They are wiping out the middle class. The big problem is that wages do not match the rate of inflation. Seeing houses in the ghetto that use to cost around $100k or less now costing up to 200k.

I just spent seven months crossing the country, seeing every state and almost every major city. This is happening and it's worse than people can imagine.
I just went out to oakland/san francisco and it actually wasn't as bad as I expected, compared to how it's presented in the news at least. I asked my brother about it, and he said, yeah, it is what it is. Yeah it's bad, but I thought san fran would be unlivable, not the case at all.
I am Polish and I am horrified by what happened to the USA. Nightmare. Dirt, stench and poverty. For me personally, it is very sad, because as a student during communism, I dreamed of going to America, which for me was an incomparable symbol of democracy, freedom and wealth. Now I'm 71 years old. There are no illegal black immigrants from Africa in Poland, there are no thieves, hooligans, homeless people, drug addicts, beggars, and above all, our cities and villages are well-kept, clean, there is no garbage anywhere, and the streets are safe. Poles are a very hospitable nation, come to see that you can still live a normal life.
Nick, go check out Sedona Arizona where the workers are forced to live in designated parking lots in their vehicles because nothing is affordable. Yes, they work fulltime.
@DCM88 Remember God asked why didn’t you use the row boat I gave you? In other words, we know what we have to do, we have the tools, the know how, the power.
That is $52,000 a year which isn't enough? I don't get it. But I don't think you should pay taxes on that income but now taxes nickel and dime you every time we turn around. They need more options for single people.
We live on one income. Drive an old Jeep but have a newer vehicle that requires full coverage insurance. But we bought our land first and started stashing money into the 401k. Now have enough in there to pay off the land. Bought a rent to own cabin…paid it off. Bought a toolshed to match and converted that into a bedroom and paid it off. Have no internet bill but on a clear day, I can attach my phone to my computer and gain internet access that way. Have to catch rainwater off the roof but buy drinking water. Everything was a balance game when we did this. No way we could have just jumped in on an expensive place right off. No way. ❤ edit: ok, 1 income for now but we are selling off timber to open up sunny locales to plant flowers. Figure we will try selling bouquets for a little extra $. It can be done.
No it means we have a lot of people that cannot take care of themselves. Either way not my problem and they can suffer in the position they put themselves in
Most the jobs I worked I was homeless the entire time I would work like 50-60 hours a week sometimes the reality is rents unaffordable and jobs don't wanna pay enough to be sustainable income for one person im an introvert and extremely autistic I cannot room with people and I cant fallback on my parents none of these things were my fault but I shouldn't have to rely on others just to survive when im doing my part and probably working more than u oh yeah and you get a lot of fines for being poor I got thousands of dollars in tickets for sleeping in my car
This isn’t even a full blow recession, Gary. Certain industries growth has stopped or contracted but much of that has to do with those same industries experiencing an unsustainable rate of growth during the pandemic. That’s not to say this country isn’t a mess right now because it is but this is nothing comparable to a depression.
We got two political parties that don't care anything about the homeless, the poor, and so many senior citizens are homeless. There's no money in helping the less fortunate. Once someone figures out how to make money, then maybe we can solve the problem.
I over heard conversation of 3 elderly ladies talking about moving to Mexico most of the conversation was about how much each can afford towards expenses. 1 mentioned she was concerned about medical care. I heard someone tell her that she is going to put that on her list. I only have to assume that they can not afford to live in the USA.
Politicians of both parties party care abt nothing but kpg their jobs. I left the dem party, but seeing the gutless rinos convinced me that only Trump has the sensible policies.
