  • In this video my friend Ryan experiences Shanghai for the first time.
Ryan has been living in Taiwan for the past year, and flew here this morning straight from a trip in Thailand. Ryan will be working in Shanghai for the foreseeable future, and has no previous experience of Mainland China, so let me know what kind of videos you'd like to see us do together!

I've been living in China now for a couple months and it is very different.I came to work in China, aside from some culture shock, I could fit in with the community. I can enjoy travel and adventure or riding the subway and go to the mall all without the threat of being killed. The kids are not being shot in school, they're just learning and growing. The people are all given meaning and purpose and don't act out a sense of hopelessness and having nothing to lose. It is very different.Having been studying and working in the USA for 5 years, I can tell you it is much safer to live in China. Things are not perfect there in China, but at least it is improving while life in western countries going downhill as poor getting poorer. Glad you love China so much. Hope you will stay. Thanks for your video !

why do people always put this line in their comment "Things are not perfect there in China" or something similar along the line? Nobody expects China to be perfect. Even US and Canada are not perfect, and people don't expect them to be perfect. What kind of thing or how perfect do people expect from China? No one is perfect in this world. No country is perfect in this world. So why expect China to be perfect? It's just so puzzling why people always add "China is not perfect" or " it needs improvement" something like. I find it so strange to have this line in their as if China is expected to be perfect. This is so silly and arrogant to expect a huge country like China to be perfect. I mean China is very nice and more than good enough to live comfortably.

Western media never shows what China is like.
I am a Chinese living in a small country in the South Pacific where the indigenous people are of African ancestry. I thought that China and Africa were backward because of what I saw in old Chinese Kung fu movies and Hollywood movies of Africa. It was not until about three years ago when I realised that China and Africa were not backward countries as I originally thought. That was when I first began watching videos of China and Africa on youtube. It was through UA-cam that I got to know a lot of things I never knew of.

I was on a similar boat as you, til I realize China had advanced so much the last two decade. China don't have many media outlet to the world as per western countries, so we rarely heard of what is like around the world til internet social media become a more popular thing, where people start getting to see how other countries are like other than how the world being portrayed by their own country where the person is in.

@@JohnSmith-sm7ez So tell me when you start seeing these things because I've never seen these before til China open up to the world. I don't see these in 80s 90s. I am talking world media not media within a country. Actually since you mention it I have saw many western country promotional media in those years instead. Now social media is a thing, ordinary people get to see a real country within, how people live and what it is like. Why is it so bad to actually learn what a country is like instead of pretending a giant big building is not there when it is right in front of your eyes.

Yeah, Chongqing is a good bet. I was there yesterday. And even though I live in Hong Kong, I still found the place very impressive. The fact that its all built on steep banks along two massive rivers meant everything involved some clever planning and designs. As a Civil Engineer, my mind was in overdrive thinking about how everything were put together. Honestly, just don't bother with the cable car though. I couldn't order my ticket online because I don't have a Chinese ID number, the queue was 5 hours long so I just took the monorail but found there was very little to see around the South station. The Town Planning Exhibition Centre was great though! A lot of before and after photos and how the city evolved over the last 70 years.
Chengdu is great too! The people are soft-spoken and generally more chilled. The place is clean and modern. Kind of like seeing what China as a whole could turn into in the future. The Eastern Suburb Memory is probably one of the best Factory-turned-Art district I have been to and I have been to the several in Europe and the ones in China. Place is so big and have so many quirky things to see.
If you down that end, you should also checked out Leshan for the Buddha statue and Emeishan for the view and Taoism temples.

China is a great country with great future in my option. United States has been changed so much for the past decade American used to be confident and nice to each others but now days a lot of problems have been rising which made the society more divided. But I think United States still have a lot good things and i had been enjoying it very much. I really hope both country will work things out.

I visited the Bund for the first time about 7 years ago. For some reason, it was totally underwhelming. Maybe the reason is that I was already middle-aged and had seen the Manhattan skyline for half a dozen times and Dubai two times, among others. So, the Bund skyline was nothing special. But, the nature in China is amazing, The Li River near Guilin for example.

if you look at it from another angle. the Chinese government's foresight to establish its sovereign net shares in the fruits of digital age. US has its Google, Amazon, Netflix and so on. China has its Alibaba, Tencent, Baidou, and Bytedance.
EU has none. Russia has its sovereign net as well. Imagine if China doesn't have its sovereign net.

