I have a 2016 Gibson ES-339. (Memphis) I am more of a rock player, bit of blues and country. This is my legacy guitar. In 52 years of playing...this is my all time fav....I modded it a bit with a master volume and master tone plus the volume for each pick up. I am amazed what i can get with that. I also relocated the switch to the back where the bridge pick up tone was. The master volume is where the switch was. Nothing was altered to where it could not be returned to normal, although i doubt i'd ever sell it. Highly recommend this axe. BTW, I also have two Epiphone semi's...a studio dot and a Riviera. The 339 just fits my body better, and of course sounds the best!!!!
Getting my 335 off from layaway soon! Owning this guitar would mean I bought my first QUALITY instrument! It's gonna be the happiest and proudest day of my life so far.
I opened up an ISA savings account for this guitar yesterday, ever since I saw marry mcfly use this in back to the future when I was a kid I wanted to play guitar then I realised chuck berry had one and noel Gallagher a few years later and just fell in love with them! You don't get anymore rock n roll than these guitars! The sound and the shape is just beautiful! Can't wait :)
+supersimon44 this is exactly the same for me. always wanted one since seeing it in back to the future when i was about 11 (although i realised the other day it's actually a 345 that he plays). anyway, i'm buying the satin 335 on monday!
Great demo. I really heard and saw the difference I was hoping to see. Definitely helped me decide on getting my 335 and I never regretted it. Can't go wrong! 339 is cute but is not going to give you the same richness and depth the 335 has. But it's true, if you're masking the tone with enough effects just go with aesthetics.
Biggest difference I notice is the ES335 has more air, fatness, and bloom than the ES339; obviously due to its larger size and tone chambers. Both guitars sound great though. I also like the satin finish; kinda gives the guitars a pseudo road-worn appearance. But I understand some cats insisting that a new guitar should also be nice and shiny...its all good.
As a player who played multiple styles the 335 sounds better for blues but the the 339 does everything else better in live situations which are way different than jamming at home. I own both and love both
been thinking about a 335 for a while then just read about the 339 today and started the debate all over. Already have a 1960s reissue Gibson LP and a Fender Strat. Your comment reminded me why I wanted a 335 in the first place.
Great vid thx. For me es-335 all the way. Depends on the amp too. I looked and tried the 339 but I just didn't like the feel and tone. Now my 335 sounds just ok through my Fender amp but just sounds killer through my Mesa Boogie. Luv it! You need the combo that works for you and your style. It's all good folks!
Jos Meurrens Agreed. or an old transition or '64-'65 blackface Deluxe Reverb. BTW, the 339 is really nice when sitting around the room. It'll stay on your lap in a nice, normal posture. The 335 is a bit too large for comfort (and I am not a small dude at 6"1" lI had an '83 Ibby AM100 with that 339 sized body I love. It has a neck width that is a bit just too small. I liked that his demos let me hear the guitar and were less like an audition. He played open sounding stuff that was easy to analyze. I wish he had talked more about the slim taper neck,
Mick you have such great touch! Your phrasing is really spectacular. With the new year right around the corner my challenge for you is work on your Jazz Chops. Your talent is so great it should not be limited to just rock and blues.
the difference in these is mathematically about 0.02% or absolutely insignificant. they do both however sound brilliant, but remember this, absolutely no one will notice 1 iota of tonal difference in an audience if you are playing either one, period.
trillriff-axegrinder I have a 345 and a339, you will notice a difference without a doubt. The louder you're playing, the more you'll notice, as well as the more gain. Will am audience be able to tell? Probably not, but recording you will. I stopped wanting to take both with me to gigs (my 345 had Lollar Imperial low winds, the 339 had reg winds. I used the 339 for higher dirt, but used the stereo output on the 345w/neck running through octave Fuzz with the bridge into a pushed amp). Rolling off the tone won't get the 339 close to the full size, however I rewired the neck tone to a master tone w/push pull to bypass the tone all together for more treble and output, abs turned the bridge tone into a master high-cut/low-pass filter. This does allow me to get close to a full size tone.
trillriff-axegrinder I've worked on guitars, amps and effects for close to a decade, and I hear what you're saying about how close they should be on paper. I don't know exactly what the difference really is, but I'm willing to take your numbers. I can say from experience that how things are on paper and what they really end up being ate more often than not much farther away.
why am i more inclined towards the 339? it has more of that magic tone in the clean in my ears... damn...and im more of a fan to the 335 cuz of my cousin...
Connor I appreciate you following up. Any specifics? I confirmed that the studios do have 57 classics as opposed to the burstbuckers. The burstbuckers are great I have them in my 2013 Les Paul Std. but I believe I would prefer the 57 classics in a 339. A little less top end. Guitar would be more for the jazzier side of my playing which I believe these 57's are better suited. Just love the size.
That's so weird. The ES-339 sounds brighter when played softly but darker when played with hard picking (in the clean demo). It's almost like the 339 has some kind of high end roll off or something. Definitely prefer the ES-335, but sadly I can't buy a black satin one anymore (or at least it's not easy).
this review is fuckign great cause the guitar player plays good parts without being boring and make you feel the great tone of the guitar. Lots of review are leaded by selfish-guitarplayers that wants to gives you "how good the ayre playing". Great review
