Great stuff, and I always love seeing clips of Flynn’s Robin Hood. “It’s getting so you can’t put a hot iron in the eye of a tax dodge without catching a black arrow in the throat!”
I'm in my late 30's and I loved collecting Mego's in the early 2000's because of Toyfare magazine. It's charming to have so many franchises in a common line. I bought a bunch of the re-issues for my daughter as it's a toyline we can play with together.
I'm not a mego collector myself, but through other channels here on YT I've grown an appreciation for them. And these figures are just so nice! I cannot wait for that documentary. I wonder how Vader is gonna handle these merry men being around...lol
Having Will Scarlet being a bit more murderer looking is a great touch because he is the one that takes the vengeance kill on the sheriff after Robin is killed.
I was born in 72 and growing up in NYC I got to play and still own my childhood Mego's Star Trek figures and The USS Enterprise playset. I got them at Woolworth store in the mid and late 70s. I been collecting MEGO figures since 1975 with the first four Super Heroes with Superman and Batman and later Spiderman, the HULK and even Planet Of The Apes and my all time faves are Mego Star Trek figures and my USS Enterprise playset. Also at the Galaxycon I met Marty Abrams the inventor of the modern collector’s market The Mego brand, a modest dime store toy company founded in 1956 by David and Madeline Abrams, exploded in popularity when their son Marty became president of the Mego Corp. in 71.
Also as bad as the MEGO toys are build keep in mind back than when there was good figures with really great body made like G.I. Joe and Barbie some of us that grew up in the city with low income folks had to buy cheaper toys and to use Mego figures are to us 70s kids as toys from The Dollar Tree-Store/Walmart is the cheap like them Final Faction (btw I also like them Final Faction and collected all of them and even send some doubles to my friend in Canada)
Same. Sadly my Mego Batman and Robin did not survive the move, but at least my Superman did... until both he and his costume fell apart. I remember during the height for the Batman 89 movie, suddenly dreaming that I still had this mego Batman and being so disappointed that the figure I saw in my dream wasn't actually there anymore.
There are those explorer channels where people go into abandoned places and look around. One of them happened upon an abondoned comic book store with a full inventory of old comics and toys still sitting on shelves and displays. Its mind boggling to think there may be other places like that with a cache of vintage toys just sitting and whiling away the years waiting to be discovered. I used to see the Mego Trek figures in an old grocery store on shelves far to the back of the place. Rankles that it never occurred to be to pick them up.
Best use of The Adventures of Robin Hood clips since Warners did it for Bugs Bunny. Awesome Mego line about which I had no idea. I've enjoyed Robin Hood my entire life.
A. Our views align on Mego. I know I’m older and I have fond memories of them as they were my first superhero themed figs, but recognized the flaws even when I had them. Still have my childhood (naked somehow) hulk. B. Love your views on Robin Hood. Agree 100%. C. I never knew these “copies” (for lack of a better term) existed. D. You’ve given me a vintage-ish (lack of better term again) to snag just for fun. Thank you. Some challenge but from what you’ve said affordable once found. I’ve needed this.
I used to have just mego Robin Hood, and a handful of years ago came across these Figures Toy Company versions, so I was able to complete the four figure set, without having to chase down the other three expensive megos. And having the three Merry Men next to an original mego Robin, they look like they were all made by the same company.
Worf: Sir, I protest! I am NOT A MERRY MAN! Sorry! I just had to bring up the TNG episode where Q turns everyone into Robin Hood characters, just for funsies! MEGO was never one of my favorites either, but I always appreciated that they never seemed to turn down a license or an opportunity to do something creative with an opensource property. They made toys for shows and movies that would probably never have gotten them otherwise. Glad you got these figures for your collection, they are stunning!
I caught a really obscure film years ago on TV - Robin Hood, Arrows, Beans and Karate, from the 1970s. If you ever need to see Robin played by an Italian bodybuilder and have a Japanese karate monk as a Merry Man, you might like to check it out.
Hello Michael, I live in a small town in Northern California called Chico. It's where the on location footage for the Warner Brothers Adventures of Robin Hood was filmed and our park (that is I believe the 2nd biggest in the country right behind Central Park in NY) is still very wild and looks as it did when it was Sherwood Forest back in the 30's. If your documentary ever happens let me know I'll give you a tour.
