁
Wonderful work!! Is there a chance you will make it available to everyone? Also for sale of course. A thousand thanks
Looking for to seeing the finished product. Your call a little weathering would be cool.
It needs some weathering but not too much that will be a challenge in it's own right.
Damn! You did some stellar work! Would you mind to share that model?
Thanks, still a lot to do but the files will be available to but when the build is complete. 🙂
Great project, well done video and narration. Thanks
Thanks, that's kind. Check out my Slave 1 build to see more of what I get up to. 🙂
This is absolutely stunning model. Insane details. I wish to own something like that in the future. PS: This looks like HIYA toys APC but even more accurate.
Thank you, all my own work. It will give modellers a good starting point to make something even more special. 🙂
design also features variable height suspension ! Problem was interior space would be tiny , not nearly as big inside as film interiors . I built a Halcyon , back in the day , and the turret rolls back to stowed position
There are a lot of novel design features about the APC that are very hard to make work in the real world today but in the future... who knows? 🙂
If you did a 1/12 scale those NECA Aliens figures would look awesome with it. I hope you put your 3D model on thingiverse. great work!
Thank you. The files will be available through my website once the build is finished. They can be scaled up and printed at any size. 🙂
Nice, it looks legit
Thank you 🙂
Subbed for childhood dreams come true...
Hopefully no nightmares.... 😁

@@StaplesandVine
They mostly come at night...Mostly. I recorded the audio from vcr. And listened to it on my walkman. Many lines got hardwired in my brain. I can visualize the entire movie. Have not seen it for two decades, no need. 😄 I own a 1:1 face hugger amongst other Alien collectibles. A true fandom🤓👍
😎😎😎😎 I got a pulse rifle, just in case... 😮
Buckle up guys! The 4K release is coming in late April!!!!!!!
Excellent..... 😎😎😎😎
Got hooked in this video and now I'm a subscriber. 😊
Excellent, thank you for subscribing. I'm currently doing the CAD work for Gorman's screens and console. New episode soon. 🙂
What a great video. I had to follow you. I can't wait for the next part to come out. This is some great work.
Thank you for subscribing. There's lots of great content still to come. 😎
This is beyond awesome !!! can't wait to see the final work, but if i may have a suggestion: how about us poor people who don't have the MAX 3 but still want this in 1:24 scale? maybe you could separate the pieces a little more so they can fit in a Anycubic Mono X ;) hehehe, also, are you thinking about putting some lights in the back? because in the movie the APC has 2 bluish lights in the back. Congratulations on another fantastic work !!
Thanks for the great comment. Today is your lucky day... I printed both parts of the APC hull at the same time on my M3 MAX but they can be printed individually on a MONO X, still in 1/24 scale. The files will be available when the build is finished. I will also be adding lighting - not looking forward to that stage.... 😕
@@StaplesandVineThat's fantastic !! also, y believe that it would be a good idea to have the choice that the wheels don't move...
Superglue is optional... 😁
The APC has a way larger role in the Aliens versus Predator (2001) video game. And it's a beast of battle. It holds back 6-10 Xenomorphs per side like nobody's business. It must be an asset in the game. GoG tends to have a lot of the older games :3
Thanks, I'll check that out, sounds interesting... 🙂
You could have used a strip of metal for the main turret, that way you could have it move from the stowed away position to firing position.
Nice build!
Thanks for the suggestion. The turret does run on rails which I am yet to make. 🙂
I would like this stl!
When the build is complete the files will be available through my website. 🙂
Just wow. Can’t Walt to see the final result !
Thank you, interior video next Friday... 🙂
This is fantastic !
Thank you. Plenty more to come. 🙂
@StaplesandVine great job. Will you please share the STL? I had the Halcyon kit many ages ago and I wish I’d kept it.
Thank you, once the build is complete the files will be available through my website. 🙂
Yes please lighting
Given all the comments I think I will get a large egg for Easter if I don't add lighting... 😟
Cool work. I always struggle with where the engine would go. Perhaps there are electric motors in each wheel hub. Then, where would the batteries go. I guess I should do some reading first.
Thank you. The concept in the Blueprints book is that the motors are in the wheels and the batteries are in the rear of the main hull. 🙂
Bigger to hold the neca figures!
You will be able to print the files at any scale when they are released through my website. 🙂
Do lights! it makes all the Difference!
Looks like I don't have a choice here... Lights it is. 😀
@@StaplesandVine Yeah, Lights brings Models to Life. Great Build so far!
