In the 1996 i was in electronics school. We had an electronics job fair and a music/stereo shop that did repairs came and set up a bose home theater system. It had like an 8inch sub and four little 4inch speakers. My reaction was the same as yours. I couldnt believe that i could feel and hear cello and horns highs and lows all together but crystal clear. A lot of ppl do not like Bose but i think bose audio is great.

I would like to add an info. Sometimes the devices are already updated and the led is still lightning red. So, there is an advanced mode on this BOSE UPDATER, which works like this - do the same steps you have done before and when the soundlink is connected just press - ADV and after the UP and DOWN arrows. The system starts again to update the firm software, despite the soundlink has already been updated. And magic!!! It works again!!!! Thanks for your video! It has helped me a lot as well!!

The AUX connection is just analog audio like your headphones that would plug into the CD player. There is no possible way the Bose can pause/skip or otherwise control the cd player. It just muted the audio when you pushed the middle button.
When paired to the phone it actually does control, which is nice. Nice video! :)

Vince, just as an FYI, the "big speakers" are actually passive/bass radiators. The unit itself only has 2 full-range speaker drivers, and 2 passive/bass radiators. They generally improve the bass frequencies, as they vibrate due to the air that the actual speaker drivers push out. That does mean that the unit needs to be sealed, so air cannot escape, otherwise the passive/bass radiators won't work correctly (as they rely on the air generated by the speakers!). They're generally used in small speakers where a "port" can't be used. They work very well (as you can hear!) but do compromise in the "accuracy" of the sound as they do not actually have any components of an actual speaker, just a piece of rubber (or metal in high quality ones) that vibrates based on the air the speaker drivers generate.

    • @nine182
      @nine182 4 роки тому +3

The Soundlink Mini 1 & 2 have metal passive radiators, the reason there is a backwards facing one is also to help with stability to counter all of the front-facing power. If the one on the back wasn't there, the speaker could move around on the surface, despite the grippy rubber on the bottom.

Thank you. I've been a leftover stone for a long time, but I tried your method and wow! It was fixed. I think I taught her more about hifi in that single moment and the tiers of quality ranging from the rubbish out the backdoors in China to proper stuff put together in Denmark or Finland where failure is not tolerated. I'm listening to this on my Bose speaker at home and the music sounds as good as if I were playing it off my own player. These speakers have been having problems with the supplied charger cord but switching it out with a different cable and plug works if you have trouble getting the speaker to charge. Bose is a high end speaker and they made the speaker systems for movie theaters in the USA; they are the originators of the surround sound systems. They made their systems available to the public when home theaters became mainstream. Explosions on the theater systems will make you feel like you are near the explosion.

I have it and it’s a versatile speaker and mine is about 5 years old and still working nice. The bass is booming when set next to a shiny surface, like a kitchen or bathroom wall. Funny thing is that it employs some audio processing that keeps the speaker from distorting at high power levels by reducing the lows or the highs depending which is more close to the designed limits.

Vince, not to sound like I'm correcting you. That thing in the back you described as a speaker is called a Passive Radiator.
In a sealed box, which in those types of speakers they are usually partially waterproof, the passive radiator acts like a port allowing the main drive speakers to flex to the full extent of their movement.
For clarification, if it doesn't have wires connected it is'nt a speaker..
By the way, Nice Save on checking for updates first....

I fixed one of these that had the charging issue. Get a 2 amp wall adapter and plug and unplug the USB cable for about 10 minutes. Give it 4 seconds after plugging in before unplugging again. It will put a momentary charge each time you do this. After a bit it will have enough charge in the battery to stay charging.

To be more accurate, Firmware resides on a chip in the device such as a graphics card, bluetooth speakers and establishes communication to various parts of the device mainboard, Software are applications you use on the computer, A driver tells the computer the device type etc and allows communication from the computer to the device. You could say a BIOS update is a firmware update in a sense.

