  • The Dwarves of Khazad-dûm
Balin's gaze is fixed on a singular goal-the reclamation of Khazad-dûm, one of the most ancient and revered dwarven realms. The halls of our forefathers must once again ring with the sound of hammers and the songs of Durin's sons. The path ahead is fraught with peril, and enemies lurk in every shadow, but the indomitable will of the dwarves knows no equal. Through courage, determination, and sheer force of will, victory shall be ours, and Khazad-dûm will be restored to its rightful glory.

48 years after the Battle of the Five Armies, Balin, along with Flói, Óin, Ori, Frár, Lóni, Náli, and a large colony of Dwarves embarked from the Lonely Mountain to the Misty Mountains to reclaim the lost dwarven city of Moria. Dáin II Ironfoot reluctantly gave his permission for the venture, fearing Durin's Bane, which he had seen with his own eyes at the Battle of Azanulbizar. Balin hoped to reclaim some of the treasure of the lost realm such as the Ring of Thrór (actually taken from Thráin II by Sauron). The initial battles took place from the Dimrill Dale to the Chamber of Mazarbul in which Flói was killed before the Dwarves reached the First Hall. Nevertheless everything went well as the Dwarves were fiercely determined to take back their home, slaying every orc in their path, eventually some of Moria was reclaimed and they dwelt in the Twenty-first Hall of North end until Balin moved to the Chamber of Mazarbul, which then became his seat of rule. For the next five years, Balin ruled as Lord of Moria. The orcs became a mere nuisance in those years and were not a serious threat. During this time, Balin and company found Durin's Axe and some sort of 'helm', possibly the crown of Durin I. The Dwarves sent word of their success to Erebor, speaking of their prosperity and new colony within Moria, but after sometime went quiet, leaving King Dáin and the rest in the dark about the expeditions eventual fate.

One thing to let you know just incase you didnt notice, because i didnt until just today, but the militia garrison building line no longer provides a garrison of defenders. it now provides Law bonus and Free Garrison slots. personally i dont like this change because some settlements just really depend on having that extra force too defend a highly contested area (especially on Shattered Alliances).

It's more or less the same in the end.
Whether you have 2 free units stationed there or have a building that gives you 2 garrison troops when attacked... One is more flexible, the other more safe.

If you have enough finances you could send an expedition to Buzra-dum and start beleriand honour guard recruitment process, maybe even start a long distance war(get military access with dunedain and bree and send armies that way) with ered luin and reclaim and reeducate those foolish dwarves before they further blemish the good name of others clans.

