In this video, Bobby from Dark Horse Marine walks through the installation and wiring of the battery switch, breaker, solenoid, and rocker switch. And there is a bonus section at the end with a review of products used and tips to make your install look professional!

The one thing I would suggest is to use a square instead of a level if you’re doing this with your boat in the water for obvious reasons.
I have a Lewmar windlass fitted in an anchor locker bolted to a bulkhead. 20 years old but away from the wind and rain. I operate from within the boat cabin using a built-in control unit with a basic up and down switch, again all covered. Suddenly there’s no power there or when I plug in the up and down control on the windlass itself. What’s the most likely cause and where do I look!? Everything else connected to batteries works fine. It’s completely dead, as I say!?
@@michaelinkster4977 Hi Michael, thanks for sharing your windlass problem with us. My first advice to anyone who is having issues with a powerless windlass is to take the rode out of the anchor locker to avoid injury while diagnosing the problem. Once it's been removed, steer clear of the chainwheel and put 12 volts directly to the two post or wires to the motor. If you have a 3 wire windlass put negative to the center post and positive to the outside post. If the motor doesn't turn, then replace it. If it turns, connect the wires to the solenoid and keep working your way back to the battery. If you're still having issues, please email us at info@darkhorsemarine.com

You have some VERY professional videos and they are full of SOLID information that is easy to follow and understand. I was looking for some ideas on how to lay out/build out an anchor locker, windlass and anchor nest I am adding onto a customers boat and I came across your video. I gotta say, you are very professional and know what you are talking about. Great video editing as well. 100% worth subscribing.
You're fuse or breaker must be as close as possible to the battery. Code requires it to be within 8 in of the battery. This is so that all of the cable leading from the battery to the solenoid and the winch is protected by the fuse. The way you have it set up you have a whole bunch of cable connected directly to a battery without a fuse. If you have a short circuit anywhere in that cable between the battery and the fuse, it will burn the boat up. Since people follow these videos and your advice for an installation, you should make the correction in the video.

Why isn't the thickness of the wire the same leading to the main unit? It doesn't make sense that the wire is twice as thin 12 inches from the windlass unit.

Is it OK to extend the wires from the winch motor to the solenoid instead of running large gauge wire all the way up to the winch? Easier to run smaller wires to the front of the boat and keep the breaker and solenoid closer together in the engine compartment. Seems like the heavy gauge wire needs to be between the breaker and Solenoid....

Can I just use the switch on the circuit breaker instead of adding the orange colored switch AND should the circuit breaker be close to the battery? How close?
Hi Sam, The distance between the breaker and the battery does not matter. Sorry, I don’t understand the question about using the circuit breaker instead of the orange switch. Please elaborate.
Hi Bobby. Thanks again for the great videos. I am planning a pair of foot switches on the foredeck and also intend mount the rocker switch in the cockpit of my boat, so there will be two stations for raising/lowering thee anchor. I ordered the appropriate contractor solenoid (#0052531). Looking at the wiring diagram, I see that there are three 16-18 awg wires that are shared between the two sets of switches. Can you tell me the best way to make these connection?
You can use a terminal block with connecting jumpers.

and my V1 unit motor has 3 posts no wires.
Hello, yes, the V1 windlass does not use a reverse polarity motor like the V700. With the V1, the battery ground goes directly to the center post of the motor and the positive goes to the center post of the 68000318 solenoid. Please let me know if you’re clear on this.
I have a question, Lewmar V700 after the up or down operation should the motor immediately break or continue for second ?

Does the solenoid come with the winch, I’m not seeing one listed in the contents and also I don’t see one in the manual.
Yeah it’s a bit confusing but it does come with it. And it’s also in the manuals second wiring diagram.
Mine goes down but wont go up. Anyone can help what the problem would be?
