Had to replace the front wheel bearings on my 15 Taurus SHO. Passenger side took 40 hits with a sledgehammer and hub buster, driver side took 3 hits lol but the driver side cv axle threads were actually oversized and the nut was tight coming off and on but weren't cross threaded. And for anyone wondering the axle nut for the taurus, flex and explorer is torqued to 258 foot pounds and the 4 bolts holding the bearing are torqued to 98 foot pounds. Great informative video!

Lol. You had me LOL'ing at the rotor being backwards to clean. You rock man! Thank you for clearly showing all the steps you took to replace wheel bearing and rear brakes and even explaining the difference between standard and HD brakes.

I'm really glad I no longer live where they salt the roads. I'm going to have to do this on my Flex this weekend. When something is frozen in like that it can really ruin your day, and since I don't have a shop setup right now, I'll be doing this outside in the driveway. Here's hoping it doesn't get stuck.

I just did another rear bearing on one but I used the hub buster tool. It was still a battle but a much shorter one! Check out my video with the hub buster if you’re not familiar with the tool.

Yup that's my luck right now. Stuck in my driveway in Michigan weather. Is there by chance I can spray some wd40 in there and let it sit for a few minutes to avoid the hassle?

Great job with the camera angles. You managed to help me see why this costs so much to change!

That goes to show how a fairly simple job can turn into a nightmare in short order. I have had to cut a bearing out of the knuckle before. I have a flex now but I had a Pontiac Montana SV6 for 9 year and had to replace a front bearing or two almost every year. And stuck guide pins are usually the reason I have to replace brakes... The pins seize up and the pads drag and bye bye pads and rotors. That's what happens when you live in Nova Scotia Canada near the ocean and they salt the roads like mad in winter.

Great camera placement and I especially like that you filmed a tough job. So many videos out there skip the hammering and heating so it looks like an easy job.

Love the sensor precaution. That would suck to break that sensor! Thank you!

Just about to take on this job on my 2013 Ford Flex. Fantastic to find your video. Thanks Tom. Good, clear, concise instruction. Appreciate the heads up on the removal, I'm likely to fall into the 50% that don't come off easy! but that's ok now that I have your video.

I feel your pain. Day one of 7 hours of work in 90 degree heat and it won't budge. I ruined the speed sensor cause it is also corroded in place. Will one wheel give you a light? I tried removing the entire knuckle to press it out. Again fail cause the tie rod is rusted in place. I literally wanted to kill shit and break stuff after today. Day 2 is tomorrow. What a freaking job I will never do again on 2 metals bonded together. Never again

That T40 only hold the rotor on so it does not drop on the assemblers head as it go down the line.
There are about fifty jobs with the car above the assemblers before the wheels go on.

Amigo es muy sencillo sacar ese rodamientos saca un un perno y pon un tornillo que te sirva como extractor y lo sacas mucho más fácil sin necesidad de calentar tanto

Are you changing the wheel bearing because it went bad or just because you’re back there doing the brakes that’s just a maintenance item

All that and no need to bleed the brake lines. I have a seized rear brake caliper on an 09 flex. Awful noise and $850 quote for fix. Considering options

Seems pricy for a caliper replacement. At least in my area anyways.

When I change my brakes and bearing on my car before I took the brake pad off you just take a big flat head screwdriver and put it between the brake pad and the drum and pull it towards you, it will push in the brake diaphragm so you can save the hassle by trying to twist and press in the brake diaphragm once you have it off, do that before you take the brakes off and you are good to go

Is this an all wheel drive Flex? Do you know if wheel bearing problems are common with the front wheel drive only Flex? Trying to learn what I can to do some of my own repairs.

You know you never said how many foot pounds you torqued the axle nut down to! I have seem some say 258 ft pounds but that seems like a lot

Wouldnt it be better to heat the aluminum instead of the steel it has a greater expansion rate than steel

    • @Tomsfoolery.
      @Tomsfoolery.  5 років тому

It also works as a heat sink and absorbs heat better than steel. So it's more difficult to get it to expand. If you heat the steel, it will expand and as it cools it will break loose.