Hello, my friend. Finally, it is high time to make our victory known to all of the world! Good job with making the Dwarfs of Ered Luin stop their war with the High Elfs, I suppose that it was them who killed Elrond... So, let's hope that Ered Luin will attack Angmar now, so as to relieve the press over the Dunedain. Bree has done very well, albeit the Angmarim outclass them and Angmar is already too big. Which means that you have a mission, to terminate the Goblins as soon as possible. Thus, the west bank of the Anduin in yours to take, before you assault in Goblin Town and terminate the Goblins for good. Always have a watch of the last-stand armies, which make all the circle to the North via the Gap of Rohan. Your economy is in a very good shape, which will grow soon enough, as you build up your infrastructure. I suggest you to build the Hall of the Seven simultaneously in KD and KD West, in order to have two places to recruit some very good units. The Khazad-dum Reclaimers are retrained only in KD or KD West, as they are AOR, considering that you have the relevant tier of Barracks. Finally, don't attack Gundabad yet, as you don't want to have two enemies at the same time - and they are entangled in the war with the Vale and Erebor, which can strain them significantly. Wait for the right moment, until you strike.
And now, let's get a good episode for our story:
As the diplomat from Khazad-dum reached the Halls of Thorin, the Clanlord himself came out at his doors to greet an old fella. Behind him, Grindfarn got anxious and his position was hostile, however the Clanlord was very happy. After an exchange of words, the Clanlord cheered in a high voice: "The Balrog is dead! Hurray the victorious Dwarfs!", and everyone followed his example. Though some noted that Grindfarn stayed very silent and some around him - but they were not many.
But the reality in the feast was a bit different. Grindfarn and his kin were not there, but an emissary from Rivendel. Lord Elrond had fallen in the battle and some of the Elfs were not very happy, however the emissary stated that the Elfs wanted only peace and not war. Clanlord looked at the Dwarf emissary and said he was willing for an alliance, as the Dwarfs never wanted wars except for the servants of the Enemy. So, a ceasefire was granted and then the alliance between Khazad-dum and Ered Luin was signed.
The news came back quite quickly. A Dwarf named Gurin seeked a smith place to work, stating that he was from Ered Luin and he wanted to work in the very old realm of his kin. Broin was not against it, as he was very happy to work with a fellow from the Blue Mountains, especially when everyone understood that his craftmanship was extraordinary due to his teaching from the Orocarni, especially the Blacklocks. Broin decided to pay him a visit with a precious gift, a small statue of Durin, and the other Dwarf was very happy. After exchaniging some words about the situation, the question came: "ow is the situation in Ered Luin?", Broin asked. "As we heard that you decided to accept the gift from Sauron. And our emissary saw the Rings in the hands of the Clanlord".
Gurin decided not to answer for a while. But after some silence, he spoke with a low voice. "It's not good at all", he said. "Grindfarn and his own tried to take over and make us close all doors to the others. They say that a lot of our artifacts are in the world, stolen from us, and in our shoulders falls the duty to retrieve them. How can we say a No to the riches of Beleriad, to seek other treasures that value so much less from the Old Days?".
"I've never heard something of it", Broin answered, with a bit of fear not to offend his comrade. "Neither my cousin, who is a smith, like you, has heard anything of it. Except you know something that we don't".
"Believe me, there's nothing", Gurin said, after showing that he read Broin's mind. "And you never offended me, don't have fear for this".
    Broin breathed with more ease.
"But believe me, my friend", Gurin continued. "I'm not a smith, like your cousin, I don't play with metal, but with wood and metal and I make machines, not weapons. Though I can easily understand them. We are conservative people, my friend, and we believe that if we make something, then it belongs to us and only us. We are not willing to give them away and we rarely make gifts. And the important is that we consider them as loans only. If we give a gift to someone else, we loaned it to him and after his death, the gift must be returned to us".
"I've only heard of it", Broin said. "We also have some like this, but they are a very small minority - only two or three people here, of old age. And you can add some two or three in Erebor or the Iron Hills. The vast majority of our smiths and technicians of any kind, my cousin included, do not believe in this, which they consider a minor prolepsis, not even worthy of discussion".
"I am of the same opinion", Gurin said. "But they folk in Ered Luin believe these nonsenses with passion. They claim that the gifts we have given of old are nominally ours, given that they are Dwarven craft, thus they were donated to the others and they must be returned. Grindfarn and his supporters gaineed much power inside the Halls utilising this as they wish to".
"I understand now, my friend", Broin said. "However, those are relatively minor situations, I can say".
"The Horn of Scatha?", Gurin countered with clamness. "We heard it's now in Rohan. Narsil, the sword of Elendil? We heard it's with the Dunedain. What of Durthang, the sword of Turin Turambar? We heard it's still lying into his tomb in Tol Morwen. The Vaults of Buzra-dum? They are not under our control, and we hear that there is a Balrog there as well. Are those minor situations?".
Broin didn't speak, but his expression was easily readable.
"Exactly, my friend", Gurin read his mind again. "Despite that I don't have this belief, that those artifacts are ours and since the original keepers of them, they must be returned to us, even by force. You can understand what sort of implications there will be with our allies. But Grindfarn has given so much attention to this, that has won many in Ered Luin".
"I understand", Broin said. "As I learn this, I must inform Lord Balin and Lord Oin. Will you excuse me?".
"Write a letter, so that I can sign it", Gurin said. "They must surely know of it".
Balin and Oin read very carefully the letter from Broin and Gurin. They looked upon each other and then to Borin, who was wirking at a corner. Borin didn't show a sign that he had noticed, however they understood that he had taken notice. They called him to comment.
"I understand what my cousin wrote here", he said after a while. "As Gurin, I also believe that this is a nonsense. However, we must take care of this and avoid any possible discussion about those artifacts. What happened with the sword of Turin is unknown, but even possible rumours of it could be the cause of the war between Ered Luin and the Elfs. Thankfully, we stopped that war, however we should be careful when tangling with these subjects".
"We'll avoid as much as possible", Balin said. "Or we should find a way to go around those arguments".
Oin and Borin nodded in agreement.

Question regarding agents: so spies increase your culture when they are placed inside a settlement? I haven't been able to find clear info on the effects of agents in DAC (e.g., increasing culture, reducing corruption), so I'd appreciate any information folks might have on that sort of thing.

@@RahpaSmurf That's fascinating, thanks! Definitely makes planning a campaign easier; building up culture buildings from scratch in a 0% culture region is a drag.