No worries about not being able to get into Mego. I just take it as a reverse of how mid-80's onward figures draw no major interest from me. Nestalgic personal connection to toys is a big factor no matter how much a person can appreciate a line. I grew up asthe exact age Mego was aiming for and what a success they were for me. Having Marvel AND DC AND Star Trek in one line/scale, along with so many other shows and genres was mindblowing and awesome. I loved coming up with ways to create new figures from the existing ones, thanks to "simple" clothes swaps and customizing/tailoring. Scottie's shirt on Aquaman and Superman (or any other maskless head, but those 2 heads were everywhere at yardsales back then) gave you the much needed redshirt army builders. Simple orange paint and a pen gave you two more, a redhead and a mustachiod crewman (the pencil mustache always demanded to be a science officer in my noggin for some reason). Thor in a blue loincloth as Kamandi, and so on. But for whatever reason the Robin Hood line just wasnt sold in my heck of the woods unfortunately. We'd all have loved it since we still played Robin Hood almost as much as we did Lone Ranger and even more than we did Flash Gordon. Though the big regret was that our GI Joe's were too big to work with them (at least if I recall; something made the clothes incompatable). I'd love if this group actually expanded the line and gave some various knightly troop builders.
Awesome review. These figures look great. Love the classic film but Disney’s animated Robin Hood has always been my favorite with Prince of Thieves right behind it and Men in Tights is always a fun watch.
Never knew about this line, pretty cool! You mentioned The Shadow briefly, would you consider doing a video on the 1994 Shadow line by Kenner? That would be a pretty great set if it weren’t for the endless different versions of the titular character lol
This inspired me to finally watch the Errol Flynn film. It's been on my "watch list" forever, and it just keeps on not getting seen. It'll be a great movie for the holiday break! For what it's worth, Mego did some fun historical figures like Davy Crockett (one of my favorites) too!
Those look great. I have never been into Mego just because I never grew up with them. Though would not mind to have a Star Trek Spock Mego on my shelf.
As someone who primarily collects Mego figures I can vouch for the handful of original Mego figures I own having good poseability. A lot of reproductions, however, have posing issues, usually due to the rubber bands holding the limbs on being too tight, the clothes being too tight, or both. It depends on the manufacturer, of course, but generally the original Megos I own pose better then repros. Still, the repros are way cheaper, so I mostly own those.
I love these remade figures. Robin Hood is the ultimate class warrior. Amazing how many people know about Robin Hood but don’t understand what makes him great. This video made it clear as day, don’t think it could have been said better or more clear.
I felt the same about Mego, then I got the Mego style Snake Eyes and Storm Shadow last year at a huge discount. Turned into my favorite figures from last year.
The body mold that was used for the "Friar Tuck" figure? Is the the same mold that MEGO had used for (The Penguin, Mr. Mxyzptlk and Boss Hogg). MEGO had both designed and planned a "Sheriff of Nottingham" action figure for this line. But for whatever reason, it never got produced.
Hope you can get your Robin Hood documentary off the ground. I can definitely see potential in that being a multipart series covering the characters for these last 700 years.
Awesome video. Loved the Errol Flynn clips. Always good to see your Robin Hood Prince of Thieves collection. Do you think we will see / would you like to see a new release of Robin Hood figures in either 3.75 or 6inch with modern articulation ?
One night on the 'Insomanics Specials' channel on the CBC, I watched 'The Zany Adventures of Robin Hood', which I've always thought was one of the funniest and most realistic of all the Robin Hood movies. The problem is trying to find a DVD of it...!
I was 5 when Star Wars came out and like all kids at the time i loved it, but as much as i loved it and Indiana Jones and other things i was ALWAYS a Robin Hood and King Arthur kid. traditional medieval European set or style fantasy. which also made me go crazy for D&D in the early 80s. But "Robin Of Sherwood" is one of my absolute favorite things of all time period. I always had mixed feelings on MEGO dolls as well, i liked these and the Star Trek ones but never crazy about the superhero ones. and i LOVE the old MARX knights and Viking's etc... with all of the removable armor. but at the end of the day i ONLY collect 3 3/4" and 1:18, i can not stand stuff not being in scale with each other.
