Hope this makes someone smile. It yook me 32 years to finally finish a crossstitch. Started and heard my husband say for years how he always loved this picture. Finally got back to it and finished it for our 50th anniv. He had tears in his eyes when he saw it completed!😊

Pat, Thank you for being so real. You know, it is ok to scale back on things and do what makes your heart happy. We love you and I love being part of this group and we will continue to love you, watch you, support you even if you do not do so many projects at a time. Big hugs and love!

Thank you for saying it’s ok to change.our minds about starting a project. Sometimes we have to just say “no”! And that has to apply to things other than quilting. I’m 71 and i want to spend time with my hubby when he’s home. When he’s golfing or fishing, then that’s my quilting time. I live in a 55 and older community and am appreciating my hubby more every day. Thank you Pat!

Absolutely, I saw my Mother in Law live without her spouse for 30 years and she had plenty of time to sew after he was gone. I want to spend my time like you also. It's one thing if he is busy but if not I don't need to sew that day.

Yay for you Pat! No need to be stressed doing too many projects. Life is too short for that. Take time for yourself and enjoy each day! We love you and will continue to watch you every day. I loved this reminder today!

I've found that whenever most everything in my life is beyond my control, I seek out projects. Beautiful fabrics, patterns will result in something I will happily display or give to someone I love. That's the dream part. The reality is it piles up and I'm reminded daily that nearly everything is still beyond my control with no end in sight.
But the escape of watching videos at night, then ordering everything needed to complete it does give me some joy. Short-lived, but still joy.

When I retired I thought I would get all these quilts done and gardening, read books, and bird watching. Wellll hasn’t quite worked that way, I still quilt, but not as much as I thought, still garden but not as much as I thought, love to read, watch birds from the window. The stress we put on ourselves can be amazing. We thought it was work but it’s probably ourselves.

This is such a great insight! I retired last August a few months after losing my mom, and then in December lost my dad. Lots of other changes going on. I started doing a lot of quilting, but I am coming to realize that while I really enjoy quilting and love the fabric and tools and satisfaction, I don’t want my primary identity to be “quilter”. Lots of self-searching still to do, but I think my result will be to dramatically downsize my quilting supplies to just the things I really use and projects I really want to make and ramp other other activities, like the hiking I have been doing with my husband.

    • @michele6708
      @michele6708 2 місяці тому +10

Pat, I can definitely relate to your reassessment. I am doing the same thing at a really large scale. I got caught up in a couple of years of exuberance, collecting way too many tools and fabrics over the last few years in anticipation of retiring last August. I did a ton of sewing in the immediate aftermath, cranking out quilt tops or portions thereof and finishing UFOs from 25 years ago-yes really! Now I have a room stuffed to the gills with quilting supplies and am realizing that I actually don’t want my primary identity to be “quilter”. I will still be a quilter and I will continue to make quilts but I am going to be ruthless in determining which projects are exciting enough that I want to invest my time, effort and money into, while still exploring lots of other fun and exciting activities in retirement. I injured my wrist a few weeks ago, and despite approval to sew, I haven’t really been called to go back into my sewing room, which is confirming that I need to do this. In August I am going to do a dramatic destash to just the things I need for the projects I am excited to do and a small and super curated scrap inventory. From there I will buy fabrics for each pattern when I am ready to start it. I have between now and the end of August to use up supplies and to decide which projects, tools and fabrics to keep. The rest will be sold or donated. Wish me luck! 😅

@michele6708 if you destash any material that would make these beautiful dresses let me know. I started quilting full time in 2012 and my life took a turn to so many life happenings that swirled me into not being able to sew. I'm very slowly getting back into quilting now. I need a sewing buddy.😊❤

Retired recently. Kids far away. Plenty of time. Some days so overwhelmed by all the projects I have begun. Around Christmas I decided something similar. Work on one project UFO, one block of the month and one fun new thing. The rest remain dream projects which can be almost as fulfilling 🥰🥰 thanks, Pat for sharing so we all can relate.

You voiced what has happened in my life. I have so many projects I want to do or have started for family and friends but time seems to slip away so much faster than it used to. I retired four years ago thinking I'd have so much more time to quilt, garden, and cross stitch. So much happens that we have no control over- in my case losing my Mom , Dad, daughter-in-law, and helping our son raise their two girls- but this year I'm trying to organize and balance my days so there is time for me to enjoy creating again. It's comforting knowing that there is a community of us. Thank you for today's video. Have a wonderful day.

Thank you Pat for your video and your honesty and just everything you do! I am newish to quilting having only just retired at the beginning of 2023. I am not yet overwhelmed but do sometimes find myself unsure what to do next even though I have 4 or 5 projects started! Your video is such a good reminder to even us “young” creators to pace ourselves and take stock on occasion and just be kind to ourselves so that we can BE our best selves. Have a beautiful day!

