  • Gunners from 15 Squadron of the RAF Regiment have been experimenting with a new type of drone.
    The Ghost Drone, so called because of its ability to remain undetected, uses artificial intelligence to work out how noisy it sounds and what it looks like - from the target's point of view.
    Flight Sergeant David Shaw showed Forces News how the drone works and explained what makes it different from other remotely piloted aircraft systems.

    So if the concept of four rotor blades was so pivitol to the first stealth chopper in Vietnam and beyond, why would this only have two rotor blades, the four blades allowed the rotor head to turn at a slower rate keeping the sonic crack at the end of the blades down yet it provided greater lift and speed, then this would seem to be extremely applicable here, just a thought. Still a great concept, with the combustion engine extending the flight time to 55mins. Very cool indeed.

    • @RotorWorks
      @RotorWorks Рік тому +7

      4 blades increases drag and weight, and reduces endurance.

    • @honkhonk8009
      @honkhonk8009 Рік тому +8

      Having 4 rotors means having 4 ESCs.
      The problem with having 4 ESCs is the sheer amount of RF noise they generate. Its enough to interfere with the VTX equipment on your FPV setup. The less wiring and the less mosfets, the better i guess.
      Also I guess in terms of aerodynamics, its supposed to be audibly lerss quiet aswell. I think quadcopters are by nature pretty noisy because of all the complex aerodynamics going on, and using this setup is much more simpler and easier to account for acoustics maybe?
      Also I think its slightly more efficient to use one massive main rotor. Idk for sure though.
      Combustion engines would be cool but that would mean having to ship the fuel out to wherever you want to set it up.
      Thats not exactly usefull for the stuff this helis gonna be doing. If your gonna be using fuel, you might aswell use a bigger more expensive drone anyways.

      There is probably a lot of intentional profit seeking going on from the company who made and sold this. But at the same time single rotors are supposed to be superior in terms of energy efficiency and payloads. Consumer drones are smaller and I suppose do not need to carry such big optics and fly for so long. Duty cycle could also be an issue. Perhaps this thing can do multiple flights all day every day? Something from DJI would wear out even if you swapped the batteries.

      China is the world leader in AI, drones, swarms, long range anti ship missiles(from ground or air or sea), long range air to air missiles etc.
      Their anti drone tech is also up there if not the best since they got the best drones and AI, so of course they would also have the best countermeasures.
      These drones wont even be able to get close to Chinese shores, and even if they do, the damage they do would be a joke. Even a 1000 of them won't do anything to china. China's new "SHORAD" systems like type 625E with 6 barrel Gatling gun shooting explosive rounds would utterly wreck any drone. Not just 6 barrel Gatling but also has 8 short range anti air missiles for longer range or to take out bigger more expensive drones.

    Back around Summertime, 2022, the U.S. announced that in addition to sending the 'Switchblade 300 and 600 kamikaze drones to Ukraine, they would also be sending the 'Phoenix Ghost'. I never heard if it was sent, or any details pertaining to its function/capabilities.
    So, it's logical to ask a few questions:
    Is this 'ghost' the Phoenix Ghost? Or, do they share a common lineage, but the Phoenix Ghost is a U.S. made variant? Or, is there no relation between the two 'ghosts'?

    • @SCscoutguy
      @SCscoutguy Рік тому

      @@SCscoutguy Thanks for the reply and the name of the manufacturer. I had assumed (with no substantiation) that the Phoenix Ghost was made by the same company making the 'Switchblade' drones (Aerovironment). The downside to your reply is that I still know absolutely nothing about the Phoenix Ghost other than a claim that it was supposed to be well tailored the the type of combat Ukraine was fighting last Spring. Come to think of it, very little has been mentioned about the Switchblade's use in the field - either the frequency or effectiveness. Given their cost was much lass than a Javelin and offered grater range, I had high expectations.
