- You probably spend more time looking at your dash than your paint. So fix that cracked top and peeling vinyl on your Porsche 914! It's easy to DIY and you can restore your dash in a weekend. This is from my bumblebee and I'm getting it ready while the car is in the paint shop. New upper dash foam and vinyl, new dash face basketweave and metal backing, and a new dash top. Thanks to 914 Rubber for making great parts and helping with this build!

Great video Ian, The BMW e9 ,e12, e28, 24, 2002 guys would kill for such an easy fix to the cracked dash issue. Nice work
Thanks Dave!
BumbleBee is going to be amazing! Nice work on the dash restoration.
Hope so!
Great job demonstrating each step brother!!
Thanks! Much appreciated.
Good video Ian
Thanks 👍
Nailed it! Nice work as always Ian.
Thanks guys!
Nice work!
Thanks!
Great job looks really good. Attention to detail will really show in the car!
Thanks! Hoping to make the car like new, but not over restored. Fine line to walk...
Nice work with all details and part supplier
Thanks Lee!
Looks great.
Thanks!
Yes spray can adhesives melt in the heat. I found out the hard way. Headliner in my 64 Mercury just did not want to stay up.
Great video
Thanks! Yeah, I found that out the hard way as well...
Only no happy mistakes on this one
There are always happy accidents ;)
Awesome video! Happy 4th of July!
Thanks! You too!
Dang, I done 3D scanned my dash and was about to 3D print a new one, this would save time.
Probably :)
Great video! I'm in the market for a 914. I know one of interest and know it will need a new dash. I'm very mechanical inclined but like too see what might be ahead of me before I consider a purchase. This is definitely doable.
Yep. Go for it!
Does the DAP adhesive work on the exterior vinyl for the B post?
Yep. It’s like a mini landau top :)
Hey Ian, love your series(including the corny humour :)) . I bought a 74 914 2.0 liter. It came completely disassembled but unfortunately no nuts and bolts. How would I ever figure out what is needed to attach all the bits? Help!
Hey Red! Sorry for the delay...I moved my house and shop this week. Auto Atlanta and 914 Rubber sell kits with all the interior nuts and bolts. For the rest of the car, check the exploded parts views or shop manuals and the bolt sizes will be listed. You can also get a bunch of M8 and M6 in various lengths. Those are the most common sizes. You could also post questions on 914world.com. Please subscribe if you haven't already. Lots more great stuff coming. Thanks!
is there a reason you didnt use the 13mm plastic nuts & washers that were used OE when securing the top? Looks good.
Thanks man! The kit came with metal nuts and no washers. Figured the nylon studs provided enough resistance to keep the nuts from backing out.
Hey Ian, good video. Im about to do this. But I feel that the fabric side(blk side) of the foam should be on top so "knuckle prints" cant be pressed in .It would keep the vinyl permanently flat/smooth at the surface??. I dont know, seems it would more permanently firm and "stable" at the seen side?? and the foam side would help "fill in" the awful spot weld distortion on these? Please let me know if I am totally wrong here, they are closed for the weekend and I forgot to call them for any "tip sheet" TY! seems like a lot of thought was in putting that black layer on it when it could have just been a plain foam layer???What is it really for????Is it really for adhesion????also it looks a bit to "puffy". My 914rubber kit looks exactly like yours.
...im starting to wonder if that foam is actually a thin headliner material and the black side is the finish side. ...so now what lol!
Good question. I put the black side down because the OEM stuff was just foam (no fabric side) and the vinyl laid on top of that. You're right that it's a bit more puffy than stock (and the vinyl is a bit more matte), but I dig the look.
@@IanKarr Thanks Ian , I got it done today, 3 hours of rethinking and maybe 1 hour actual work lol. I think I did figure out possibly the best way to go about it which turns out is also prob the fastest way. Doing the face now then the $$$$ dash top lol! Some VALUABLE info: If 914rbr's black friday sale is like last year, DONT MISS IT! WOW! (my top was $99 last year, and other incredible deals if u watch and wait, had so much fun waiting for the next BIG item to pop up! That is a really great company, but you already know that! Thanks for the videos!
@@gtbarnes11 which way did you glue the foam? Post pic!
Which video do you show how to remove the dash? I can’t seem to find it :)
I believe it's Episode 2 - ua-cam.com/video/t6B3gKW9nPA/v-deo.html&ab_channel=IanKarr
Ian can you get the dash back in all together like that?
Yep. Thats how it went back in. Then just added the knee pad
Did you make the templates? I don't remember templates for the weave
I bought the material and traced out the shape
Does the glass need to be off for the whole dash to come off?
Could you include the removal of the dash next time ?? 😅
You can take the dash out with the glass in...though it's easier with it out. You can see the removal of the dash in episode 2... here's a link. It starts at about 1:30. Enjoy!