This is stunning pal. I fell straight back to the 80’s watching this and have now subscribed. I’m looking forward to the rest and going back to look at your old stuff. Will the stl files eventually become available for purchase like your slave 1?
Hi, glad you liked the vid and thanks for subscribing. YES, the files will be available so you can build the ultimate APC. 🙂
Hello modellmate. The dropship is called cheyenne. With sticky greetings.christian
Hi Christian, thanks for the comment, hope you like the channel and episode 2. 🙂
As an APC, this vehicle is absurd. But as a model it will be a treat.
I totally agree but it does look very 😎😎😎😎
i love your work and i will purchase the S1, now, this may be a stretch but, i love modeling and im a beginner modeling for 3d print. is there any possibility you would share even more guidance on how to model these accurate models for us who want to make the attempt to follow your path but only for the exterior. Obviously not showing, not detailing the interior parts , since that would be reserved for the purchased complete model. Maybe it could attract even a bigger audience make a bigger buzz and create a base for potential clients for the full versions, just an idea. Also a suggestion for a beautiful plane that not many have made truly accurate versions of, the stunning SU-27. Cheers
Hi, thanks for the great comment. I'll only be selling the full set of stls files for the APC. It can of course be built with or without the interior. There will also be a second set of files included. Check out episode 2 for more information. I do like the Su-27 but have a long list of other models I need to do first. 🙂
@@StaplesandVine I understand, i was taking a chance,, still good to hear you are showing us more about your process modeling and printing, i will follow EVERY episode of it . Regarding the SU-27, the swan-like sukois, i think the 27, 29 etc (not the 35, there they changed the lines a bit) are the most beautiful jet designs ive ever seen, second to non. Cheers
The Cybertruck should look more like this.
Put a bucket on the front, a wheelbarrow on the roof and paint it green - job done. 😁
ALIENS are the one of few movies that shaped my estheticks about futuristic mechadesign - saw it probably 7 times at cinema as a teenager.
And I have to admitt that this is one brilliant model with awsome engenireeng of magnet usage but...
... but you forgot about one thing to be screen acurate. The suspention hight.
Otherwise it's great... I wish there was so acurate model in 1/144 scale... ...best regards (--_+)
Thanks for the great comment, glad you like my APC build. Hopefully it will be finished soon. 🙂
Fun fact. The tractors where built at Leeds in the UK and where at that time was the most powerful torque to weight ratio.of any wheeled vehicle.
Thanks for sharing that, they were quite powerful beasts! I know that they had to take 30 tons of lead out of the one used for filming and reinforce the floor it ran on. 🙂
I've seen one done with working TV screens, and team health monitors.
Yes, so have I. It looks amazing but not enough screens. Mine won't be moving just illuminated. 🙂
Aliens is my favourite movie and the apc awesome, will you be releasing the files for others to print at home?
Yes indeed the files will be available to purchase through my website. 🙂
Great video, I also plan to build an apc but I do want to have it full RC with 4ws so an interior probably wont fit. I plan on haviing around a 320mm wheel base but havent looked at what scale that would be, im guessing a bit larger than your build. I do have access to a printer and will hopefully be getting a Bambu x1c in the near future however I did actually plan to build this with styrene but 3D priinting may be a better option. I will be following your build thanks again. Any tis and trics are always welcome as I am a newb to scratch buildiing.
You may be very interested in phase 2 of this build after the 1/24 model is finished... In the meantime check out some of my 'HOW TO...' videos for 3D printing and modelling advice. 🙂
You should also print some "humans" for the scaling effect...
Already in hand... 🙂
Hi Sera, this is right up my street. I love the film and always wished the apc was in it more. Any chance you’re going to make a drop ship for it to go into 😁. Either way it’s going to look the business when it’s done
Hi Bob, glad you enjoyed the vid. I went 1/24 so I could make the dropship in the same scale... A future build coming after the APC🙂
I'd pay money for your version...100%
The files will be for sale through my website when the build is finished. 🙂
Separate the tire and wheel? Can print in a soft compound for tires and hard for wheels?
Just a thought.
That is a plan for further down the line but you will have to wait a while for all to be revealed...😁
Would love to see Sulaco.
YES, that will come after the dropship. 🙂
@@StaplesandVine you are doing wonderful videos. I liked and subbed.
impressive, never seen anyone fill an M3Max build plate with a successful print. the body came out very well with no warping as the two parts went together with almost no gap. but I don't understand why you resorted to filler? the surface looked pretty good from the video?