Are you serious?? 😂😂 there's BILLIONS upon BILLIONS of dollars per year in "helping the homeless" and charities! 😂😂 They are VERY well funded by your taxes (and donations) & the top bureaucrats of each of these entities make 6-figure salaries after being hired or appointed or grant approved by their politically connected friends. If they actually solved homelessness, then all that goes away & they can't let that happen before they all can become multi-millionaires. Nick, I think most people watch your videos because the majority of people can’t constantly travel and see different towns and areas of the country. People also like you, your sense of humor and video style. People don’t necessarily watch to see “bad things” or “homelessness”. You don’t necessarily have to focus on that if you don’t want to. It’s happening now where I live in the suburbs of a big city. I live in a suburb of San Diego where our last mayor was AWFUL, as the homeless descended EN MASSE on our town and he was asked about what he would do to counter it, his response ? “What harm are the homeless doing to YOU?” Apparently he seemed to think it’s COMPASSIONATE to let homeless live in filth and desperation and drug addiction and crime vs getting a grip on the issue, or even trying to. So now he’s gone and we have elected a more conservative minded mayor who used to be a homeless drug addict in this very town and seems to at least think leaving them to live and die on the street isn’t compassion. It’s going to take years to try to turn around what poor leadership, draconian covid lockdowns, defunding the police , and making stealing less than 900 bucks worth of stuff a misdemeanor has done in 4 short, horrible, chaotic years.

11:22 growing up on Maui, Hawaii, I saw it first hand. Everyone moved to Maui. They start as tourist and then become speculators that bought and sold the island. Eventually it was all the newcomers or Malahini in Hawaiian the began trying to run everything. It was the NIMBY sindrum and they were more concerned about maintaining their lifestyles. So many oceanfront McMansions were owned by them and they would complain if someone walked by the ocean in front of their houses. They believed they owned the beach out to the water. They didn't. Public domain extends up on land forty geet from the high tide mark. That didn't stop the entitled from complaining and trying to change the laws.
Plenty of abandoned houses throughout the US that could be reclaimed but the government and renovated my charitable organizations and the persons that would be living in them. Maybe charge minimal rent for those that could afford it or just let people live there free for various amounts of time. So much cheaper then putting a homeless up in five star hotels like they are doing out of desperation in some cities. L Right now illegal immigrants are talking about squatting in these houses themselves. So they will wind up getting them free. Not Americans. I would prefer to see our vets our vets and disabled persons living there. We could use some advice from Habitat for Humanity

For everyone saying the problem is lack of affordable housing are mistaken. I worked in a homeless shelter and saw firsthand some of the dynamics. There's government subsidized housing, but there's prerequisites. You have to fill out an application, show some form of income and have a valid id. Some places require a clean drug screen. For a lot of folks, that's too much to ask.

This is the most accurate description of Traverse city on the internet. Every other video will only show you the glamour shots. There are some really glamorous moments, but most of it is this.

I have lived in Traverse City for the majority of my life when my parents and I moved there in 1992. Had the pleasure of growing up here and it is definitely not the same. You can tell right where greed takes over and it's very unfortunate considering that tourism is the Industry they lean upon the most which has the lowest wages. It's getting to where people can't even afford the houses a half hour to an hour away that were once considered cost effective housing (minus the drive). Businesses are having a tough time finding people to hire that can afford to live in the area. Not good for the future of the Service Industry that drives the tourism sector in Traverse City. Thanks for coming to our town!!! Was tickled pink to see the footage of the town I've had so many memories in over the years and how much everything has changed. If you come back up to Traverse someday it would be awesome for my other half and I to meet you sometime. Totally understandable you couldn't do something like that on this visit, but perhaps another time we can hit up Union Street Station and some of the other restaurants and drinking holes around there! Really love your channel!! Also thank you for showing us around Flint and Grand Blanc. Those are my family's roots
I grew up in Traverse City and lived there until the early 90's. Good times. Yup, union street, Dills, U & 1 and don't forget Brady's. My family lived right off 8th street. Walking downtown to the beach when there was one. Shopping at Millikens and the mall. 😊❤
AirBnB took all the workforce housing for away. A lot of the housing in resort towns are second homes. When they are not being used as a second home, they are being used as vacation rentals or empty. There is a shortage of housing in resort towns. I use to live in some mountain towns in Colorado. I lived in Summit County and in Leadville. Leadville became more popular and more expensive, so I got priced out of there. There is a housing shortage in these resort towns. I would not blame this on homeless people, it is greed. Less fortunate people are just a scapegoat for a bigger issue. There is a shortage of workforce in these towns. It is hard to hire teachers, fill positions in grocery stores, hire essential workers like police officers and even doctors get priced out of some resort towns.
