Closer look at the new Ghost Drone being trialled by the RAF & US Army

- Gunners from 15 Squadron of the RAF Regiment have been experimenting with a new type of drone.
The Ghost Drone, so called because of its ability to remain undetected, uses artificial intelligence to work out how noisy it sounds and what it looks like - from the target's point of view.
Flight Sergeant David Shaw showed Forces News how the drone works and explained what makes it different from other remotely piloted aircraft systems.

The battlefields look more and more like an aeromodelling meeting.
It comes with operator equipment ie an unwashed anorak, a thermos flask of sweet tea and some wilted cheese sarnies.
Finally, nerds get their day.

Lol....yep
It's exactly how it was made with 800 size parts
That's great but where do they find such tiny pilots?
Inside Lego boxes.
🤣
The borrowers of course.
In tiny pilot school. Where else??
That's why we kept Wales.

So it was a little anxious. First debut on UA-cam, give it a break for God sake!😂
That's what I thought, could they not balance the rotor blades? I balance all the props on my RC planes before mounting them, make a huge difference.
An issue that will go away the second the vehicle has lost contact with the ground - Don't ask me why but it's just like that.
Lol I was hoping I wasn't the only one noticing the lack of rotor balancing
@@mikebergman1817 exactly, I’ve been flying model aircraft my entire life and a balanced prop makes a huge difference in performance. There are many smarter than me that can explain exactly why, but I think it’s pretty obvious
Amazing how the old RC helicopters from Toys r Us ended up being applicable military training.
I actually think that's where some of the RC comes from, then it gets reintroduce later when tech makes it more capable.
sure almost all tech comes from military first lol

Wait to till you here about video games have a chokehold on military development.
@nevermankind nope it all came from the hobby space
Love the way they say you can't 'hear' it approach, yet when the video plays, they play music over voice and never let you actually 'HEAR' the drone

12,000ft on a single two bladed rotor is pretty impressive.
And on a short flight time.
Meh. Indian HAL RUAV-200 can fly upto 18,000 feet. Required because against China, the valleys alone lie higher than 12,000 feet (in Ladakh region).
@@death_parade HAL RUAV-200 is a lot bigger though weighning 200kg vs this 17kg drone. I also imagine the type of operations between the two would be quite different so comparing them wouldnt really be too useful/necessary.
@@caseyjoyce8950 True that. I am actually more interested in what tech this "Ghost" drone uses to condition monitor its acoustic signature and then how it compensates for it.
Then it freefall back down.
Having previously worked in defense contracting, I’m willing to bet that this drone with less capabilities than an off-the-shelf DJI drone costs at least a few hundred thousand dollars each. The DOD has absolutely no idea how badly contracting companies are screwing them.
It costs $500k {classified info}
Yes whilst being louder and bigger (so wayyy easier to detect and shoot down), a DJI drone can stay up in the air even when all propellors are broken in half (say if someone shot at it), this thing won't stay up if even the slightest bit of its proppelor broke
I was thinking the same thing 😂
Well done lads keep up the hard work
A full 35 seconds until the words "game changer". Most impressive.
No ivanna, it's just 32 😂

So many game changers!
I really hope that term along with revolutionize and disrupt get taken out of the english language.
everything is game changer for western these days, but the reality in battlefield is not always as it promoted
What an awesome piece of innovation!
How noisy is it with the 2 blade configuration? I know the old Huey's made a whop-whop-whop sound that was much noisier than the when the upgraded to four blades.
One of the most beautiful machine in my opinion. Long time ago I made a similar design a stick like helicopter. But the latest direct drive brushless motor systems are quite amazing with the torque and efficiency. Really perfect combination of hardware.
You don't want to be an infantry man in today's wars. (and going forward) Its just frightening now the way you can be seen from afar and not even know you're being seen. How do you fight against such a situation?
Horizon to horizon' Multi Telescopic Lidar? Does, or might that be able to even work? Tho' that would also pick up everything else in the sky, even birds. Up grade' if even possible, and bring out the Awac's. '\😶/'
They tell that drones can see everything lol. On a screen there are many things that you would see better with naked eyes, and thermal cameras don't help when it's hot.
You die
I'd rather have drones to tell me what's behind that building or over the next hill, rather than having to go look for myself.
It’s called HAVING BALLS son wtf NORMANDY VIETNAM DESERT STORM FALLUJAH
Any meanwhile, Iranian drones are loud enough to drown out a Metallica concert.
Ukrainians call them "scooter" or similar.
To be fair, it is only used one time and does not need to be space age tech.
The sound would not be as much of a problem if it was used at night, but Russians did not read the instructions.
And a good psyops team would use that as an advantage like they did in desert storm and the first part of the 2nd middle east invasion. Attach speakers onto tanks and crank out metal at full volume to scare their opponants.

Wonder if the final version will be painted something sky colour ish rather than black? Maybe it does not matter at 12K feet.
More likely they'll paint them haze grey, but yeah, at that height and size, small difference.
@@AnimeSunglasses Yeah, that's the colour I was thinking.
I was about to make this comment. Final version should not be black. Or maybe two variants, for night and day.
If you can have a bunch of remote wireless charging points this thing can retreat to in (semi) autonomous mode, you can move towards a permanent presence behind enemy lines. I mean : how much space does this thing need in that case. It can even be in a covered place it can enter from the sides.
Amazing stuff !

honestly not a bad idea. I saw another one of these chopper drones that's the size of a hand. imagine having small cake plate sized landing pads every 10km or so that have batteries underground and a wireless charger on top. they could even be placed up on a tree out of sight.