G'day Mates from Australia. Excellent video. My Grandfather was a Staunch Englishman from Nottingham. I grew up on the Erroll Flynn movie too. What a delightful video Retroblasting... Merry Christmas 🌲
I'm a Mego collector, and I guess you can say that I'm an expert. My collection consists of every Mego superhero excluding the secret identity figures, all 14 Star Trek figures, the entire Planet Of The Apes line, Starsky & Hutch, CHiPs, Dukes Of Hazzard, and of course the Merry Men. I own all four original. This is what I can tell you: in 2005 I was struggling to complete the Mego Knights and Pirates. I was really thrilled that Classic TV Toys had reissued the Knights and Pirates (I already owned the Merry Men, no need to buy them). I purchased the Knights I was looking for. Finally, all 5 Knights. Anyways, the Knights were of poor quality as were the Pirates. I broke a hand on one knight trying to put a sword in his hand. The heads are much thicker than the original Mego's. The plastic used on the body is cheaper. And yes, the elastic bands are cheaper. That's why yours are standing a little offset. I kept those Classic TV Toys versions, BUT...I knew I needed the original ones because standing them beside the originals they're just...off. So yes, your speculation about them being a reissue problem is true. However if you're okay with that, then great! After all you're not a Mego collector and I can totally appreciate how you wouldn't want to spend the money on the originals. So these repro figures are probably right up your alley. But the originals are a thing of beauty. Here's a hack for you though: you can always buy type 2 bodies and put the heads and clothes on them and they'll stand much better. Type 2 bodies used rubber bands. Now they make bandless bodies. So there are options.
i have all these figures toy company figures ,robin hood ,knights, pirates ,tex willer, western series, mad monsters etc ,also some original megos ,the FTC bodies at this point in 2004-7 were very poor quality ,it was nice that they remade these ,the orignals are far better .however for display their fine ,FTC would later make much better bodies for their later releases starting in 2013 .for a while back in 2007 or so you could get these FTC figures dirt cheap on ebay at about $5.00 each, now their prices have increased .good video thanx for sharing .
Great video. I am no Mego expert but the vintage ones from my youth hold poses. I don't think I have replaced the bands on any of them (or at least not in 30 years or more). I have Star Trek, DC and Marvel but they are pretty beat up. I know there are different types of Mego bodies. These guys would all be 70s vintage if that helps any expert date the body type. Thanks.
If I'm not mistaken the 2 body types are best observed by looking at the wrists. The first issue had metal "Rivets" connecting the wrists and ankles. The second issue had "Plastic Pins" to connect them. I say look at the wrists since most characters have boots, shoes, or leotards. Removing boots from a vintage figure can do a number of things. Breaking the ankle joint, or split the back seam of the plastic boot/shoe does little to satisfy ones curiosity! So the wrist check is the safest. Also I believe the back of the neck has the date stamped in. There were other very minor differences, but for the mot part, without removing the clothes, who's going to know?
Not going to get into the "which toys are better" rant, but I collected Mego's for a number of years and I agree, certain lines are better than others. I wasn't into the superheroes (which was Mego's most abundant line). But did think the Robin Hood, Pirates and especially the Knights, were just so bad-ass! Unfortunately like you stated, it is very hard and expensive to get all four in good condition. Try getting a complete set or Knights! The part about the accessories being a great addition is also the worse part of collecting, all those extra parts that kids lost. And I'll admit it, but not very proud of it, when the re-issues came out, I grabbed the Robin Hood (4), Cowboys and Indians (6), and of course the Knights (5). Anyway it's nice to hear a different topic of toy collecting. 👍
I LOVE Megos and also the Robin Hood collection. I had all except Friar Tuck.... BTW they pose fine, the type1 figures had legs that spread apart and that was kind of a problem but I can pose the type2s easily
Love this video simply for the fact you called out Robin Hood never coming with a sword and it makes no sense! For a while now I’ve been trying to find a long bow Robin from the Prince of Thieves line but I know that when I do so I’ll have to hunt down a toy sword that could work with him. I mean Adventures of Robin Hood and Prince of Thieves both end with Robin having a climactic sword fight with his main antagonist
Now you have my anticipating your eventual Robin Hood video/documentary. I’m curious to hear your thoughts on the eclectic range of motion pictures based on the character.
or Boss Hogg! Interesting tidbit, the Star Wars Gamorrean Guard is the same body as friar Tuck in the Kenner Robin Hood 4 inch line. So I wouldn't be surprised if all 3 were the same body since they are all Mego's?
Hey Michael I was curious to know if you picked up the Mezco Dick Tracy figures? Your retrospective of the Playmates toys really got me into the character(s) as a whole.