What are we becoming? A THIRD WORLD COUNTRY! That's what. Why? Because we have allowed an open border and have allowed some of the WORST of those country's violent criminals into our country! Its not always " bad lifestyle choices" for some its job loss, its age lots of places wont hire you if you're over 40, loosing everything due to medical debt, a terminal illness like Cancer, being unable to work for any reason etc. The last place i lived wanted you to make 3 times the amount of rent before you qualified to live there. Ppl buying second homes, buying property to use as Air B&B or Vacation Homes all of that contribtes to housing shortages

Back in the mid 90's we used to go to Traverse in October, staying on the north end of town. You'd get up early go outside and smell the pines, loved it there. We stayed away from the Cherry fest. Even then, it had a rep. Gordie Howe had a sports bar and eatery there as well. We'd always stop in. We're sad to see that over growth. Seems the powers that be always find a way to handicap a good thing.

Another enlightening trip Nick. It really doesn’t shock me anymore, regarding the homeless encampment’s. The state of the economic collapse is everywhere. It’s just the beginning unfortunately. Stay safe, healthy, warm,& blessed.💯🫶🏾💕💜✝️🙏🏾🇺🇸
The US has approximately 653,000 homeless and that's why you see this kind of thing all over the US. The greed in this country is going to destroy it. I live in the next town over from Hell and they are doing the same to my small town. Building all these subdivisions and when the people move from the city they want to turn the area into the same thing they moved from. It really ticks me off.
The more I think of it I am pissed to see my state like this. It never use to be this way back in the day. I'm actually embarrassed for you to see this. I promise you it use to be absolutely beautiful and nice up north. Times are tough now a days.
The homeless situation is definitely sad, horrible, being ignored by elected crooked officials/politicians, but homeless or not, there’s no excuse for living like pigs! If their arms and legs work they can at least keep it neat. Disgusting.
What l don’t understand is how trashy and disgusting those tents are. I camp all the time outside, sometimes for months, and keep my site clean. I’m surprised they don’t have rats and other vermin.
The fact people are living in such cold weather is so sad… truly heartbreaking. House hunting has been so sad, most of the homes have tenants that would need to leave - many of whom cannot afford current rental rates. It’s really sad, reminds you all there is to be grateful for.
If you’re homeless, ie. living in a tent in the woods, how long will it take to earn enough money for a down payment? As for mortgage approval, with a record of homelessness, you’re not getting it.
Love your show. The young couple you talked with at the end was probably the best thing I have seen in some time. They did something about their situation and now are on their way to Kansas. So there just might be an entire world of such stories and songs presently camping with the bums. Good Luck!
I worked for the Forest Service in Colorado for a couple summers doing seasonal work. I was near Breckenridge, a playground of the elite. There is very little affordable housing, many people who work at the resorts squat in the woods because they can’t afford an apartment. The number of squatters’ camps on National Forest land is hard to calculate. These people trash the woods, I have no respect for the land. It’s hard to evict them, because you’re legally allowed to camp indefinitely on a national forest as long as you move your encampment every two weeks. Sometimes people will occupy the same spot for months at a time. This was back in the late 2000s, I’m sure it’s only gotten worse since.
GENTRIFICATION is a bane . the Yuppies, Techies and Californians move into cheap housing and the cost of rent goes sky high. and then they sell those homes for 10x what they paid for them. the poor have noplace to go.
It's changed a lot in my lifetime. I remember when the Murdick's Fudge in Acme was kind of out in the middle of nowhere, now it's all built up around it.
