The problem with the story is its a new IP so there is no old lore made by competent writers who knew what creativity was, so they dont have anything to fall back on. Which Todd himself is trying to ruin cause he wants the Elder Scrolls to be more like the lotr movies.
To be fair, Bethesda was allways absolut dogshit when it goes to storytelling. I play their games since Morrowind and i sadly have to say it. After CDPR and Bioware created games that really had amazing story telling in RPG games it was even more obvious.
The formular is outdated how Bethesda designs games. Its allways quantity first, but nooooooo concept to connect it. Even Skyrim was absolut Shit in their story telling, because it never matters. It was never needed and you could ignore it. I often forget it exists and i finished the main quest only after my 20th run in skyrim and even then i forget that it was about Alduin and not the Stormcloaks. The games only got lazier and more uncreativ from title to title, because they know you dont care for it. Just make it big and spew many things in it so modders can have their day and go.
Bethesda had a good decade with lazy programming, but they see now that it cant stay that way. New Engine is absolut necessary and i had big hopes on Microsoft to support them with really good programmers to fix their incompetence, but it seems they need more time for that....
@nikolah.8472 Yeah the main stories are trash and somehow the guild/faction stories are even worse in skyrim/fallout 4. I think the thieves guild questline was the best of the bunch but that's not saying much. With their previous 2 games they were more like playgrounds where you could role-play your character so you could almost forgive it if not for the mountains of bugs that plague the games and some really stupid decisions with the dialogue wheel etc. I won't even get into fallout 76 that was bad on a whole different level. But starfield can't even get the playground part right the saving grace of the previous games is not in this one. You are right that they have been lazy for some time the whole gaming industry has been slipping atleast when it comes to the mainstream games. BTW who do you choose stormcloacks or imperials?
@@337dux yeah thats sad, i really enjoy the rebuild of the thiev guild and i like the building from small fry to boss. In Oblivion i think the dark brotherhood was the coolest, but the immersion is sometimes really off, because you have no consequences ever. Nothing matters really, like beeing mage grandmaster and have never done one spell is weird. The combat system really lacks moves, im allways stuck with sneaky archer...because it is the only class that makes sense and is enjoyable.....and OP as Fuck. I also hated marriage in skyrim, take mara...BOOM you wife now. Fistbump. Many things are so lifeless in the games.
I often chose stormcloaks, but i also played imperials and i thought both sides suck immensly. I never finish the conflict because you end up with one city destroyed and i hate that. I wish you would get a new storyline to rebuild the city, so you get some enjoyment out of it, by making life good again. But Bethesda was to lazy for that. So i only finished it twice and never again.
I like the "Skyrim belongs to the north" meme, but i really believe that skyrim is more secured with the imperial help, but i hate that shitty red uniforms. So Im neutral and slauther them all for my Homie Shegorath and roleplay as Thiev/murderguild headmaster AKA the Godfather and be the hidden Faction behind the Throne of Skyrim. Hope Modders make a version were we can purge Skyrim for our own rebellion and smash all cities and castles. Would be epic
@@nikolah.8472 not always. Daggerfall and Morrowind were well written. The problem is the writers of those games and most of designers left during Morrowind development.

@@tominieminen66 Yeah. What I tend to do now, if I want a game that just released, is I'll wait at least 2 months whilst keeping track of community feedback and how the developer is addressing any issues that do crop up. Bugs and QOL issues + poor dev communication and slow updates = no buy.
If the game has issues, but the devs are addressing them quickly and communicating their plans, that's okay. If the game has no major issues, but the devs aren't communicating with their players, that's also okay.
The thing that's not okay, the thing you really want to avoid, are games where the players are reporting a bunch of serious issues and the devs are radio silent. Because when that happens, 99 times out of 100 they won't deliver what they promised. And the only way to identify those games is to wait. You usually can't predict that early on, because companies will go out of their way to bullshit you with marketing and "roadmaps".
Starfield had 1 writer, and his most recent writing credits were the plot holes and boring parts of Fallout 4. (He had nothing to do with Far Harbor and it's considered the best writing in the game).
Starfield's world feels kinda fake, like an amusement park. I mean shops are open 24/7 and the amount of NPCs who can't be killed is absolutely ridiculous, basically every named NPC is unkillable including shopkeepers. No more moments like in Skyrim how Ysolda can take over the shops in Whiterun if you kill the shopkeepers, the world is now static and doesn't react to your actions at all. It feels like a downgrade from what came before in story and exploration
Which is amazing because Skyrim felt like a huge downgrade from Oblivion and Morrowind