Chinese government did not block them. It is just that those companies did not want to follow Chinese laws that govern the internet, so these companies opted not to operate in China physically. However, people in China can still access those sites using VPN, and it is not a big deal, the government won't harrass you over it if you access them.

You can access Baidou in the US, but you can't access UA-cam in China (at least not officially), etc., etc. In other words, Chinese websites are not blocked in the West, but Western sites are blocked in China. Whether or not this is a good thing is debatable, and I can imagine good arguments on either side, but it is a fact.

I’ve been living in Taiwan for about 14 years now. Ive only been to Taipei a few times. Taipei is not representative of Taiwan. It rains there most of the time. Things cost more money than the rest of Taiwan. I live in Taichung in the middle on the west coast (right across the Taiwan Strait from China.) it’s very easy to live here and there’s no shortage of teaching jobs for foreigners. I just want to set the record straight. A lot of foreigners end up in Taipei because it’s closer to the airports. They miss out on what Taiwan is really like. My wife and I have been to China a few times and there are some beautiful places and the people are very nice. The same goes for Taiwan.

It has a little bit of a bad rep amongst people from other provinces in China but having traveled extensively and lived in a couple of cities I feel it is an easy place to live and work for foreigners and given a choice I would choose it over other cities in Mainland China.
I still feel Taipei is the friendliest city I've been to in China and Taiwan seems to preserve traditional Chinese culture a lot better than Mainland China but I also very fond of Shanghai. Both Taipei and Shanghai are very good and safe places to work and live (apart from the summer humidity)

Do you know how much traditional Chinese culture there is? What traditional Chinese culture can a province that is isolated beyond the continental shelf retain that surpasses that of the Mainland? What little they have is even worse than Nanjing.
The funniest thing is that the Taiwanese don't want to recognize themselves as Chinese, and they want to emphasize that they have preserved more traditional Chinese culture than the mainland, what is this if not schizophrenia?😂

Taiwanese politicians use Chinese cultural relics to please the Japanese, and even use various means to "accidentally destroy" cultural relics, making some cultural relics to disappear legitimately. I don't think Taiwan has preserved Chinese cultural traditions better, and I don't even agree with the Taiwan authorities. In an attempt to protect China's traditional culture, they began to revise textbooks 20 years ago and even began to teach the younger generation the sad behavior of denying that they are Chinese. Once Taiwanese lose their identity, where will Taiwan go? sorrow

@@solas1183 True, solas1183. However, a little understanding of Chinese history - the real one, not one that is pushed by Western Media or its subjugates - will show that when the Nationalists (Kuomintang) fled the Mainland after losing the massive support of the Chinese people in the Civil War, it also robbed the entire treasury of China and packed as much museum relics and art which were sent to their last place of refuge - Taiwan. Meanwhile, in places like Beijing, the "Imperial Old Summer Palace" which was pillaged, ransacked and burnt to the ground by British and French forces in 1860, remained ruined and desolate - its remnants preserved for posterity as a reminder of what happened when the country was too weak to resist foreign invaders. Surely, you cannot be serious that the Chinese Government rebuild that palace and yet, many parts have been restored (see: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Old_Summer_Palace ).
Being in just one or two cities of China and visiting just a few tourist trap centers doesn't reveal the depth of the country's efforts in preserving its cultural and historical heritage - something that MOST Chinese are proud to adhere to in one form or another - with the exception of the "100 years of humiliation". Until you have seen BOTH countries checking out the preserved cultural relics and artifacts in both extensively, making some preconceived judgement may be a bit hasty even if it is of one's own opinion which can be misconstrued as being "one-sided", yes?
One final point - imagine you are a space alien in a spacecraft that landed upon on Earth in the middle of "Death Valley" in northern Mohave Desert, looked around and then, reported that because you see little signs of life, declares that the Earth is uninhabited. Sure, that's your opinion in the end but is it the right one?

I view culture more as reflected by the people and how they go about their lives rather than by the number of artifacts and relics but I respect your view also. It's just a different one