Hey Vince here's the Difference between A software update and firmware update A software update, which is sometimes called a software patch, is a free download for an application, operating system, or software suite that provides fixes for features that aren't working as intended or adds minor software enhancements and compatibility. Firmware update is a data that is stored on a computer or other hardware device's ROM (read-only memory) that provides instruction on how that device should operate. Unlike normal software, firmware cannot be changed or deleted by an end-user without the aid of special programs and remains on that device whether or not it's on or off. Hope this help Vince

I do have the exact same device, and the sound from this little thing is amazing. Of course you can get bigger devices that plays better, but for a device of this size it is amazing. However, I have to say it does come with its quirks, and one of my biggest pet peeves with it is that it does struggle to keep connected to PC's and Mac's via Bluetooth over time, sometimes I've had to simply remove it and re-establish the connection to make it work. It is well worth the money it costs though, despite its quirks...
About Firmware vs. Software. Yes, I do see other comments here, but I'll try to give you my take on it.
Firmware is the software that makes the hardware work and contains drivers and whatnot for the operating system to grab onto when you install the OS. So, it lies deep down at the very lowest levels of the device. In a PC you would call it BIOS - if that makes sense, on modern computers there's a lot more than that, but that's the simple version. So, above that level you have the Operating system level (in devices like this, usually an embedded Linux distribution of some kind), and finally - on top of that again you have the Software layer, where applications can be created by "common people and programmers" and installed. However, not on iOS devices like this, it is a very closed system. So, software needs an OS to run, the OS needs the Firmware to run, and the Firmware lies at the base of it all. :)

I got the first version of the bose soundlink mini (so it's the I, not the II like yours) but it's an awesome speaker, sounds magnificent! It was very expensive back in 2013 (200€) and I still use it nearly 6 years later (I got it on Christmas 2013, I was 12!) now I'm 18 and I use it sometimes, I got a protective case for it, and it's still in brand new shape.
The only problem it got is the fact that it uses a barrel jack plug instead of a micro USB :(
Also it doesn't speak, it's just a standard speaker

Contrary to what you may think....when listening to UA-cam, you may not be able to discern true audio fidelity, but, with good headphones, it's quite easy to get a good idea of the timber of your room and the way the device sounds. I find that, while Bose isn't always a liked brand, their small systems REALLY can fill a room with sound and project sound in to places that may surprise you.

Firmware refers more to stuff running direct on metal i.e base operating systems, certain system drivers, the stuff that runs on the device that the device then uses and has drivers for, that sorta stuff
It's all software, really, but software is such a massive catch-all term, it's useful to have sub-categories

Regarding your question - software vs. firmware. Software loads into RAM, while firmware is stored on a ROM. So a firmware update is updating the software that "lives" on a ROM chip (as opposed to a RAM chip). If we were to think about it in terms of desktop computers, a BIOS update would be a type of firmware update. And I suppose this is common knowledge, but if not... RAM = Random Access Memory... also known as "volatile" memory because whether or not it will store information depends on the power state of the computer/device. On - anything in memory remains and is accessible. Off - everything is gone. While ROM = read only memory... also known as "static" memory, its contents remain regardless of the power state of the device. If you ever go into the BIOS/CMOS of your desktop computer - the interface loads from the BIOS ROM chip on the board. And even if you take out the hard drive and boot the machine into BIOS... it'll load BIOS right up. LOL And the only time the interface may change is when you update the BIOS. Otherwise, it's consistent every time. Now that the history lesson is over :D - if you have a modern mobile device of any sort, the entire operating system lives on a ROM. So every system update or flashing the ROM, is a firmware update. :D A final thought... when you hear "this device is bricked" it generally means that firmware is corrupted. And you can't flash it to fix it... because it won't boot, because the firmware is corrupted. LOL

Oh and Vince, then "even in my car i haven't heard" made me really cringe... Speakers in cars are really poor way to compary sound quality. Sure, they are good car speakers, but they are nothing to a normal good speaker/monitor. Firmware and software are pretty loosely defined and highly dependent on context. In general though firmware is lower level and tends to directly interface at the register level for configuration of basic functions of a device while software usually refers to the higher level stuff like ui that most people would be more familiar with. That being said both firmware and higher level application/os stuff are both still considered software. I'm an embedded microprocessor engineer so most of what I do involves writing firmware and designing circuitry for control systems.

I have the first gen, and yes, that is exactly what it is for. I might actually have to replace the battery at some point since it seems that the battery life has gotten quite a bit worse (understandable of a 4+ year old unit that has been used a lot)

Bose gets a lot of hate from the audiophile community and honestly it’s well deserved. They are similar to Beats where a lot of money went into advertising and design and far less into the actual components. IIRC, most Bose speakers use cheaply made paper woofers. To me, they do sound pretty decent but once you start comparing it to other brands in the same price range, the difference is pretty obvious and has turned me away from them. But they do look pretty nice so gotta hand it to them for that.

