A Lame Composition Project

- This was just a small composition project we had for our music 112 class.
We just had a ridiculous number of rules to follow (10 to be precise):
1) Your assignment is to write a composition that will juxtapose common-practice harmonic progressions and voice leading with whatever you want. The "common-practice" music should include the following features.
2) It should consist of two phrases; the first one ends with either a half cadence or an imperfect authentic cadence.
3) The second one ends with a perfect authentic cadence.
4) Harmonic progressions should exhibit well-formed phrase models (Tonic-PreDominant-Dominant-Tonic).
5) Obey strict rules of SATB voice leading. (Contrary motion, no parallel fifths or octaves, no tritones, voices other than bass and tenor cannot exceed an octave, multiple jumps in the same direction, step in the opposite direction after jumping etc.)
6) Use at least one of each of the following non-chord tones: Passing, Neighbour, Apporggiatura and Suspension.
7) Include at least one stylistically accurate second-inversion triad. (Arpeggiating doesn’t count.)
8) The score you turn in should include a complete harmonic analysis (with two levels) of this passage.
9) The entire composition should last no longer than 90 seconds.
10) What happens in the contrasting passage is entirely up to you, but your composition should then return to the common practice music. (Copy and paste, my friends.)
So I came up with an SATB voicing, that followed these rules. I did not assign any instrument to the SATB part in the original. However, the middle part is meant to be played by the piano.
For the purpose of this video, I assigned instruments to each of the parts and notated the stave accordingly. You can see the original transcript when the original theme returns though.
For my middle section, I decided to limit myself by keeping the exact same melody but just reharmonizing it with non-functional chords. This project was essentially just me experimenting with non-functional harmony.
At the end of the day, none of this changes the fact that it is a LAME composition.
