    I love my ES-339. Great guitars. Being vertically challenged, standing 5’ 7” on a good day. This guitar looks like an ES-335 on me. Jeff is a great player!

    He said some of the truest words in music. The music comes through you, the music plays you... If you you ever played with a band, you know what it feels like. It's just one of the strongest feelings you can get.

    I have had one of these for 6 months. It is a great guitar, everything Jeff states in the video is spot on. I can play just about any style with this guitar. Intonation is perfect and it stays in tune really well even after several sets of play.

    Seen Jeff in many bands! His bond with David Crosby is super natural! Unsung hero of the 6 string instruments! Ck with web site for who,what,where Jeff playing/gigging with! Seen in dead bands,jazz and with David Crosby last summer! And he's also member in the flying burittos band! Great guy and down to earth!

      Since I'm around his age and also hail from CT, I've been fortunate enough to hear Jeff's development as a musician and a guitarist for close to 50 years now. We were just kids back then, barely old enough to drink, but when he put on the guitar, everybody listened. I still do.

    The man is incredible isn't he? Back in the day, he played with his band at my best friend's wedding. I stood there amazed for so long. At one point he was asking people to shout out a guitar player and he played in that style. Just amazing.

    In 1962 I bought a new Gibson SG-Les Paul for $325 and I earned $1.25/hr
    It took me 260 HOURS to buy the SG.
    (Same model SG today $1800)
    In 2019 the Gibson es-339 goes for $1800.00 and before I retired I earned $45/hr.
    It would have taken me 40 HOURS to buy the es-339 today.
    Sounds like a bargain to me.....

  • @EnragedSlash

    I own one myself. It's a great guitar, fairly cheap being a Custom Shop. The sound is kinda hybrid between a les paul and a 335.It cleans up fabulously with the volume pots and has tons of playability. The tone is great, those 57 classic sound amazing and crystal clear especially in the middle position. Epiphone recently made a more affordable version, which has also push/pull pots for coil splitting and a tuner built-in in the bridge pickup ring.
    Amazing axes! Definitely worths a try ;-)

    Jeff is so tall, the guitar looks minuscule on him. I am a tall man too and I like small and light guitars, so I picked up a nice caramel burst ES-339 (over the larger 335) last year, to complement my SG 61 RI. Love the guitar. Gibson rocks, Pevar blues!

  • @ofahlstrom
    @ofahlstrom 10 років тому +1

    For those of you still wondering, the amp used is a Marshall 5100 Combo.

    • @ofahlstrom
      @ofahlstrom 10 років тому +1

      FuctTotally Yes, very sure. It isn't a tube amp -- it doesn't have a stand-by switch. And the knob layout matches a 5100.
      This is a post from a message board where Jeff responded to someone asking him about his amps.
      "I have a little Marshall that I have been using for the local gigs that I bought from my friend John Mooy a number of years ago when he had his own little music store near Santa Barbara and he was going out of biz. I came to store to help him liquidate some of his wares and I thought, "How bad can this be, it's a Marshall?!".....so I bought it, not knowing how much I would enjoy it.... Besides that it sounds really good, it's surprisingly light as it's a non tube combo with a ten inch speaker in it..... but it really honks!
      Being a die hard TUBE guy, I was very surprized.
      It being light and easy to cart around is never a bad thing, and admittedly, I love using different amps, as I have a bunch of em... They all seem to bring out a different side of musical character, as I have found that when the guitar tone is different it influences my approach to the music. It's like playing a certain sound..... Lately because of the portability factor and just that it's been working for me, I have been using this lil' Marshall for the local OR gigs...
      The amp is a Marshall Mosfet 100.
      Go figure....
      Thanks for askin and I hope you are all well.
      Best regards
      peev"

    I bought a 339 specifically because I'm not that tall and a 335 was too awkward on my 5'8" frame. I had always wanted a 335 but , I kept going back to the 339 in the guitar shop simply because it was Soo much easier to play . I was very happy with my purchase. I usually pick it up before any of my Les Paul's . (L.p. standard , special , JR.) Even before my Tele. or Strat.). Played through my AC 30 it gets a big 👍 from me.

    great player, nice guitar. Is it me or has delay become the most prevalent guitar effect going today. I love to listen to Bonamassa and e. Johnson, but sometimes the delay just starts to wear on the ear. I know all of the great players of today use it to great effect and extent, but sometimes a more earthy unaffected tone is nice. This is not a slight on any of the players mentioned, just an observation.

    I was going to let loose early and get an Epi 339, because I also really like having the coil tap available, but at the same time the tones when tapped are kinda weak and I could do without them.
    I might just hold off a bit longer and invest in a proper Gibson 339.