Loved the video this morning with your Come to Jesus moment Pat. The problem is we want to do it all but there are only so many hours in a day! We still have our day to day things to get done. Being retired does give more flexibility but again there’s only so much a person can do in a day. I personally can’t be sitting at a sewing machine or sitting to do cross stitch for hours on end. Maybe I sew an hour or so a day and cross stitch is my evening activity. Right now I’m really spending time decluttering. I’m getting older and want to get my home in order so that my daughter and son don’t have to deal with items that I should have gotten rid of years ago. I have projects galore…which I’m not getting rid of any time soon…but I would have to live to be 182 like you Pat to do all the things 😂

I really thought it was just me and I was alone! Even though I am retired, it is hard to get out of neutral or first gear to get every planned thing done each day! Life happens‼️ Feeling much better about myself, my sewing room & my stack of yet to be started projects‼️ Thank you again my Dear‼️💕😉

I completely relate to having the pile. I often have to forgive myself and just say “It is ok”. Every month I resolve to not purchasing anything new but you know what happens, I see something so cute, so unique, something just right, and so new stuff arrives. I need to show myself grace. I need to review more older things and maybe just move them on to a new home. Thanks for all you do.

Pat sometimes I feel anxious from all the projects you’re doing. So glad you took a step back to reassess the amount of projects to work on. While quilting is your business it’s important to feel passionate about which projects and what you are communicating to your viewers. You will figure it out and grow from it. Wishing you the best.

Pat, I'm turning 74 soon. I GET where you are. My quilting room is full of patterns and fabric. I cannot possibly live long enough to do what's in there - never mind what I will undoubtedly get excited about and buy in the future. I feel some urgency about making the ones I really love at this point and am trying to let go of the feeling of obligation about the projects I am less enthusiastic about than when I purchased them. It's weird how quickly I got old!! LOL. But quilting is supposed to bring me joy, and that has become my focus. JOY!

Pat, those "Come to Jesus" conversations can be difficult, particularly when you have been an over achiever for so many years. I love your philosphy of working on what brings you joy. That is so much healthier for us. As we get older our priorities change and we really need that balance. Breaking both your wrists and twice dealing with cancer absolutely impacted your path.
You are one strong lady. Watching you has encouraged me to believe that I can accomplish my quilting projects despite dealing with chronic illnesses. There is no reason for me to pressure myself to churn out quilts several times a year. Working at my pace is ok.
Thank you for candidly sharing with us.

So now I have a day planner. 5 smallish chores. Tick off then go to my sewing room and create. Made a world of difference having a schedule. I am more focused.

Thanks Pat for showing us your true human side. I overloaded myself last year and tried to please everyone. I started a lot of quilting projects and then discovered I did not like them or did not have time to work on them. I sat down one day and told myself that I did not need this much on my plate, life is too short. I sorted my fabric and donated most of it. I sorted my projects and gave some to friends that liked them and kept only what I liked and what I knew I would finish. I am very happy with the decisions I made and now have much more time to spend with my family which is my biggest priority. I love your videos and all the tip, tricks and sew alongside I will continue to watch.

I retired three years ago and thought the same as you. I filled these last years with getting "caught up" on a lot of UFOs and planned quilts, along with many, many sew sampler projects. Now, I'm being a lot more judicious about what I sew. If a sew sampler pattern or old ufo project gives me "meh" vibes I don't do it and either give it away or sell the fabric or make something that gives me the feels...which means it either builds a skill or offers learning a new technique or I just love it too much to pass it up. I've decided the time I have to sew is precious and limited so what I fill it with needs to fully fill my soul too and not just provide a to do list check off. Ps. I so love your videos and all the things you share. Never miss a post. Thank you for all that you do!

Pat, today’s topic is perfect for me! Retired 6 years ago, thought I would get so much quilting done, and now I need that “come to Jesus” conversation with myself. (And yes, we used that phrase at work alllll the time!) Thank you so much for being so real with us!
I cross-stitch, too, and now that I use CraftOptics lenses it’s so much easier to work on high-count fabrics. Love them!
Fun (or not so fun) fact…I broke my right wrist in a fall in May 2019. I feel your pain over losing sewing time to a broken wrist. So glad your injuries haven’t slowed you down 😊

Hi Pat, Thanks for sharing your experience and for your vulnerability through that process. It will help us all be aware of engaging with projects and be judicious with our time management so we don't become overwhelmed with the to do list. When retired, we will have much more time to sew, but still have limited time to complete projects. We need to live to be 182 or move things out! It makes sense to consider working on a smaller version or a portion of a pattern. It is good for us to let things go when they are no longer serving us, feeding our joy, and keeping us engaged in our hobbies. My local quilt shop has a free section and allows us to share books and patterns with her customers and it's a win-win!

Thank you for being so real in your videos. I retired last November and couldn't wait to sit and sew whenever I wanted. I was even thinking I'd sew so much that I could sell what I made. After working at a desk/computer for almost 30 years, sitting at a sewing desk confined in a room was too similar. What I love: watching your videos, collecting/touching fabric, and creating a sewing space. Yes. I enjoy sewing as well. Just not in huge chunks at a time. Right now, I belong to a group at church where we make clothes to send to a mission in Jamaica for girls who are in orphanages and/or have been rescued from trafficking, etc. I will quilt and make other projects as well, but will most likely never sew to sell. I'm okay with that. :)

I just recently decided to step back and pick and choose those that really spoke to me. It’s almost like a weight has been lifted off of me. Thank you so much for your words of wisdom. They really hit home for me today♥️.

