This man is exactly WHY decent people who deserve a break cannot get one! We had a tenant ask us to pay their way across country to escape a very bad domestic situation and let her live Three months before paying. We thought my daughter was nuts for saying yes. It cost $2,000. To get her here and $6,000. In rent for three months. On the 4th month, she handed over $10,000. Four months rent + her fare to get here. She’s a single woman with children and I worried for my daughter helping her. It paid off in many ways and she’s lived in the home 10 years! No Problems. I told my daughter that only happens once in a lifetime!

As soon as I saw her and her demeanour, it was my thought too. No surprise and I would pick she was expecting the knock at any time. Fancy raising your kids like that and I refuse to mention my thoughts about the wee dog.

You check your bank account to see if the money was deposited, only bank check or certified funds, no personal checks. No keys until the money clears the account.

Um that says she has been way too kind and empathetic. Doesn’t matter how long he has been able to live for free off her. It’s over she is taking back her property.
My landlord makes me do repairs and then has a fit if I take it off my rent. Wicked people exist on both sides - landlords and tenants.

I am blacklisted on the tenancy database because my landlord said half the lightbulbs in the house were blown. Turns out they didn’t flick the power on in the power board. Now I have a black mark because the real estate are too dumb to turn on the power!

10 years without paying rent... would never happen here. Not many private landlords, rather more property management companies who act on the owner's behalf including evictions for non-payment of rent and unsanitary living conditions

Over here in Canada there is no landlord policing of any kind, not even registration. There are provincial dispute boards which are toothless and overloaded. Brit renters should consider themselves lucky to have any kind of redress

I own rentals, if a tenant calls me with any problem I take care of this immediately. In return I expect the rent PIF on the 1st. Go 10 days with no rent you've got a big problem, ME!

Hello: Here in BC, Canada, it seems there'd be a bit of paperwork involved in setting up a certified rent-payment method of some kind between one person and another. Wait.. what?! Waiting 10 years to see if the tenant is going to pay rent?! That’s insanity!!! Now, I fully understand that people become seriously ill and cannot work, but 10 YEARS?! Then, to add insult to injury, the tenant has the gall to go and blame the landlord for whatever excuse they can come up with.
The landlord doesn’t escape blame here either! They SHOULD have begun eviction proceedings after the first year. Or, at the very least, provide a payment plan for the tenant.
IF a person is being evicted, they should start packing their possessions as soon as they receive the notice and not wait until the day of.
I'm suspicious of that older couple that had a tenant 11 YEARS past due. I'm suspicious that they entered into a, like, reverse mortgage agreement by hand shake with the guy. That why they let 11 years ago, and he was so stubborn about leaving. They probably had the agreement believing he was not going to be alive in the next 10 years. But here we are.

hard to have a lot of empathy for the couple who let a guy stay in the house for 10+ years. I did feel bad for the young couple, particularly the wife who gave over the keys to that trifling woman who paid zero dollars to stay in that nice place and had the gall to have an attitude with them. I used to own rentals and would always do reference checks with previous landlords but never the most recent. Unfortunately current or most recent will often give a glowing review because they want to get rid of a bad tenant.

I don't understand how uk laws allow for corrupt letting agents and Tennants to go so long without paying before an eviction an take place. IN Australia it's all regulated Tennant inspections every 6 months. Uk should look towards Australia to change rules and regulations

I own a property in the U.K. which I rent to a tenant.
I like to think that I have done due diligence with regard to choosing a reputable letting agent, who chooses my tenants carefully.
Who on earth doesn’t visit their property on a regular basis for site inspection?
Who on earth has no contact with their tenants on a regular basis?
I am an NRL but if I lived in the U.K., I would be visiting the property as often as I am legally allowed.

You didn't fake any action for 10 years, which speake volumes. No court will grant you any compensations. You will get aviction warrant and perhaps some amount as a symbolic compensation.

Landlords should collect two months rent. first and last and the security deposit before anybody moves in . and ffs , if they don’t pay rent for two months, start the eviction process.