335 sounds deeper rounder whilst the 339 has a brighter more cutting sound. Both otherwise they're the same. Personally I like the 335 for its deeper bluesy tone. There's a nice clarity to the 339 which at times is desirable. Really it's hard to decide. Both would be best but a little expensive!
Totally love both of these beautiful guitars, and between them they cover just about every musical base for a working guitar player. Soo...guess that means I need to start saving then?! As always a typically excellent and informative review from Guitarist and a perfect accompaniment to my magazine subscription. Thank you :))
I really like the smaller body of the 339, but the 335 just sounds so much better. I'd have to pick the 335 just because it offers a sound that is further away from my solid bodies. Man, back to square 1.
ES-359 I have officially named it the “Cardboard Box Guitar”. I imagine it has attained this cardboard box sound because of it’s much smaller size than the larger richer sounding semi hollow body guitar‘s. I imagin someone in the gibson factory is trying to make the guitar smaller to attract Les Paul fans but by giving up the rich sound of the larger semi hollow bodied guitar’s may possibly have hoisted their own petard. But time will tell. However since the body is smallet it may become a hit in the asian market where they will give up rich sound for a smaller size guitar.
The 335 really shines on clean tones but it's too big for me. Once you start turning up the gain the 339 really closes the gap. It's a great rock and roll guitar. I love my 339.
gibson 339 arrived. file marks on the neck going into neck binding. unplayable out of the box. high e string breakage after 15 minutes playing. replaced bridge with a roller bridge. tidied up the neck, as much as you can. set the guitar up. now it plays as it should. so this is the big G is it. i hear epiphone leaves them dead in the water, and i can see why. oh i like the pickups, even if the neck one appears to be the wrong way round and doesn't follow the string path.
Thanks for sharing. It's infuriating and inexcusable how many flawed and imperfect "new" guitars Gibson has sent out over the recent years. A real lack of consideration for those saving up and then to receive a flawed instrument. Glad you had the ability to do the required adjustments.
My Memphis made 50th anniversary 63' came stock with burstbuckers 1&2 I love them so much more than the 57 classics I've played in other guitars. I'm a big fan. I love my bridge pickup to be a little bit..bright. Screams attitude. And the neck to be the total opposite. Warm and fat. For blues/jazz
I plan on getting a D'angelico Premier DC. I'll want to change the pickups in the future. What's the closest thing Seymour Duncan makes to the Gibson Burstbuckers? I'm looking for that warm, clear bluesy neck tone and something that can get a nice classic rock tone in the bridge. I'll be playing blues, classic rock, country. I really like Kip Moore's sound if that gives you an idea.
I think the 339 is a better design at least for me. I have one (not Gibson, but Ibanez and same size) and some friends have 335s, those feel kinda too big
+Adrian Jacques Awesome is not 'awesome' but 'fantastic', 'fab', 'great' etc. guitars. I do hate this bloody North American word 'awesome'. Screwed up English language!!
The 339 isnt handcuffed by the size of its hollow the way the 335 is. The 339 has more range when you tweak it. I like it for that. I have this feeling that when Gibson came across the 339 design and heard it for the 1st time, they said to each other..... "We built the 335 too big !!" It sounds better than this. If you really want to know what this guitar is capable of look at this : ua-cam.com/video/de-yA2v4A3w/v-deo.html Listen to Jeff explain why this guitar rings like a bell.
confused about one thing that was stated. I always see and read on the reviews that these guitars are fitted with "burstbuckers" If you read the official Gibson 2015 site it says these are fitted with 57 classics. The guitars just played sounded like "burstbuckers " to me. Seems to have a little more high frequency than the 57's I,ve heard. I currently own a 1983 335 custom shop. Bought new in 83. LOve the guitar but the bulk is a bit annoying. Really interested in the 339 but I would be in the market for the more affordable studio version wine red with the black binding and no pickguard. Beautiful. Love the demonstration. Only suggestion would have been to include a little jazz neck p/u sample. That orange amp sounds fantastic! I remember playing through one at the shop I teach at and it was impressive. Always have been a fender amp guy but those orange amps really kick! If anyone knows the answer about the p/u's used I would appreciate it.
well, you heard wrong and seem like a person that probably doesn't own or has ever owned any Gibson so you really shouldnt give any advice one way or the other,am i correct?
+trillriff-axegrinder Well considering Studios are built to the same quality as an Epiphone at 3x the price, I'll let you draw your own conclusions on their worth.
+ronzo1981 I think not, because the custom shop is the very best of the best. But, the quality of the Memphis series is pretty damn good, I do not think you will regret! I will buy a Memphis pretty soon.
+Torstein Nystrøm I believe ALL Memphis models are considered Custom Shop (except for maybe the studio version of the 335/339). Custom Shop case, custom serial number, and COA (Certificate of Authenticity),...
ROSSAMUSIC I own a CS336, and am not aware of a CS339. The CS336 is solid wood carved out, both top & bottom. Definitely more expensive then a 339, and IMO a great all around tone machine. They quit making them last year, too expensive to be practical for Gibson, I guess.
@@anfiorsceal Some specific D'Angelicos and Eastman models have 25 inch scales. There are some rare cases with 25.5 scales: Gibson Tennessean (huge guitar) Fender Starcaster (Strange guitar) and Coronado...
Sounds great but I don't ever want a satin nitro finish on a premium guitar sorry Gibson! Worries me that the Epiphone ES339 Pro looks better and sounds as good for $400.