It's not that there's a housing shortage---it's that there's an AFFORDABLE housing shortage. It seems they only build multi-million dollar homes now. Any affordable houses are bought up and flipped for big bucks..or torn down and a replaced with a mansion They price the average worker right out of the market. We do not need more section 8s or high rise apartments. We need small cape cods, ranches etc. Small, cute and affordable! Something the average WORKER can buy!
I can’t imagine paying resort town home prices and worrying about property values going down when the homeless camps take over….(and that’s just ONe issue that comes with this problem)
Traverse City wouldn't exist, at least in the way it does now, if not for Ford Motor Company. Let me explain. Because of Detroit, the Motor City and all the major car manufacturers located there but especially Ford, people work hard for all their lives. Many are good with their money and saved alot of bank. People retire and where do they move to? Up North as we all say here. I know people who moved to Traverse City and other similar towns in the upper lower peninsula. Other than retirement there ain't diddly do dah squat for work up that way. People are either retired and rich or working class poor without a decent job or none at all. There is very little in between. Those who grew up and live up there want to come "downstate" to live. Those who have worked for the last 40 years socking away their money can't wait to get out of the big city and move "up north" to retire, relax, drink beer and plow snow. Im sure this dynamic has taken place in many other states its just such a dramatic phenomenon here in Michigan.
I grew up in Wilmington Ohio. It died a sudden death when Airborne Express closed. 1/3 of Wilmington worked there. Before that, people were happy. Mostly…. Seeing scenes of winter in the north really brings back that desperation you can only feel when you are cold and hungry. …blessings be with you all out there…..Tom
We stopped to picnic if lunch here at a park near the beach (according to my recollection) on our way to Mackinac Island... in 1965 when I was 11. We had driven from California for a family reunion at some small lake out in the woods (Platt Lake), crossed Lake Michigan from Milwaukee to Ludington by ferry. Those were quite different days I guess.
Man I miss Michigan. For anyone that’s moved away, for some reason there’s some nostalgia around the cold, cloudy, brown, and gloomy winters. I’m not sure why. I hated it when I lived there. It was depressing. I’m sure I’d hate it if I went back up there too. But still, I miss it, for some strange reason.
I moved back to Northern Michigan to be closer to immediate family, and I also enjoy the low crime rate, and the cops don't bust you for every petty offense they can find. I like being able to go for a walk at night without fear of being robbed or asked for money, etc.
Sedona AZ used to be a cool place, now it’s an overpopulated, tourist congested hell hole. But with a lot of natural beauty. They just authorized that workers can live in their cars because it’s so expensive.
Telluride is a sanctuary city. The Mexicans get to live there, but everybody else that works there has to find a place to live elsewhere. 50 miles from Telluride, on the southern wilderness of our town, the Mexicans have an encampment, even this winter. They had a fire a few months ago get out of hand and the fire department had to go put it out.
Everything you said about what policies led to those huge homeless camps is the same here in Hawaii. Someone just sent me a gift box of items from Cherry Republic and it was all really good. Even the box it was packed in. The cherry salsa is great.
You can thank the democrats for that! They care more about the homeless migrants than they do the average working man who keeps the lights on in this country. I'm from NY I've worked in NYC I've seen it with my own 2 eyes.
@@Jacklyn-zc8dc no the NYC city shelter system in place. No elderly apartment building has kicked anyone out for immigrants but it makes for a nice story.

I'm from Traverse City. It's so sad. 😢
What l don’t understand is how trashy and disgusting those tents are. I camp all the time outside, sometimes for months, and keep my site clean. I’m surprised they don’t have rats and other vermin.
It’s a reflection of their minds. Seriously.
I'm sure they DO have vermin problems.
The bears will be coming out of hibernation shortly...😉
People keep saying give them homes. Then the homes will look like this. 🤷
The fact people are living in such cold weather is so sad… truly heartbreaking.
