      @@MarkHogan994 did the debates make headlines? I don't think so, that's the point he's making. The point he's making is that we're looking at digital lines on a screen to determine what body part is beyond the last defender, the rules for handball have changed and are now delegated to VAR if in the penalty box, then the ref has to go to the screen to check if the VAR decision is valid THIS is what he meant. We now have something to blame as VAR is a 3rd party with the ability to replay moments in a game and give their subjective opinion, the human element has been taken out as the referee and officials gave the first and last call, if he didn't see the handball, not given, if the linesman didn't see the offside not given, that's the beauty behind sport, PEOPLE not technology

    Issue is that VAR was meant to come in and solve the poor referee calls. Instead it's magnifying poor calls and slowing down the game to a disgusting pace.

    The point of var was to eliminate all "clear and obvious" errors. They are not doing that if they have to draw a line across the pitch to see if someone was offside, that is not clear and obvious. I think that the referee on the pitch should look at var, not someone in a box at times about 130 miles away.

  • @davidkrone856
    @davidkrone856 10 годин тому +8

    We debate these things because the media want something to talk about.
    Media creates controversy, controversy creates viewership, and this brings more scrutiny (from people that never actually played the game) which pressurises the game to change.
    We are trying to bring certainty to decisions which will always have an element of subjectivity. Only now there is no excuse to get things 'wrong'.
    Gone are the days of respect for ref's discretion. Fundamental lessons which sport used to teach us are being lost - Learning to respect one another. Learning to deal with decisions that don't go your way. Learning to control the controllables and let go of the rest. Accepting refs (like all players and mere mortals) are imperfect and will make mistakes. This is what it means to be human.
    The issue at hand is the commercialisation of sport and a loss of values. We are killing what makes the game beautiful.

    • @davidkrone856
      @davidkrone856 9 годин тому +1

      Some pragmatic ideas for the road we find ourselves on could be:
      - Bring more transparency to the governance and performance management of referees'. Reassure the public that refs are being held accountable. Allow players to review and rate the performance of refs. How well did they communicate? Were they consistent? etc.
      - Remove subjectivity where possible. If the ball touches your hand, it is a hand ball (this might create more goals, great). If you are offside, VAR will alert refs. If the ball goes out of play alert the ref.
      - Remove VAR from subjective decisions which are open to interpretation. Leave to refs discretion.
      - Give the captain 2 or 3 chances to have the Ref review a decision in partnership with VAR.
      - Consider Mic'ing up Refs so that the public can understand the thinking process of the Ref and greater understand the perceptions and interpretations of the ref.

    Ange is correct. That nonsense last night did nothing g for the game. It’s just americanising it for tv. Al you need is the screen to display what’s happening and then tell you the result. The problem is the ref will hold up the game whilst they check something and then start the game and the fans don’t know what’s happening. Then maybe they’ll flash up checking penalty and instantly say no penalty when the games already started.