No comparison between Bose and Beats. Bose "Beats" it hands down. PS none of my Bose speakers (Bose 1-2-3/Wave/L1 Compact, Soundlink/Soundlink Mini) have "cheaply made paper woofers". In fact I've had these items for over 10 years with zero issues. That's quality.

It’s IP67 and the speakers are rubber for that reason. Beats and Bose are both American so I’m not gonna stand by either even though i own products by both. Probably the same as iPhone and Samsung, both made in the same factory in China

Firmware is software, but it's a little more permanent than lets say an Apps information that is written and modified often, firmware is usually an "Operating System" "OS" that may never need an update, but over time things change "New compression or changes in Bluetooth connectivity Etc may change" and thus products may become inoperable unless the OS can be modified in order the device wont become redundant..
BTW a SUB Woofer if functioning properly should not be heard but rather Felt "Floors, Walls shake and vibrate and even windows may break" as they operate below the audible range, whilst a Woofer is mainly within the Audible range.. APU I dropped a like..

Hi all, I have the red light flashing problem but my Mac doesn't recognize the speaker when I connect it, same running Windows 10 with Parallels... I tried with an old PC running Windows 8, same problem despite I installed the controller from Bose. Any clue?

nice easy one for ya vince :) tho admit i did chortle a little when you thought the speaker could maybe control the tracks on the cd player apart from the cd player being older tech, they were also only connected by stereo 3.5 mm jacks!!! ;) im an ex audio engineer and alotta ppl wouldnt like my opinion on bose, they are good no denying it but nowhere near as good as some in their price bracket on certain items, best thing they ever made, in my opinion? that would have to go to the venerable bose cannon range in mono, which has graced the walls of many pups and clubs the world over for over 3 decades, they truelly are in a class of there own that paticular unit for that purpose :) ps in no bias way atall i have alot of vary good audio from the 70s to current day, but overall i have to admit to being a B&O fan, tho obv i wouldnt have invested 10s of thousands in my bang and olufsen gear if i wasn't :)

    • @gorjy9610
      @gorjy9610 4 роки тому

It's possible to control player with only audio cable with 3.5mm jack and that kind of control is widely used in mobile phones industry for over a decade and even some of Sony players use this, not sure now if there is any CD or I just see that on MD players but anyway it's possible and seen already in consumer electronics long time ago.

    • @gimble8638

@@gorjy9610 yes im aware of the technology your speaking of in some phones etc in a laymans/consumers way (not worked in electronics since 2005) but as i said in this case its older technology hes using, i mean lets face it i doubt there have been many if any portable personal cd players made in the last 10yrs, let alone embracing that technology thats just thru audio and if there have been i still know vince's player isn't one of them (altho basically its just that the control and stereo signals are dispyphered and seperated internally instead of the older method which im gonna explain now :) So, im old enough to remember wired tv remotes, they used a mono 3.5 jack as a control only connection ;) which very neatly brings us to an older method to have remote functions in the 90s on the headphone lead etc (and this method still runs to present day and is frankly still more widely used than the newer method your mentioning) but it isnt an audio cable per say its a stereo control combo, "3 rings" so its just stereo and control together in one plug (and socket obv) so yes there have been other ways to control for 50yrs never mind 10yrs!!!! lol (but it took them untill the 90s to create the stereo control combo (3 ring) all in one lol), but as i said even that doesn't apply either in this case as in it doesn't apply to neither that particular cd personal stereo or to the lead he used (i dont know if that speaker would support both 3 ring and 2 ring or just the 2 ring combo you've mentioned either tbh) hence i used the term stereo jack (audio only) in original comment above. I didn't really want to go deep into this in my original comment, i was just generally pointing out that in no way it was gonna work with that machine but hey ho i've explained it all now in the end anyway and theres certainly nothing new here lol (and i'l not even start on the other 90s lead and socket that came along, the little used 4 ring which was when the small handycams first came along ( left A, right A, control and picture) lol :)

Firmware is a hardware specific controller program that usually gets flashed on to the device's permanent storage memory chip. It is technically software, but for controlling a hardware device like a camera, bluetooth device, router, etc. Software tends to mean what you load on to a computer system to perform some user task.