Thank you for the great comment. Resin printing can become problematic as you print larger items. Check out my HOW TO...PART 8 video for a lot of hints and tips. ua-cam.com/video/LS4oMb4bz68/v-deo.htmlsi=nqtrX94cUG1xFNNi I am going for a high end build so almost everything gets filled. 🙂
Another great build : ) are you making it 1/24 so it can fit in the drop ship ?
Thanks, yes indeed, that's the plan.... 😁 but there is also another stage. ( not a 1/24 SULACO - 😊)
very nice
Thank you. 🙂
It's the Tardis of APC's.
So true... 🤣🤣🤣
Amazing :) is this the one we have seen on facebook with full interrior ?
No that's not mine. That is an amazing build but a bigger model. 🙂
Will you ever offer the STL's for sale? I visited Pinewood in 1985 and remember seeing the APC before it was painted - it was a very impressive vehicle.
Yes, the STLs will be available once the build is complete. Check out episode 2 for a full explanation. The files will be announced for sale here on my channel first so subscribe to stay in the loop. 🙂
Just a bit of Trivia... There just maybe a slim chance that the APC was built on or very near Gerry Anderson's Century21 Studios. And just around the corner from C21 they built Americas Iconic Le Man Winner the GT40 Mk1-Mk3.
That's very interesting, thank you. It seems to be a prime location for great design. 🤔😎
@@StaplesandVine I was the guy who built the first power loader, who I found out upon it's release at the ToyFair in Olympia..... Halcyon were trying to find to build the master. Another missed opportunity..
Sometimes the stars just don't align... Back then Halcyon was the best available (and only). I heard tales of frantic repairs to the loader during shooting as they wanted retakes - very stressful.
To be clear, model power loader :) Quite a bit of controversy over the loader as Martin Bower (Nostromo, Refinery and Narcissus) said it was lifted from one of his designs.. Are you a fan of Mechwarrior by any chance.....I have a 3D model of a Catapult you mat find interesting..
Very nice! What resin printer are you using?
Thank you, I'm using an Anycubic M3 MAX. 🙂
I do believe I saw this finished model on a Twitter/X feed a couple weeks ago. I assume it is yours as there was a full interior with monitors and lighting. But, assuming isn't truth unless someone else confirms. So, I will either have you confirm here or when you complete it and let us all see.
If not, no big deal. If so, I want this set/files as soon as humanly possible!!! lol
I saw that post too, an amazing project but it wasn't my build. This one is all my own work and will feature lighting. The files will be available to buy through my website when the project is complete. Subscribing and following the build is the best way of keeping in the loop for when the files are available. 🙂
@@StaplesandVine Nice, thank you for responding. There is nothing but brilliance and accuracy in this and I for one am in. Really a great job so far!
I enjoyed to watch your process…just wandered ,where you can find the blueprint of this vehicle???
Glad you enjoyed the video. There's a link in the description to the book I used. 🙂
❤😉👍
😊😊😊
Awesome work! will the model be available to purchase? thanks.
Thank you, and YES the files will be available to buy through my website once the build is complete. 🙂
@@StaplesandVine Great to hear! ❤️
cool project
and can you make a jaeger drone cuz no one made kit for it yet,i'm looking for it
Thanks, maybe one day, I like cool stuff. 😎
I have the Halcyon APC and Dropship models; instant sub. :)
Thanks for subscribing that's great. The Dropship will be next. Just finished the CAD for the interior... 🥴
So, some rescaling of commercially available 3d files then!
Mine are all designed from scratch. I went down the commercially available route with Slave 1. Ended up totally re-designing the model when I found all the errors - not going there again.
@@StaplesandVine Too right - save your efforts for that P1 submarine from Marine Boy (hint hint)!
will this monster have any "Acid Splash" battle damage :)
It would be cool but probably not given the plans I have to display it... 🤔😎
Dropship next??
Yes indeed.... 😎
Let me guess re the master plan - a 1/24 Dropship as well?
Oh yes... 😎 but also....
Very nice looking model! Do you ever sell your STLs (or give them away?)
Also, as a suggestion. If you separate the threads from the hub you can then print the treads in flexible resin or TPUY if you have access to an FDM printer.
Thanks for the great comment, check out episode 2 for your answers. ... 🙂
For an armored car, it has a very low landing! He won't drive over rough terrain ! Clearly not for minefields ! MRAP to help you!
Sci Fi logic is bonkers. At least they will get blown up in a very cool looking vehicle. 🙃
