Just me personally but I would not keep rats in a bin cage just because they’re natural climbers and it doesn’t leave much climbing space. I’d also be scared of them chewing a hole in the bin haha, it’s a cute setup though!

There is plenty of climbing space as you can see in the video clips. ❤️ theres even a clip of me fitting inside the bin and i am far from small. 😉
Peaches is a standard rat and climbs on the items in the cage(as seen in the clips) and so do the dwarves.
Rats are fossorial by nature. This means they are ground dwelling. Not arboreal tree dwelling. They are a ground animal not a squirrel. Theres a big push towards cage setups that are quite tall and open with tons of branches to climb. But this is not specifies appropriate for our rats. They are not roof rats. They are domesticated brown rats.
In the wild the climbing they would do would be based on needs and not a choice if they can get food and hiding places elsewhere. And they wouldn’t be climbing up trees the same way squirrel does as they aren’t built for it. Logically they would be climbing small bushes to steal eggs from birds nests, and through brush piles.
Chewing is a valid fear for some. My rats are not destructive chewers and most breeders breed away from that. (Which is where mine all come from) There are precautions in place as well beyond even that though. The hardware cloth is on the inside to deter places around the windows being chewed. And i choose heavy duty bins with fairly smooth sides. Smoother sides mean less places to get teeth on to chew.
It’s not for everyone but is a perfectly fine cage with the right setup, and rats. :)

I think you mean i could get something bigger. And if i wanted to do that you are right i could.
But theres many reasons why this is totally fine and best for me and my rats. 🥰

@desisarod they get to play in a huge playpen fairly often. I have videos of that on my tiktok:
      www.tiktok.com/t/ZPR3eEGhE/
And that gets changed up often too 🥰