They all look great, though I still find the fact Friar Tuck in his sandals is a bit funny to me. Not sure why but when the others have boots that were a single color and then you have Tuck not getting the no shirt no shoes no service message. Still Blinckon approved...
i know my husband would love Robin hood men in tights figures! Imagine a bunch of South African Zulu and Dutch Afrikaan soldiers doing the Robin hood rap😂😂😂😂 my hus loves Mel Brooks
I got these when they first re issued them i transferred to mego bodies since the ctvt body is slightly off vs actual mego Type 2 bodies then they pose well. Overall they are really nice. Those 4 were it from mego and all the official ones from ctvt. When do we get Michael's robin hood errol flyn and skelator skit
Mego was great for its time, and definitely got the job done. I only ever had Batman and Robin, and they were a Birthday gift; I think my dad agreed with you about what constitutes 'Doll,' as he never had any real problem with Star Wars figures. These look incredible though. Does TV Classic cover any other franchises?
They had licenses for (deep breath) Robin Hood, Super Knights, Super Pirates, Happy Days, the rest of Space: 1999, and Married... With Children. As Figures Toy Company, they've been doing lighter weight body repros of the DC World's Greatest Superheroes, as well as The Monkees, Three Stooges, Johnny Quest, Birdman, Space Ghost, Blue Falcon, Galaxy Trio and The Superfriends. With MEGO's resurgence, however, it seems like, and maybe they're not, FTC/CTVT is bouncing the ball as the time runs down in the 4th quarter.
i had a few Megos, or at least a few knock-offs - i THINK they were astronauts but i'm certain none of them had the original outfits since they were found at a second-hand shop i remember having to replace the rubber band in one of them and failing at using my crochet hook, then using a plastic yarn needle - i snipped the eye open and used it to push the new band into place - i stabbed myself at least twice
I had the Spider Man, Robin and the Super Man. What would have made these figures better would have been to have a 2nd head. So you could have Peter Parkers, Dick Grayson and Clark Kent. But then they would need to have their plain clothing as well. But after I had those figures, I never bought them again.
@ - I love your channel. I really do. I’m not sure why you perceived my comment as anything more than a fun comment. It wasn’t a criticism or an attack and certainly didn’t require you to admonish it with a remark about how successful the video is. I’m glad it’s getting lots of views. I really am. I have no ill will towards you. Sorry you don’t see that. Anywho. Happy Holidays I guess. Sorry I bothered you.
Classic TV Toys bodies were made in India and they were very poorly made with too much recycled plastic so they break frequently in the hands. The rubber bands were also odd which kept them from posing properly.
Yes, new video! :D Also, unrelated, but I just found out UA-cam is testing giving creator's the ability to leave voice audio recordings as comments and my first thought was 'RetroBlasting's voice replies to trolls would be legendary'. xD
Hmm. Sorry there were frustrations with the completion of the line. CTVT had the components for the figures for a while and were easy enough kitbashes. Yeah, the bodies are a bit on the hard to pose side, moreso than the OG and newer MEGOs, lighter, too, and worryingly so.

Mr Retroblasting- you need to come to Yorkshire- the *real* haunt of the *real* Robin Hood. And his supposed grave too!
Was there in 2019
i have all these figures toy company figures ,robin hood ,knights, pirates ,tex willer, western series, mad monsters etc ,also some original megos ,the FTC bodies
at this point in 2004-7 were very poor quality ,it was nice that they remade these ,the orignals are far better .however for display their fine ,FTC would later
make much better bodies for their later releases starting in 2013 .for a while back in 2007 or so you could get these FTC figures dirt cheap on ebay at about $5.00 each, now
their prices have increased .good video thanx for sharing .
So the one with Hood in his name doesn't have a HOOD?!!!
This is a merry Mego video, I just wish the Sheriff and his cohorts have their own Mego versions so we can have both sides to play and display with
Friar Tuck looks like Dungon Master from D&D cartoons
Not a huge fan of Robin Hood, but i like Mego figures, they take me back to my childhood, these look pretty good , thanks Michael.
As a Batman fan, your disinterest in Robin Hood is downright tragic.
@@retroblasting you're right it is, I see Amazon Prime has a bunch of Robin Hood movies, I'm going to give them a shot.
I protest sir, I’m a not a merry man.
Why was there not a Maid Marian figure? Little John was supposedly seven feet tall, but you knew that.
Actually, it's a buck-and-a-quarter quarter staff, but I'm not telling HIM that. ;)
Now I want to make an squad of modern era Robin Hood inspired soldiers. You could sub the Lincoln green for fatigues and so on.