The entire point of Starfield is NG+. Todd made a game which has the sole purpose of being played over and over again.
Oh, and amusingly after it came out, according to the Steam achivements, less than 10% of the player base cared enough about the companions to even get one to max affection.
Did you know one of the power "parallel self" can only be unlock by maxing out affection with one of the companion name Barret? They give you every opportunity to romance him(man only), even after you keep friendzoning him MULTIPLE times, the option can still be access. Meanwhile you cant do the same with Andreja after only telling her you wanna be friends ONCE(there's no option to think about it, either friend or romance). Yes im still salty that i cant romance her.

I am so glad it was on Game Pass. I mean, it is fun for what it is I guess...? But I wouldn't pay for it. Not only does it has problem mechanics/gameplay wise but also story wise which is what I have the most issues with, I hoped they would get somewhat better since their earlier games, but tbh, it feels like it is going down faster than the Parker Solar Probe. Starborn... I just cannot get over that.
The real fucked thing about starfield and fallout4 is I kept picking up duct tape in starfield thinking it was adhesive still. It is not. 16:00

Starfield was just a tech demo for the new creation engine variant, Bethesda didnt wanna risk Fallout or Elderscrolls with this, so Starfield was shovelled out to test the engine
What i did to unlock sh*t talents was to set up several outposts, build the system ship port, find a planet with Gas, ship it to Another planet that had another material, but also shipped some of the gas to Another system that had another resource i needed to then system ship it back to the second planet, now i just set up a couple hundred storage units, and slept for several days, go back outside, collect all the resources, and craft Beams in the bulks, this would allow me to skyrocket in levels.
Obviously might be more demanding than the pig burning one, but atleast i don't need to restock on incendiary grenades in small amounts every time.
Nobody talked about the story, because there's not much to talk about. Like, the main story is worse and more generic than a mid of the road episode of Stargate. The only really unique part of it is the fact that there's no urgency to it all. There's no global crisis or emergency or need to do anything, the Constellation is driven purely by their own curiosity and can stop pursuing the dangerous "truth" at any moment. Before Starborn show up to start assaulting you, there's absolutely nothing pushing you to do the main quest, it's just another curiosity thread in this sandbox for you to "make your own fun". Even after the Starborn start "hunting" you, if you stop to think a little, the stakes are absolutely low. If the Starborn manage to beat you and gather all the artifacts, it wouldn't really matter for the larger world. Whoever gets all the pieces, actually leaves the universe in question, so it will have actually no impact on anyone else here.
There are side quests with some interesting ideas, but they don't go hard on any of them, everything is surprisingly low impact. The most consequential quest line is the pirate one, but besides occasional line of dialogue you dont' actually see any major changes in the world after one of two major factions in the world loses a whole fleet including their flagship. But then it's like with the settlers quest. You come across people from old Earth who were en route for centuries living in their ship, and this monumental happening, which should be mind-blowing for everyone involved is treated unbelievably casually. It's the same for basically everything.
Plus the dialogue is just bad. It was really hard for me to care for many story lines because half the time the game didn't give me a dialogue option matching my actual thoughts. Like when you find Star Trek the Motion Picture reference in the somehow sentient Juno probe. It tires to talk to you to get you on its side and if you don't just agree with it, you have like two options of argument against it, which are both really stupid and you see how the dialogue is blatantly setting you up for Juno to have a "clever" comeback. In Planescape Torment when faced with a similar question, you famously had 16 dialogue options.