    @PF1964 Yes. It tends to be a bit brighter. Personally, I think the 335 is better at classic Chicago blues and jazz, whereas the 339 excels at bareknuckle modern blues and classic rock tones. The 339 REALLY likes to be overdriven.

    Hey Jeff, Do you recommend the current 2018-2019 versions of the 339? They've changed some things, Gone are the Burstbuckers etc. Will these newer Gibson 339's sound the same or better?

    • @StevieStirrup
      @StevieStirrup 5 років тому +1

      Michael Burgess the new ones (late 2015 and on) have burstbuckers installed factory. The old ones had 57 classics. I’ve owned both and both sound good but can’t beat the 57 classics in ES guitars.

      10 years later... Yes, slightly. 339 has a bit more presence which may be better for rock and distorted tones but 335 slightly better for blues. Probably wouldn't be able to tell in recordings where EQ has been played around with.

  • @le_gwen
    @le_gwen 11 років тому +1

    I think the tones are suffering because the amp is tiny. This little 1x10's (I think it is) will usually lack the low push and the headroom to really come off strong, imo.

    I saved up for a yr and finally had $2k. Went and ordered this exact guitar. It sounded great and had a great neck that made it super easy to play but my Mexican tele is built better. It was falling a part. The strings all rattled. It wouldn't stay in tune. The list goes on. Really sad that Gibson has came to this. These are simple things gibson can correct and I could also correct them but if someone spends 2k on a guitar, it should work properly. I returned it and got a 56 reissue strat and it's the cats ass. So nice but I still want an es 339. I see they came out with the es 339 studio semi hollow but haven't seen a review

      lovesgibson Yea man, I actually ordered it from one company and after playing it for a few days took it to my luthier who works independently. The guitar could have been fixed; needed a new nut and stuff like that and I kinda wish I would have kept it and fixed it. It bothered me that I spent that much money and it wasn't a first class guitar. I will get another one; just won't order it. It was probable the easiest guitar I have played.... I have heard a lot of bad things about Gibson in recent years tho. It's kinda sad that they aren't more concerned with their quality. I guess every company has ups and downs. Hopefully they will rebound soon.

      So, I too have a Mexican strat after divesting in a collection of Strats and Strat Pluses and PRS. It has a Seymore Duncan hum bucker in the bridge position. It's sort of a jack of all trades I don't mind leaving out around the kids. I went to Guitar Center this weekend and wanted to absolutely fall in love with ES-339 but it absolutely would not stay in tune. I played a Studio for about 30 minutes and fiddled with the amp and guitar to find the sound I was looking for, but ultimately found parts of it, but not the whole thing- Muddy bottom with snappy highs, or muted highs with punchy bottom, some buzz, etc... but had to retune every 5 minutes. Man, I want to love this and add a proper, non-studio 339 to my quiver, but I left after 30 minuted disappointed.

    Tried one out yesterday at my local Guitar Center and, man, was I disappointed. Put it in tune, played for 30 seconds, bent a few notes, and voila! Out of tune. Tuned it up, played for about 30 seconds, bent a few notes, and voila! Out of tune again. This went on for a few minutes and I finally decided that only someone with more money than brains would spend $2900 on a guitar that won't stay in tune for more than 5 minutes.

    I've had both the Gibson and the Epiphone. Now I have the Epiphone. Save your money. Get a Epiphone ES -339 Pro.

      +raytheprinter Imagine you were building a guitar,and had 1,200.00 to use for parts,,,or you had 200.00.

      I can kind of see what you're saying, but idk if the difference in parts quality is that drastic.

      +JHarrell89 To me there is a big diff.I am very picky.You can change out the PUs for some much better ones .I recon it just depends on what you want and can afford.I had a Epi Dot from ,,maybe 2003 made in Korea(i could be off on the date) and it was amazing,thru a 50 w Marshall Dual reverb 6100 half stack,and every amp i tried .Great guitar!.I bought a couple newer ones made in China,and both sucked,so you should play as many as you can,some are better than others.Also some decent deals on used guitars .But if the Epi feels and sounds good to you ,that is all that matters.Do you have access to some music stores ,that carry them?To me the main diff are Gibson feels better and sounds clearer,nicer neck,frets,easier to play.But Epi makes some decent guitars that sound very good! Hope that helps some,and good luck whatever you decide on.

    Jeff,I remember you from your cable TV's guitar lessons,Gibsons are great,but,you haven't played anything until you've played a Carvin CT6 or SH645, makes Gibson seem as over priced as they really are. No reason at ALL to $5000 for any guitar!