I am where you are. I’ve been overwhelmed for a while now, needing to step back or away from things. I’m just struggling with deciding where and what to step back from. I have actually sewn in a few weeks it’s all been quilting for others. Once my joy becomes a job it’s just not fun anymore. Hoping retreat later this week will help me find the “y” and put it back to Joy. Thank you Pat, for sharing where you are and how you’re working thru it. You are so relatable, I feel blessed I found your videos when I did. ❤❤😊😊

I like working on 1 projects at a time, and finish it almost to the end before I start another one. When i watch your videos of how many you do, I feel overwhelmed FOR YOU! so glad your going to pick projects you ❤️ ❤️ Love. ❤️ shouldn’t we all! Hugs,

Thank you for sharing that you are taking time for yourself by deciding on what projects you want to actually make. I'm relatively new to your channel and these past few months I felt like I was being a slacker by only making two quilts a month, working on my block a months quilt projects and adding on one of your fast and fun projects. I was looking forward to seeing what your creative mind would have done with the solar eclipse quilt and loved the fabric you purchased. It was fun seeing the solar eclipse quilt made by the other followers. I was motivated to make the quilt as an add-on project this week and am enjoying the process. Thank you 🌞

I can fully relate! When my youngest child started school full time I thought I’d have so much time to do things for me but I spread myself too thin and tried to do all the things and then the pandemic hit and I found myself with the kids at home and busy with helping them continue their schooling. After life went back to normal and I dove back into all the things and felt overwhelmed. It was now just too much. I’ve learned to say no with no explanation and shelved some projects and fully cancelled some things. It’s okay to do just what brings you joy in the moment and for that joy to shift!❤

I know how you feel. I stopped collecting fabric for 2024. At 72 & having to take care of my husband who had a stroke 18 months ago, I don't have as much time to quilt. I can't participate in all the quilt alongs that I want to. I have to pick & choose, much to my dismay. I have a few things started to finish & I will dedicate most of my time & effort to Quilts of Valor. I have given family members each many quilts & have run out of recipients. I do love your videos!

I lost my husband in Nov. I’m no longer crying. I so enjoy your program. Please keep it up. I did approximately 25 yrs of cross stitch and loved it. A timely thought process that is in line with my thinking. Many of my guild friends are working on multiple projects while I do one at a time, I do think it is a good thing to have a hand project and a machine project in the hopper. I have found that my retired friends are feeling rushed to finish holiday projects, etc. I had enough urgency as a purchasing manager of an electronics company. There is always a matter of moderation in all things and will be different for everyone. I always enjoy your thinking out loud whether it be fabric or project choices. Do what is best for you and what brings you joy.

I was given the gift of early retirement and thought I would have time to do all kinds of things. But God had other plans for me. I needed the time to take care of my mom before she passed last year and at the same time my daughter went through divorce, she and her two preschool children lived with us. Pat, I watch you and FQS and want to sew along to create all the pretty quilts, can someone say FOMO (fear of missing out) and I have already stepped back and enjoy what others are making. I have done this cross stitch also.
I think it is good to pause and evaluate what is going on in life and adjust plans and expectations. Thank you for being real and sharing your thoughts. Have a good day.

I really enjoyed your video especially talking about your fabric and projects. I retired two years ago and thought I am going to make so many quilts and cross stitch projects and I have only completed one quilt. I also have five raised garden beds that I am growing my vegetables. My husband calls me a hoarder because of all of my fabric. I have tried to be better about buying fabric. The quilt shop that was close to me closed up so now I have to do more online shopping and then hide the packages when they arrive. I realized that I really need to start making projects or stop buying fabric and supplies. I am currently working on a block of the month from two years ago and hope to have this completed by the end of April and then will move on to the next project. I appreciate your honesty and your thought process. Thank you for all you do!

Funny you should bring today's topic up as my DH and I just had this discussion this week. Now I'm on the wrong side of 70, so tick tock. His take on this is that starting new projects is part of our creative journey. Finishing isn't necessary unless we're loving it. So, as an example, I just started and prepped a whole gardening quilt and finished appliqueing one block. And that's enough, thank you. So I'll put the rest into my baggie to go to my guild, see if anyone wants it, and if not,off to the Thrift Shop they'll go. I've supported the designer, happily made my favourite block, and I'm done. And that's okay. I have LOTS more fabric and ideas. Let the fourth be with you too.😊

I totally agree with you on the pressure we put on ourselves to make all the things. I had 9 unfinished quilts that were pieced and waiting for me to quilt. I decided I had to finish all of these quilts before starting something new. I am happy to say I have 7 projects completed and I am working on my 8th quilt. I will finish this one and go onto finish quilting my ninth quilt and then I will cool my jets and make only those projects that really excite me. Most of my quilts are donated through my Guild but I am going to stop pressuring myself and step back so I can look forward to my projects rather than feeling pressure to get them done. I’m glad you’re also making the decision to only make what makes you happy!
