Love how the series is shaping up Ben! You and Elliot have a great rapport too. Ngl, Dune has never been something I've read or got into, but I would definitely put that special edition hardback on my shelf.
Thanks Linus! Finally an avenue to vent my intrusive design thoughts. I'd love love of those 70s artworks on the wall above my Dune popcorn bucket too.
We had lots of fun with making jokes about "DUNC." My original post on twitter was actually DMCA'd which also may have added to why it spread so much. Thanks for the credit. Some great commentary on the book covers!
You know, i am a bit of a basic Joe But star wars and lord of the rings are some easy pics. Full of history and crazy artistic choises. But any relatively old franchise (or even publications) would be interesting anyway. It's going to be great ^^ !
@@BenMarriottLord of the Rings and James Bond immediately come to mind! I also think it’d be fun to take a look at album art design across a band/artist’s discography!
2:09 I loved that you called it the “Ten Commandments” font, this one I recognize all the time and it’s actually near and dear to my heart... a little backstory: I worked as the designer at a custom engraving/trophy shop and I can attest to the Flareserif being a very bold, classical looking choice (and surprisingly versatile) it was one I sort of “inherited” from old jobs/returning customers and at first I tried to go with a more modern option and really pushed against using it (I thought it looked dated initially) but after awhile, in its own right, wore on me until became my one of my “go-tos” when a customer wanted a title plate (but didn’t know what typeface they wanted) Needless to say... it’s on a lot of trophies floating around out there (you’ll probably notice it a ton now! That’s how it seems to go in the world of design! Lol)
I love the brazilian book covers, illustrated by Pedro Inoue. The art style reminds me of paintings with an epic tone, setting the mood and teasing a specific scene.
Honestly I absolutely love the 2021 movie tie-in cover on the left. It seems you guys aren't the biggest fans of minimalist designs but I just think the dune forming almost an eclipse, or black hole is just gorgeous. I believe it was also used for the soundtrack, but I wish it was the main movie poster because it looks miles better than the main one.
So fun! i would love to see a video reviewing more of the international covers-- without exposing myself i work with the dune covers and we have some really cool ones. one of my favorites is the Indonesian edition (which splits the first books into 2, and both are so cool), as well as the Polish editions with covers by Wojciech Siudmak
I personally really like the 50th anniversary designs, and the others. I have the first three on my shelf (currently reading the 2nd) and they look really cool stacked together. I like how each of them has their own unique colour palette to distinguish them.
I'm so glad you looked at the hardback copy. That is the one I own, and I think it looks even better in person. The execution of the repeated rotated shape for all four letters works so much better in my opinion than the movie version.
You miss the point with the first Dune cinema poster: The blue is a symbol of the Atreides coming to Arrakis. The Part 2 poster reveals Arrakis and the desert power.
Hard to believe there was no mention of the Gerry Grace book covers. I think they were on paperbacks in the 1980s. It looks like the third book in the line-up of four you show for 90s releases (at 20:09) uses a bit of the Gerry Grace art. They had huge title text in metallic print, and the front and back artwork of the set all lined up into a single piece. These were the editions that I used to see in every bookshop as a kid, and got me interested in reading the book.
Two of my favorite Aussies in one video? I like and subscribe. Plus now I know the two main ingredients to gaining a massive social media following are (a) be Austrailian, and (b) change how I pronounce the word Dune.
I'm split on the square grid on the book cover though I was hoping you'd cover this after talking about the newest movie DUNCs... I agree it works better here - I think removing one of the inner lines to define the middle horizontal in E would weaken it. One of those intentional choices!
Yeah, having the exact same shape without interference really makes it work so well . I guess it's mixing upper and lower case, but that bothers' me much less than the satification of the repetition.
9:00 the 2010s was a period where every poster was legally required to contrast a blue bit with an orange bit in order to satisfy the UA-cam algori... I mean the film studios marketing departments
6:55 ... Feyd Rautha, "I fart in your face!" When it came to the book covers and John Schoenherr's iconic dust jacket painting was shown I was "you a$$holes better not $hit on John Schoenherr!!" And you didn't, thank you! The Analog magazine serialization illustrations, the hardcover and paperback covers he did was what crystalized for me what Dune was all about! I read them in the '60's as a kid and he set the bar very very high!!