Just wondering 😊

“You don't get anymore rock n roll than these guitars!” Wow, THAT, is completely in accurate and 100% false.
Damn the ES-339 is my next axe. Great playing and demo.
Great demo, can really hear the differences. Surprised by the focused mid range of the 339, nicer than expected, kind of an LP with air under it.
Both sounded fantastic. I think I prefer the 335 visually and tonally
I have a same 335, it looks more refined, more than the previous Gibson
Great demo. I really heard and saw the difference I was hoping to see. Definitely helped me decide on getting my 335 and I never regretted it. Kasper if you want a satin ebony one, check out the price at chicago music exchange. Its awesome. I am waiting for mine to be delivered.

To me all gibsons sound the same if they have humbuckers
that's too bad. Sorry bro :(
I liked the 335 for the cleans and the 339 for the dirt. I think that treble sound makes the 339 punch a bit more.

335 cleaner ringier tone.. 339 darker sound and muddy.. even tho I usually like these pu s , I would prob swap them out. Thanks for a great demo!

335 is better.
I think 339 is too solid.
335 has much more identity of semi hollow
almost sounded like the 339 is trying to make a 335 be able to sound closer to an LP while still having some of that classic blues sound to me.

what do you think its better...epiphone dot OR squier jaguar?
Mr. Burns your question has nothing to do with this video and is annoying as hell.
It's the pickups
is the 339 more full bodied...throaty sound than the 335?
Orange's model?
The 339 isnt handcuffed by the size of its hollow the way the 335 is. The 339 has more range when you tweak it. I like it for that. I have this feeling that when Gibson came across the 339 design and heard it for the 1st time, they said to each other..... "We built the 335 too big !!" It sounds better than this. If you really want to know what this guitar is capable of look at this : ua-cam.com/video/de-yA2v4A3w/v-deo.html Listen to Jeff explain why this guitar rings like a bell.
Is there a hude difference by comparing Gibson Memphis ES-339 Satin 2015 and 2016?
Same guitar I think
Bought a new 2015 339 in gloss on Amazon for 1,5euro. Pretty good deal haha.
+Baloo0254 one and a half euro?? what?
thousands that is :)
confused about one thing that was stated.
+Mike Geyer I've heard some not so great things about the Gibson Studio models.
Don't know what you're reading, as I've read the specs on the Gibson site as well and the 2015 and 2016 models clearly state burstbucker.
well, you heard wrong and seem like a person that probably doesn't own or has ever owned any Gibson so you really shouldnt give any advice one way or the other,am i correct?
+trillriff-axegrinder Well considering Studios are built to the same quality as an Epiphone at 3x the price, I'll let you draw your own conclusions on their worth.
Yaaaaaaaaaa what a BEAST!!!
Totally awesome !!! Like 339...
Surprisingly the es 339 is cheaper than 335
+The guitar boss Less material and thus cheaper.
are these the memphis 339s the same quality as the custom shop 339?
I wish Gibson or someone would make these type of guitars with a 25.5 scale length.
+ruscoe lee You gotta purchase Brian May's axe.
Agree. I am always looking for a 25,5 inch semi hollow. Very few options. Ok guess due to the construction they would end up neck heavy
@@nacienlos70 how about the D'angelico or Eastman semis ?
@@anfiorsceal Some specific D'Angelicos and Eastman models have 25 inch scales. There are some rare cases with 25.5 scales: Gibson Tennessean (huge guitar) Fender Starcaster (Strange guitar) and Coronado...
is laminated worse than solid woods?
Dani West No, not necessarily. Just different.
Sounds great but I don't ever want a satin nitro finish on a premium guitar sorry Gibson! Worries me that the Epiphone ES339 Pro looks better and sounds as good for $400.
I like the look of the Satin finish for more of a rock vibe, but you're right. This guitar is too expensive for that.
My 2003 Epiphone Elite 335 has incredible sound and quality ...
I saw the price, and... I need both my kidneys
Bigger is better
Are these really worth 3K or there about?
+antipodeandreason Yep!