Starfield really is a game that gets worse the more you play it. I almost immediately dropped it once I started getting Thu'ums. Thought the Skyrim theme was going to start playing.
Bethesda always have super high ambitions. And very little polish. The moment you do something Todd don't want you to. All immersion flies out of the window.
That's what bothered me with Oblivion. Nowadays all the jank is cute. But at the time I wanted to escape into a fantasy world and the game kept ruining my immersion.
Learn how bussines really works and then tell us mate.
I enjoyed the jank back then even more. It was so stilted to the point of being hilarious. I think it still has charm but Oblivion remake will never capture the black magic that game was for me all those years ago.

Because the fantasy world of videogames i tried to immerse myself in constantly failed and threw me out of the experience into a real world I tried to get away from. I didn't buy Shivering Isles because PC Gamer told me it was buggy crap. Now I wish I did. Because that game perfectly contextualises Oblivion. It's not an alternate reality. But a realm of madness. And silly. Completely janky absurdity.

Honestly, Starfield is pretty OKAY as a game. It's enjoyable. It's... fine. It has systems I like. Mods, once the creation kit is available, will make me come back to the game and probably play hours. But... as it is? I got like 90% of the way through the story and just... stopped. I just couldn't be bothered. I really couldn't. Side note: the knowledge that the end of the game is literally just "hey you're doing all this so you can do NG+" just also saps out a lot of motivation to actually FINISH the game. Because finishing the game means you're doing NG+. Which means the game NEVER ENDS story-wise. There is no "ending". It just goes on... forever. Repeating. Endlessly. In other words: the only motivation to complete a cycle is to get the fancy outfit and spaceship you get for doing so. That's it. You can literally build a custom ship better than the NG+ ship, by the way. It's a good ship, and if you don't spend a lot of time minmaxing your ship it's not as big of a dealbreaker, but I like the ship creation system. Therefore, I have like zero motivation to do it. Fun.
Total conversion mods are going to make this game into something really special. AS IS it's an 8/10 Bethesda game that is better than Fallout 4 but not quite the highs of Skyrim. Maybe the expansions will be something to do the base experience justice, but everyone new mods would come to save the game if needed or not.

I've watched fans of Bathesda games put up with this abuse for years now, and I no longer feel pity for them or disappointment towards Todd and his company. Their fans are going to have to learn to give up on them eventually cause the beatings will never stop if they stay.

Personally, I absolutely love Starfield. I have put 6 days into the game so far. However, I can also see that it is an acquired taste. And that it is not for everyone. If you don't really enjoy Bethesda games, then you aren't the targeted audience. However the video was hilarious.
Just because I like older Bethesda games doesn't mean everything they put out are good. One shouldn't consume the product just because of the company's branding, after all. Also, the team that made those older games is not here, and it shown.

I really enjoy Bethesda games and I'm definitely in the target audience. Skyrim and Fallout 4 are in my top five most played games on Steam, and I've played plenty of other Bethesda games in the past and loved them all. And futuristic space games are probably my favorite setting. But I have pretty much given up on Starfield. The only reason I kept playing for as long as I did was because it felt like it was right on the edge of becoming interesting, and then it kept just... not managing to do it. The story is the weakest main story Bethesda has ever written. The side quests aren't good enough to save it. The characters are so dead and boring that I couldn't bring myself to care about any of them. The NG+ mechanic makes it not really worth delving too deep into the crafting or base-building or ship-building systems since you're going to lose it all anyway. I spent a pretty large portion of my playtime trying to figure out why I was even doing whatever I was doing at the time because it felt pointless already, and I didn't even know about the NG+ thing yet.

Edit: there's a big difference in dream interpretation between starborn and dragonborn. A big difference between a dragon (tyrant) vs star (the noblest of people).
Edit 10:43 toxic people hate starfield. I was reading a review from someone who said they cried with the story of starfield because it reminded them leaving family for duty. The game was best for streamers who streamed it first. Was a money stream. Now everyone has fallen for the collective hate. Collective bullying I say.