The footage of the blurred out laptop was just inspirational.
1:50 Stack another prop up top and you can carry munitions to surveil and if necessary eliminate a dangerous target in a hidden position before they realize they have been spotted.
It needs a laser designator along with cameras.
I would imagine it can already paint targets for a Reaper visit.
So if the concept of four rotor blades was so pivitol to the first stealth chopper in Vietnam and beyond, why would this only have two rotor blades, the four blades allowed the rotor head to turn at a slower rate keeping the sonic crack at the end of the blades down yet it provided greater lift and speed, then this would seem to be extremely applicable here, just a thought. Still a great concept, with the combustion engine extending the flight time to 55mins. Very cool indeed.
4 blades increases drag and weight, and reduces endurance.
Having 4 rotors means having 4 ESCs.
The problem with having 4 ESCs is the sheer amount of RF noise they generate. Its enough to interfere with the VTX equipment on your FPV setup. The less wiring and the less mosfets, the better i guess.
Also I guess in terms of aerodynamics, its supposed to be audibly lerss quiet aswell. I think quadcopters are by nature pretty noisy because of all the complex aerodynamics going on, and using this setup is much more simpler and easier to account for acoustics maybe?
Also I think its slightly more efficient to use one massive main rotor. Idk for sure though.
Combustion engines would be cool but that would mean having to ship the fuel out to wherever you want to set it up.
Thats not exactly usefull for the stuff this helis gonna be doing. If your gonna be using fuel, you might aswell use a bigger more expensive drone anyways.
@honkhonk8009 He is talking about 4 rotor blades on a helicopter mast, each half is a blade. Not 4 quad copter blades.
Small drone, small rotor,s no sonic claps. Right?
Simple answer, flat packing.
Awesome !!!
If the Ghost Drone uses 4 blades instead of 2, my assumption is that the rotor would spin slower with no loss of velocity, and being more power efficient, it could fly for a bit longer time and farther. I might be wrong though.
But the downside to that would be a larger footprint and more weight.
a single rotor is more efficient than 4 rotors
@@alexspiridonov4014 the discussion about a single rotor with either 2 or four blades.
@@alexspiridonov4014 If you read my statement again, I didn't say 4 rotors but 4 blades (instead of the 2 blades in the video). Hope this clarifies.

Very smart , very glad our friends the British and US Army are doing this.
Those must be used in the future to automatically recognize fire and alert when hot temperatures reach the point to prevent catastrophic event that affect nature and must be changed into white color to reflect the hot waves
I remember seeing stuff like this in the 90s, like, woh remote controlled helicopters that make no sounds. It's been amusing to watch militaries be liek 20 years behind schedule adding these things.
basically. yes
xD well this one is not out of plastic and 2nd it can fly 12t feet and 55min... unlike your 100gr plastic toy which could fly 10feet? for 10min?

Curious what this does the existing platforms don't do, with the right optics I think current systems are able to do surveillance without being heard.
There is probably a lot of intentional profit seeking going on from the company who made and sold this. But at the same time single rotors are supposed to be superior in terms of energy efficiency and payloads. Consumer drones are smaller and I suppose do not need to carry such big optics and fly for so long. Duty cycle could also be an issue. Perhaps this thing can do multiple flights all day every day? Something from DJI would wear out even if you swapped the batteries.

@@garethballard2159 Yes. They just steal the high tech ideas from the west and copy it!
@@tomrogers9467 they do steal a lot of IP. But this also frees up their resources to do
The East is stealing up a march on the West. I know my country was generations behind and nowadays its already one- two generations behind at most and catching up in some areas and even exceeding in some.
China is the world leader in AI, drones, swarms, long range anti ship missiles(from ground or air or sea), long range air to air missiles etc.
Their anti drone tech is also up there if not the best since they got the best drones and AI, so of course they would also have the best countermeasures.
These drones wont even be able to get close to Chinese shores, and even if they do, the damage they do would be a joke. Even a 1000 of them won't do anything to china. China's new "SHORAD" systems like type 625E with 6 barrel Gatling gun shooting explosive rounds would utterly wreck any drone. Not just 6 barrel Gatling but also has 8 short range anti air missiles for longer range or to take out bigger more expensive drones.

Back around Summertime, 2022, the U.S. announced that in addition to sending the 'Switchblade 300 and 600 kamikaze drones to Ukraine, they would also be sending the 'Phoenix Ghost'. I never heard if it was sent, or any details pertaining to its function/capabilities.
So, it's logical to ask a few questions:
Is this 'ghost' the Phoenix Ghost? Or, do they share a common lineage, but the Phoenix Ghost is a U.S. made variant? Or, is there no relation between the two 'ghosts'?
This isn't the Phoenix Ghost from what I can tell. Also this drone above is a US made drone. It is made by a company called Anduril in California.
@@SCscoutguy Thanks for the reply and the name of the manufacturer. I had assumed (with no substantiation) that the Phoenix Ghost was made by the same company making the 'Switchblade' drones (Aerovironment). The downside to your reply is that I still know absolutely nothing about the Phoenix Ghost other than a claim that it was supposed to be well tailored the the type of combat Ukraine was fighting last Spring. Come to think of it, very little has been mentioned about the Switchblade's use in the field - either the frequency or effectiveness. I thought about using one of my old 3d rc helis as a camera drone once. But the vibration from the single rotor was pretty harsh.
Gotta balance the blades and check the blade tracking. I've had tons of smooth FPV and HD footage from my 3D collective pitch helicopters. Can get really bad vibes from fixed pitched multirotors too. Also, nowadays all the fixed pitched drones have built-in gimbals and/or software based onboard image stabilization (GoPro).