I went scrolling through the comments to see if anyone else mentioned that edition. As much as the new movies have overwritten the way I imagine the book, those portraits were how I saw the characters. They are perfection.
Omg I can't believe you guys picked the old soviet Bulgarian one :D. Was one of my dads favourite at home. FYI the spiral text is the logo of the publishers, promptly named "Library Galaxy".
Not sure if anyone spot this, but the Japanese posters at around 6:30 mark was created by the legendary Ikegami Ryoichi, the creator of the manga “Crying Freeman”.
Ok, I was so hyped for this video as I am hyped for Dune. And yes it was everything I wanted, the crossover of the year! Great job guys I started my day with a smile and filled with insight! You really spiced my coffee up lovely weirdos!
the floating heads style of poster is a contractual requirement by agents and actors in order to hire them onto a production rather than a conscious design choice
I'm curious what you would think of Polish versions of Diune books. Personally those are my favourite, they ideally match the story in my opinion. And of course, amazing art of Wojciech Siudmak, Polish famous artist who made covers of P. K. Dick's books too. I had so much fun watching this video, you surprised me with the topic! Do you plan more videos like that with Elliott? I would watch every of them!
The blue in the first newer poster is more of a reference to Caladan. The grading during the first bit of the film shows Caladan as a similar atmosphere if I remember correctly. It feels like it fits better for the first film. I don’t think it would fit Part 2 well though.
love that you look at how movie posters per country back then had a lot of their own cultures influence how the film was represented. Wish it was still like that nowadays.
I love everything you guys said , so interesting to hear what you guys have to say about this. One thing I’ll add for the very start, the Dune 2021 logo, as well as Dune: Part 2’s logo, you said have that ‘planet’ because it was a necessity so it doesn’t say ‘Dunc’. Which is true, the logo absolutely should have the correct spelling. But when you think about the fact that ‘planet’ is Arrakis, A.K.A Dune, then it actually fits even better. Especially when you know the story of the first Dune books, where the story is almost entirely centred around this one planet, being Dune. So as someone who is a diehard fan of Dune, movies and books, it fits perfectly. Literally perfectly.
I agree the Dune Pt.1 post feels cold, but I took it as they were going for a "progression through the series look" so this movie has more color elements from Paul's home world with all the water, and pt.2 would contrast that with being all orange and yellow ( I think that would be a great way for convenience so your not always reaching for the wrong one on the self or surfing through streaming services because they each have a distinct look) - great vid btw, great commentary
Mostly agree on all these takes. I had no idea the Dune design catalog was that deep and interesting. Some utterly fascinating design choices over the years.
I think the first poster is blue because they don;t start on arrakis they start on the Atredis home planet which is a water planet. Also the alternative poster being spacey in the moth of the worm is so smart because the worms how you travel space. Loved this video! Now i want a book cover inspired by the pain box.
I see lots of praise for this "collaboration." what I don't see is actual depth to your respective design knowledge. Superficial analysis at best. UA-cam has diluted the talent pool drastically, My salary (sans equity compensation - millions ) is 250k a year, but you both probably make more than I do. I can run circles around the both of you in writing, design, and traditional art. Easily. Any style, any theme. Any day, I weep for the future. 90% of youtube "content creators" wouldn't last a month as anything higher than a mid-level art director at any reputable studio.
Really enjoyed this, although I gotta disagree on the 50th anniversary cover. When I saw that edition at my local library, I knew Immediately I had to read it. And I did! And loved it!
the important thing is not design level, those designers reach out to work with those companies somehow and this is the success. "work smarter not harder"
i think the blue background is related to their transition from their home planet to arrakis, that i think is why theres no harkonnen nor other enemies in the poster

what did your post have? you made the dunc logo?
@@euclois I recreated the logo from an image of a WB presentation (I think) which was then taken down. You can see it at 1:07