House hunting has been so sad, most of the homes have tenants that would need to leave - many of whom cannot afford current rental rates.
It’s really sad, reminds you all there is to be grateful for.
The MLS has “homes” in the homeless area starting at only $439,900.
As a Cornish man, I appreciate the "pastie" mentions. 🎉
😋
I was there in the mid 70's! What a great place it was back then!
America is having billions for wars but not for homeless. Poor. Sick. And Hungry people. Suuuuperpower.
but if we take care of the homeless they won't want to work, right?
Been living 30 miles outside out Traverse for almost 10 years and I've seen the change first hand. 2020 was the catalyst for the yuppie invasion
The rich can buy the new housing, leaving the older and cheaper housing to less affluent people.
I can’t imagine paying resort town home prices and worrying about property values going down when the homeless camps take over….(and that’s just ONe issue that comes with this problem)
Maybe consider yourself lucky where you live
What's really ruining the world isn't homelessness its GODLESSNESS!!
Religion is the cause of most wars in the world
To some extent yes
Happy Anniversary, Nick and Manager!
Williams Az also
That's a sad commentary if you think about it. Worker's wages are so bad that they have to live in their cars.
Oh my God. I just applied to work in Sedona!
@@KC-rt4hp you know how capitalism works. Payment is shitty. Nobody agrees. They have to raise wages . But Americans just love to be slaves
@@gemox3225whatcha doing over there?
Telluride is a sanctuary city. The Mexicans get to live there, but everybody else that works there has to find a place to live elsewhere. 50 miles from Telluride, on the southern wilderness of our town, the Mexicans have an encampment, even this winter. They had a fire a few months ago get out of hand and the fire department had to go put it out.
Everything you said about what policies led to those huge homeless camps is the same here in Hawaii.
Someone just sent me a gift box of items from Cherry Republic and it was all really good. Even the box it was packed in. The cherry salsa is great.
Nick is definitely not used to Midwest weather LOL. 25 degrees in the winter is all good my friend.
I’m telling u 😂
150,000 U.S. farms have been shut down in the past 4 to 5 years.... 😢😢😢😢😢
Great content, Nick! Always love watching your videos. Warm greetings from the Netherlands! (we have a bad housing crisis over here too btw!)
🇳🇱
Clearly the world doesn’t need resorts it needs affordable houses
You can thank the democrats for that! They care more about the homeless migrants than they do the average working man who keeps the lights on in this country. I'm from NY I've worked in NYC I've seen it with my own 2 eyes.
At what point does a person should be responsible for their own well being?
@@Snorky_88NY’s right to to shelter applies to all. Lots of Americans live in their shelters. Now are they nice, ehhhh that is a different story.
@@NSgeg765they've been removed for illegals, same with a elderly apartment complex.
@@Jacklyn-zc8dc no the NYC city shelter system in place. No elderly apartment building has kicked anyone out for immigrants but it makes for a nice story.
High real estate , high rents low pay, unemployment, ANYONE can be homeless at ANY time. All it takes is ONE thing. Not EVERY homeless person is an 31:17 addict or lazy. And instead of critisizing try helping. NEED STABILITY AND HOUSING FIRST!
It was fun to build forts in the woods, when i was 10yrs old
They are probably all at work can't afford to live in these crazy tourist towns
What those old folks are saying is true all over the country. People moving in, high construction.. and the "more growth" crowd definitely winning. Here in NC, same thing going on, farms sold, developed, forests destroyed, rinse and repeat.
Thanks for the video Nick Had no idea about the homeless camps up there in TC. It is a beautiful area. We like going up to that area in late Fall not as crowded. Michigan is such a Beautiful State with all 4 seasons and surrounded by the Great Lakes ❤
I worked, and paid taxes so that no American citizen would have to live like this. I paid to enforce our laws, & take care of our own. Not Ukraine, not Mexico, or any place else.
Thanks for raising awareness of this problem Nick. The media is certainly ignoring it. New subscriber.