Great video! I might be wrong but I think Will Scarlet’s head is a reuse of the Dr McCoy from the Star Trek line. A decent reuse.
Close! It's the Astronaut from Planet of the Apes. Right genre, though.
Sure as Hell looks like a pissed-off Bones.
Kirk: Hey Dr. McCoy, could you hand me my boots?
Bones: DAMMIT Jim I'm a Doctor, not a cobbler!!!
@@TheGryxterThe hair is longer here and the McCoy figure doesn't have the '70s sideboards either.
Mego hulk was my favorite
I wonder if Friar Tuck was built on a Penguin body.
or Boss Hogg! Interesting tidbit, the Star Wars Gamorrean Guard is the same body as friar Tuck in the Kenner Robin Hood 4 inch line. So I wouldn't be surprised if all 3 were the same body since they are all Mego's?
@@TheGryxter I love the Prince Of Thieves line
I had Superman, Batman, Spiderman and Bo Duke as a child. Sadly I know longer have these. I did buy Captain Kirk around 20 years ago.
Will Scarlet looks like John Cena Peacemaker LOL
Hey Michael I was curious to know if you picked up the Mezco Dick Tracy figures? Your retrospective of the Playmates toys really got me into the character(s) as a whole.
I haven't, but it looks nice.
Sir Robin Hood and his Murder Men! lol
I got these when they first re issued them i transferred to mego bodies since the ctvt body is slightly off vs actual mego
Type 2 bodies then they pose well. Overall they are really nice. Those 4 were it from mego and all the official ones from ctvt. When do we get Michael's robin hood errol flyn and skelator skit
1000% Yes
I thought I was alone
Will Scarlett got more accessories because he is less popular than Robin Hood.
The Robin Clan of merry (-erry / +urderous) men ain’t nuthing ta f’ wit
Wheres Rocket Robin Hood? 1:47
NOT on DVD. Think about it. Not everything makes it to physical media. Do YOU have Rocket Robin Hood on DVD or Blu Ray? THINK about it.
The super knights black knight makes a great sheriff of Nottingham
i had a few Megos, or at least a few knock-offs - i THINK they were astronauts but i'm certain none of them had the original outfits since they were found at a second-hand shop
i remember having to replace the rubber band in one of them and failing at using my crochet hook, then using a plastic yarn needle - i snipped the eye open and used it to push the new band into place - i stabbed myself at least twice
Merry Men kind of rhymes with Men of Mayhem ❤
I had the Spider Man, Robin and the Super Man. What would have made these figures better would have been to have a 2nd head. So you could have Peter Parkers, Dick Grayson and Clark Kent. But then they would need to have their plain clothing as well. But after I had those figures, I never bought them again.
I’m with you on the Mego. Not my jam. Over 3.75” kinda puts me off in general. 😂
I beg your pardon, I am not a merryman!
This comment brings honor.
I prefer my Robin Hood figures to have buck and a quarter quarterstaffs.
................
Need a Mr. Worf clip “I am not a Merry Man”!
I love it when people try to give me creative suggestions on videos that are already finished on a channel with over 100K subs.
I love Flynn.
👍👌
Classic TV Toys bodies were made in India and they were very poorly made with too much recycled plastic so they break frequently in the hands. The rubber bands were also odd which kept them from posing properly.
Did you like any of the modern Robin Hood movies
Wait.....
Did you plan for this video to coincide with the healthcare ceo shooting? lol
No.
That's a bit dark
Yes, new video! :D Also, unrelated, but I just found out UA-cam is testing giving creator's the ability to leave voice audio recordings as comments and my first thought was 'RetroBlasting's voice replies to trolls would be legendary'. xD
well bv best be careful now hunting for his arms
Hmm. Sorry there were frustrations with the completion of the line. CTVT had the components for the figures for a while and were easy enough kitbashes.
Yeah, the bodies are a bit on the hard to pose side, moreso than the OG and newer MEGOs, lighter, too, and worryingly so.
No worries whatsoever. Really glad to have them.
@@retroblastingMind the arms. They jump off at unfortunate times.
What line is that castle facade the Prince of Thieves figs are hanging around from?
You should really subscribe - ua-cam.com/video/Kpbmnv0WBPA/v-deo.html&pp=ygUQcmV0cm9ibGFzdGluZyB1aw%3D%3D
It's a bit odd that they didn't make any bad guys for the heroes to fight. The Sheriff and a soldier goon would have sufficed.
